KRYSTAL TOMASSO/The Sun
This year, Winterfestival was designed to keep the children patiently awaiting Santas arrival. The dcor on the path to Santas seat
was accented by snow and North Pole characters in vibrant holiday colors. The children could not keep their hands off the teddies and
garland, and squealed with delight as the dcor unraveled. Despite the innocent mischief, the setup was successful and the children
were in good spirits in the long winding line.
Residents turn out for Winterfestival Industrial
zoned land
changed to
residential
By KRYSTAL TOMASSO
The Sun
Industrial zoned land in Marl-
ton is dwindling down to its last
patch. The last township-owned
industrial zone will change its
zone to residential this month. By
next year, an auction will be held
and developers can bid on the
property. The only plot of land
left as an industrial zone is pri-
vately owned.
According to Nancy Jamanow,
director of community develop-
ment, the zoning change has been
discussed within town council
and with residents for approxi-
mately nine months. Residents
from surrounding the area came
to the council and asked for the
land to be considered for a modifi-
cation to a residential zone.
We met with representatives
from the surrounding residential
communities, Village Green,
Legacy Oaks and Sharp Run.
They prefer residential and the
builders proposed residential,
Jamanow said.
This new zoning change allows

Zoned property approved
for single-family homes
Road to have single-family homes
and confirms the variance of two
properties on the same street.
One lot is owned by the township
and property is owned by Scar-
borough which is approved for 21
single-family homes.
This is a prime location for
builders, and people want to live
in a good community where there
are good schools, Jamanow said.
The lot, which is on Sharp
Road, neighbors Boyles Brothers
Inc. a trucking company. Owner,
John Boyle addressed the council
several times over the past year to
find a compromise so the future
residents wont have too many
complaints.
If I could ensure anybody that
there would be no complaints I
would do that, Jamanow said.
At this time, the newly zoned
property is approved for single-
family homes, but the property
has not been subdivided yet.
Jamanow said there could be a
point of sale disclosure that
would inform the new residents
of the pre-existing neighboring
industrial zone in use and the po-
tential for business to run for 24/7
hours and 365 days. The ordi-
nance can also change the buffer
and landscape zones to keep com-
fortable boundaries between the
residents and industrial business-
es.

Cherokee football takes
Group V championship title
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
Like Babe Ruth before him,
Cherokee High School head foot-
ball coach PJ Mehigan called his
shot.
We look to compete for a con-
ference championship and look to
secure a spot in the playoffs to
compete for a group champi-
onship. We have big expectations
every season, Mehigan said be-
fore the season. Weve had a
great offseason and were return-
ing a lot of our starters and team
leaders that have been in some
battles the last couple of seasons.
Theyve had some disappoint-
ments to learn from, and well see
how that experience translates.
Turns out it translated into a
NJSIAA South Jersey Group V
championship as the Chiefs dis-
mantled the Vikings of Eastern
High School, 38-2, on Dec. 6 at
Rowan University. The title was
Cherokees ninth, the first since
winning consecutive champi-
onships in 2009 and 2010. It was
the second time the Chiefs and
Vikings met this season with
Cherokee winning the first
matchup, 28-21, on Oct. 25. The
second matchup proved to be a
more one-sided affair.
We started off slow the first
time we played them and they
came roaring back, Mehigan
said. I did think we would be in
for a battle all night, but I am
happy we werent.
Paced by 17 first quarter points,
the Chiefs held a 24-0 lead at half-
time. It was more than enough as
the only points Eastern could
muster were on a blocked punt in
the third quarter. As the brackets
No. 2 seed, Cherokee looked domi-
nant with wins over Washington
Township High School and Jack-
son High School, 51-0 and 35-14, re-
spectively.
Mehigan said the team relied
on its depth on the offensive and
defensive line, as well as quarter-
back Trevor Osler. For Osler,
there was no better way for the
season to end.
This absolutely was the best
way to end my career at Cherokee
and for all of us seniors to end
our careers here, Osler said.
This is an incredible feeling.

A
s the holiday season begins to
wind to a close, we want to
take this opportunity to thank
everyone who stepped up to help those
in need. This time of year usually
brings out the best in people. Judging
from the number of announcements
we received from our readers regard-
ing donation drives, it looks like this
year was no exception.
Last year, Hurricane Sandy created
an immediate need in many communi-
ties. This year, some of those commu-
nities were still in need of help. Food
banks were running low after sending
supplies to those communities hit hard
by the storm.
The same with those who help with
clothing, and even toys.
Over the past few weeks, we have
had the pleasure of publishing stories
about efforts to lend a hand. Like al-
ways, there were the usual Toys for Tot
drives and more. We dont keep a for-
mal count of the number of holiday
fundraising event stories we publish
from year to year, but it certainly
seemed that, in 2013, there were many.
So, we thank those individuals and
groups who organized these efforts.
And, on behalf of them, we also thank
everyone who picked up an extra can
of non-perishable food, an additional
bag of dog food, one more toy and
more. To all of those who reached a lit-
tle deeper into their wallets this year to
help out, your generosity truly made a
difference.
We wish everyone a happy holiday
season and hope for a wonderful 2013.
Happy holidays!
A thank you to everyone who helped to brighten the season for those in need
Stepping up
Thank you to everyone who lent a helping
hand to those in need this holiday season.
But giving shouldnt stop just because the
holidays arent over. Tell us about your
donation drive throughout the year,
and well share it with the rest of the
community.
Basket-making exhibit now on display
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
To Marlton resident Hope Fuhs, her
handmade baskets are so much more than
just baskets. They have become a labor of
love she has shared with friends and family
for decades.
Now, her work is available for all to see at
the Medford Arts Center.
Baskets of Hope is a special exhibit at
the arts center that features the work of
Fuhs, a retired math teacher who took up
basket-making almost 30 years ago and has
never looked back.
Fuhs began to make baskets in the mid-
1980s after trying various forms of sewing
and stitching.
I saw a kit one day in one of the craft
stores and did it, she said.
Fuhs took to making the baskets more
than any other art form she tried.
I could get some aggressions out for the
day, she said with a laugh.
Wanting to become more involved in her
new hobby, she attended a Basketmakers
Association convention in Indiana to learn
more.
I paid my dues to the convention, I
think it was $15 for the year, Fuhs said. I
figured it was 30 old ladies in someones
garage, and it turned out it was for 1,000
people.
Not only does Fuhs still attend conven-
tions each year to take new classes, but she
even teaches her own classes now. She and
her husband began traveling to Florida
about 10 years ago after they both retired.
When she saw the snowbird community
where they stayed had different instruc-
tional classes, she decided to teach her bas-
kets to others.
For her first class, she was shocked to
find 21 people show up.
It was something new, Fuhs said.
They just wanted to see.
Fuhs classes arent quite as large now,
but she still teaches classes of about six to
eight people today. She makes baskets at
home and will bring them to Florida to
teach it to her students.
The baskets have become a part of Fuhs
life. She made the baskets in between her
job as a math teacher at Shawnee High
School and Sequoia Alternative High
School while she was still teaching. She
said family and friends loved her work and
she would constantly make them for spe-
cial events such as someone having a baby,
birthdays and holidays.
Fuhs estimates that shes made more
than 120 baskets since taking up the hobby.
She said she makes about 15 per year.
Sometimes, Im thinking of new things
and Im thinking of what I did and what I
could have done, Fuhs said. I find myself
making them for other people.
The Medford Arts Center turned its at-
tention toward Fuhs after her two daugh-
ters submitted some of her work to Exhibi-
tions Coordinator Tracey Femiano.
They came into my house and took
some of my baskets, Fuhs said. (Femi-
ano)s the one who said yes and she picked
the Dickens Festival.
With visitors coming in and out of the
Medford Arts Center during the Dickens
Festival on Dec. 7, Baskets for Hope was
viewed by many and received a lot of posi-
tive responses from the public.
Baskets for Hope runs at the Medford
Arts Center through Jan. 19. The center is
open to the public Friday through Sunday,
and the exhibit is free to visit.

County seeks items for toy collection
Burlington County sheriff
Jean Stanfield announced that
her departments annual Toy
Drive is officially underway,
and that residents and businesses
can donate toys for children of
families in need numerous drop-
offs located throughout the Coun-
ty.
Stanfield said that the collec-
tion would continue until Dec. 20,
when Sheriff s Officers will gath-
er up the bins, and return them to
the County Complex. Toys will
then be safety checked by the
Burlington County Department
of Consumer Affairs. Human
service agencies will work with
the sheriff to distribute the toys.
Every year, our residents
provide a wonderful response to
the toy drive, Stanfield
said. The holiday season brings
out the best in people of
our County, and it enables us all
to put a smile on the face of a
child who might otherwise go
without.
Last year, the department col-
lected approximately 1,100 toys;
the sheriff said she is optimistic
that the drive will exceed that
number this holiday season.
Drop-off locations include mu-
nicipal buildings and police de-
partments, County government
buildings, and private businesses.
A complete list of drop-offs fol-
lows and will also be available on
the Sheriff s Department Web-
site: www.co.burlington.nj.us/
sheriff.
