AP English Language and AP English Literature Whats the Difference?

Every year, hundreds of thousands of high school students in the United States take the Advanced Placement Course in English Language and English Literature in preparation for the Advanced Placement test in these areas. The tests are given y the College !oard of the United States of America . The College !oard is a non"profit organi#ation that aims to provide chances for all students to take academically challenging programs and pro$ects that %ill provide them college success opportunity. Those %ho get high scores %ill e given credits in some English su $ects %hen they go to college. This means that students %ho get remarka le scores may not enroll some of their English courses. !oth tests focus on English ut they differ in many %ays. &irst, they differ in content. AP English Language aims to develop students' skills in reading non"fiction prose in diverse rhetorical conte(ts. Through this course, the students ac)uire %riting skills that %ill help them produce compositions that are engaging and rich in content. *n the other hand, AP English Literature is designed to motivate students to read, e(plore, and analy#e classical and modern literature. Students %ho take the course and pass the test are found to perform etter ecause of their e(perience. The second difference is on the level of students %ho take the e(aminations. +ormally, Advanced Placement Course in English Language is given to $unior high school students %hile English Literature is usually given to senior high school students. Third, there is a difference in the content of the course. &or AP English Literature, the College !oard gives a list of readings for students to study in the fields of poetry, drama, novels, and short stories, ranging from the %orks of classical and modern %riters. *n the other hand, for AP English Language, the course includes non"fiction %orks for students to read and analy#e. &ourth, there is a difference in the coverage of the tests. &or AP English Language, the e(amination contains )uestions on rhetorical devices and structures of the passage. Students' skills in identifying the general functions and purposes of the passage and the relationships et%een them are tested. Test takers are also asked to ans%er )uestions from reading passages to test their a ility to synthesi#e, analy#e, and argue. AP English Literature E(amination, on the other hand, tests the students' critical reading skills. E(aminees are given literary pieces to read. Then, they %ill ans%er )uestions pertaining to content, form, and style of the literary %ork. The students are also given items that re)uire free response to test their a ility to analy#e and interpret the literary %ork given. Some high schools offer these courses to students %ho %ant to gra the opportunity to ac)uire advanced credits %hen they enter college. ,o%ever, these courses are offered online. -f you find taking the course in your school too much for your already hectic schedule, or if your school does not offer these t%o courses, you can study online. There are many online schools offering AP English Language and AP English Literature. Taking these courses online %ill ena le you to continue %ith your regular high school program %ithout e(periencing a very tight schedule. -n addition, online programs for these courses have plenty of practice e(aminations that you can take to familiari#e yourself %ith the actual test. -n short, %hile the t%o courses are different, oth of them can e taken through onlineprograms.
