3 Types of Marine Animals

(those that float), Nekton(those that actively swim), Benthos (those that live on or in the ocean bottom).

typically the tiny animals found near the surface in aquatic environments. Like phytoplankton, zooplankton are usually weak swimmers and usually just drift along with the currents.

are all the organisms that swim in the ocean freely.

collection of marine and freshwater organisms that can swim freely and are generally independent of currents, ranging in size from microscopic organisms to whales The oceanic nekton is composed of a wide variety of bony fish, sharks, rays, and to a lesser extent, mammals and reptiles.

Benthos
The

benthos live on the ocean floor. Starfish, oysters, clams, sea cucumbers, brittlestars and anemone are all benthos. Most benthos feed on food as it floats by or scavenge for food on the ocean floor.
