As the ultimate destination festival, BPM would be the perfect candidate for a Cultivora travel guide. There was only one problem: Laura and I had never been to Playa del Carmen before. How could we possibly produce a travel guide for a festival weve never attended? First, we needed in-house experts, and with the help of our brilliant photographer Oliver Correa, we recruited Angela del Sol and Dianna Loevner. From the transportation insights to our Tulum Mini Guide and everything in between, these two lovely ladies provided us with a wealth of information, sourced from their own BPM experiences and a few wellplaced friends living in Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Youll notice that none of the articles have individual bylines, as this guide was truly the result of our combined efforts. The collaborations dont stop there Wellington Adames and elektro Magazine stepped up to curate our Playlist (page 12), and Amanda Ho of Plexi PR helped us enlist top BPM talent to share their insights and recommendations (pages 6-8). For the first time, we also reached out to the fans, asking BPM veterans to share their wisdom. The response was overwhelming submissions ran the gamut from safety tips to favorite restaurants, and its clear that for those who have been, The BPM Festival occupies a very special place in their hearts. Thank you to everyone who put in the time and energy to share their insights and experiences this collaborative element is what makes the BPM guide our best one yet. So sit back, relax, and start dreaming of the paradise that lies ahead. I, for one, cant wait. See you in Playa!

The BPM Festivals co-founder talks Playa del Carmen, artist curation, and his festival highlights.
What is it about Playa del Carmen that makes The BPM Festival so unique and helps to shape its identity? Ive been to a lot of festivals, and I think its the accessibility here. Its so easy to get around. If you want to leave, you dont have to wait three hours to get into the festival. You can walk to your hotel and you walk to the venues, so everything is easy. I think being able to just walk everywhere has made it really special. For me, I cant go to a festival and wait around to get in. How do you think the festival has evolved over the past 5 years, in terms of artists ying out, the vibe, and the general atmosphere? I think that the artists that come here really enjoy themselves. They all just get to hang out with one another. Theyre all friends, so they actually come here and vacation. They bring their girlfriends, or their wives, and some of them bring their families. Each gets a chance to intermingle and not have to run to the next event or the next party. And they all come back. They always come back every artist that has ever played for us, always comes back the next year. Who curates the artist line-up? I actually do all of the programming for the festival with a couple of the partners, but as far as the line-up goes, I think we sprinkle in a little bit of everything, because we are a music festival. And when you are a music festival, you need to have a variety of different genres. You have techno, house, and you have a little bit of commercial music to give people a chance to hear everything. Weve done that since the beginning and I dont think were stopping. What are some highlights over the years? I think everything, I cant really single out anything. Every event weve done has been incredible.

in Playa del Carmen, youll need to book a flight and reserve your stay. Before you roll your eyes and open endless Chrome windows, check out BPMs Travel Portal. On one simple page you can compare flights, hotels, and condos and, thanks to Orbitz, youre guaranteed the lowest price. Start by entering your dates and selecting the number of people youre booking for (dont worry you can do this separately for flights and accommodations). If you selected hotels or condos, youll be directed to a list of options based on your criteria. Sort the list by tight, budget, regular, or luxury and click on a name for its availability, amenities, and prices. If your most important accommodation factor is location, look to the right of the list. Every time you select a hotel or condo, the map will show you its location and distance from BPMs venues. Flights work in a similar way, select your dates and number of people and Orbitz will filter through all airlines to bring you the cheapest and/or shortest trips. Once you select your ideal flight, youll be directed to Orbitz to complete the booking.

Booking a car in advance is a swell way to get to town, especially if you value your own space and have some extra cash to spare. With the option to book online in advance for the best rates, you can compare and contrast your options. Once you land, a representative will greet passengers with a sign with your name. Check the directory for listings of wellknown companies that do daily travel to Playa. Renting a car is common practice amongst BPM-goers, especially for those who want to explore external sites, or enjoy post-festival relaxation in Tulum. Rental cars may be reserved in advance or upon arrival.

Another option to Playa from CUN is a shared shuttle. Reserve your seat and time online before you fly or find a transportation employee organizing rides after you exit the terminal. Costs usually amount to $25 per person.
There are public buses offering non-stop service from the Cancn airport at scheduled times entering downtown Playa on Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) and Avenida Juarez. Buses leave from Terminal 3 and Terminal 2, take approximately 65 minutes, and cost 106 pesos ($10) per passenger. Tickets may be purchased from a booth inside the terminal or right at the door. Only speak with employees wearing an ADO logo on their shirt to avoid possible scams.

Do not stay at the resorts, as having to take cabs back and forth will get annoying and whats better than being in the heart of the action with your friends and walking distance to all the events? - My Favorite Robot If you are traveling with a group of friends, look for a condo rental with a kitchen so you can cook food and make drinks at any time. NOROVIRUS
A Mexican vacation can be all about fun in the sun (and great music!), as long as you watch out for the Norovirus illness. The virus causes your stomach and/or intestines to become inflamed, leading to stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. To prevent the virus, wash your hands frequently, avoid those who have contracted it, and be cautious of the restaurants you dine in. If you happen to come down with the illness, your discomfort will usually last 3 days and will pass on its own. Since its not bacterial in nature, antibiotics wont work and antidiarrheal medications (i.e. Pepto-Bismol) may only increase its duration. The best thing to do is to stay hydrated. Opt for water and drinks with electrolytes like Gatorade and avoid caffeine and alcohol (seriously) at all costs. If the dehydration is becoming too much to alleviate with sports drinks, try an over-the-counter oral rehydration fluid. Think you need professional care? Find a hospital and doctor in our directory.

land
Transportation within Playa is fairly simple if you follow our lead.
is easy to navigate, as the layout of its downtown area is in a rectangular grid. The main east-west street is Avenida Juarez. It connects Highway 307 (Carretera Federal 307 Chetumal Puerto Jurez) with the town square, El Zocolo, near the beach. Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, is the north-south avenue closest to the beach and is closed to traffic from El Zocolo to Calle 6. If you leave El Zocolo and the downtown area, it is handy to know the east-west streets parallel to Avenida Juarez are numbered Calles (streets), with even numbers to the north and odd numbers to the south. The other main east-west street, Avenida Constituyentes, is found in place of Calle 18. To the south of the downtown town square area is Playacar a golf course development made up of private residences and nearly a dozen resort hotels where many people find lodging during the festival.

Playa is pedestrian friendly, making it easy to walk between attractions and parties. The best street for walking is Quinta Avenida, which does not allow cars except in the early morning hours for deliveries. Here youll find numerous hotels, restaurants, and shops. The other main drag is Avenida 30, five blocks west, where the bigger retailers are found. Taxis are accessible at many intersections along the length of Quinta Avenida. A taxi taken from a sitio (taxi queue) will be slightly more expensive than one caught on the street. Taxi fares run on a zone system and are generally quite low. Keep a copy of the zone map with you to make sure youre never overcharged. If you decide to rent a car after leaving the airport, try the smaller companies located in Playa. Happy Car, CP Rentals, and Veloz are a few local options that your hotel can connect you to. Some car companies will drop the car off at your hotel and pick it up at the end of the rental period, just ask before you confirm your reservation. Prior to renting a car, educate yourself on how insurance works in Mexico by contacting your own car insurance company and credit card company. Ask whether you have rental car insurance and whether that insurance will cover you driving a vehicle rented in Mexico. Liability insurance, required by law in Mexico, will be sold to you regardless. Its usually a small fee, and most quoted prices include both tax and insurance. ADO buses service destinations in Playa and beyond. They depart from the Playa bus station at the southern end of Avenida 5 and Avenida Juarez. First class ADO buses usually depart hourly for destinations like Xcaret and Tulum with fares costing around $4 USD. Second class Mayab buses also leave from the Playa bus station but have more frequent stops en route and drop off alongside the highway to Tulum. Colectivo vans are an alternative to bus services. They are inexpensive government regulated air-conditioned vans that transport people along Highway 307 along the coast between Playa and Tulum. They leave and return to Playa from Calle 2 between Avenidas 10 and 15. Pick-up times are approximately every 10 minutes and drop-off locations are along the freeway.

Coba is a Pre-Colombia Mayan archaeological site translated from Mayan to mean water stirred by the wind. The 30 square mile site, along with Chichen Itza and Tulum, is one of the most striking sites for Mayan ruins. Coba contains the second highest temple in the Mayan world.

ThE CENOTES
Found all over the Yucatan, Cenotes are formed as a result of sinkholes in the limestone bedrock that expose groundwater underneath the Rivera. These pools were seen as a religious site, as they provided fresh water to the Mayans. Many cenotes are available to the public to view, scuba dive, and zip line. If you are looking for some adventurous party rest, there are lots of cenotes like Doso Ojos or Boca del Puma you could go to. Best way is to ask local youngsters that live in Playa instead of getting mocked by expensive tours. They usually know best and will be more probable they dont let you down. If youre lucky enough they might take you themselves to excellent hidden non-commercial Cenotes that are still part of nature. - Carlos Kaim Beautiful caves where there are parties all night long. TRANSPORtAtION
Tulum is situated south of Playa del Carmen and Cancn, 40 miles and 81 miles, respectively. Since it is located off Riviera Mayas main highway, renting a car to drive yourself is denitely an option. For a route with someone else behind the wheel, opt for public transportation.

An ADO bus is available for $50 MXN (around $5 USD) nearly every hour at the bus station on the southern end of Fifth Avenue near Playacar with stops in Xcaret and Xel-ha en route.

Mayab second-class buses will also take you to Tulum from Playa, but will stop more frequently. Fares range from $38-48 MXN (less than $5). Your cheapest option will most likely be a Collectivo van. Catch one in Playa along Calle 2 towards Avenida 20 at $40 MXN per trip. Theres no set schedule, but they depart frequently.

You can catch a two-hour ADO bus to Tulum directly from Cncun airport three times a day. Ticket prices are about $168 MXN (around $16 USD).
IN TULUm
Once there, youre set. Tulum is small enough that walking is a feasible option, but a dusty one at that. Taxis can also be taken for longer distances though bikes are encouraged and are readily available to rent. Hola Bike will deliver a bike to your hotel, apartment, or condo in Tulum (or in Playa del Carmen, Cancun, and Puerto Morelos) and give you the option between a mountain or a cruiser, both with adjustable seats and locks included.
