What is water scarcity?

Water scarcity means that the demand for water is higher than the actual resource. Theres 2 types: Physical and economical water scarcity. Physical water scarcity means theres not enough water for everybody. Economic water scarcity means there is a lack of investment in water.

Facts about water scarcity

1: 97% of water is salty, 2% is frozen, and only 1% is fresh accesible water. 2: Humans can go 3 days without water. 3: Every 20 seconds a child dies because of a water related sickness. 4: 1 out of 8 people on earth need to search for clean water every day. 5: of the worlds population lives in countries with not enough water.

Facts about water scarcity

6: By 2013 water scarcity demand will increase 40%. 7: By 2030 half of global population will face water scarcity. 8: Human body is 60% water. 9: Back in 2000, world leaders adopted millenium development goals (MSG). 10: Water scarcity occurs when the demand is higher than the resource.

Global Water Scarcity

PHYSICAL WATER SCARCITY: Northern Mexico, South-West US, Northern Africa, South Australia, Middle East and north Asia. ECONOMICAL WATER SCARCITY: South Asia, Central Africa and Central America.

Oceania
Only South-East Australia has water scarcity. The problem is mainly caused because the Murray River, one of Australia's water sources, turned salty.

What has already been done?

The Australian government created a dam to stop salt water from getting into its river.

Ideas to solve the problem

Use cold water from the shower and use it to use the toilet, to wash clothes, and to water plants.

Use treated water for agriculture and purify water from the rain.

Water conservation at home

This pie graph represents the average water usage in home. As you can see showers, baths and toilet usage use a lot of water compared with other activities.

Since showers and baths use 35% of an average home water usage we think its important to try and use less water.

Since an average shower uses less water than a bath, we propose to start campaigns to promote showers instead of baths. This will help a lot because in one week you can save 126 water liters. In one year you can save 7,056 water liters.
If more people took showers instead of baths we would save a lot of water.

Install water-saving water heads.

Water-saving water heads use 50% to 70% less water and require less energy to heat up water. There are many different styles and features available and you can buy one for around 8 dollars.

Check your house for water leaks.

Water leaks can waste a lot of water. If you search for leaks at home less water will be wasted. This will be very good because it will help you save water and spend less money on water each month.
