Om ! Let my limbs and speech, Prana, eyes, ears, vitality And all the senses grow in strength. All existence is the Brahman of the Upanishads. ay ! never deny Brahman, nor Brahman deny me.

Let there be no denial at all" Let there be no denial at least from me. ay the virt#es that are proclaimed in the Upanishads be in me, $ho am devoted to the Atman% may they reside in me. Om ! Let there be Peace in me ! Let there be Peace in my environment ! Let there be Peace in the forces that act on me !

&od 'attatreya is the reincarnation of the fo#r armed (ishn# and he is the r#ler of the world. )an*rithi is a great devotee and a sage and is an expert in yoga and also a disciple of 'attatreya. +e approached his teacher ,&od 'attatreya- with h#mility and with folded hands, when his teacher was alone and re.#ested him, /Oh &od, please tell me abo#t the science of yoga which has eight branches and five different sthanas ,places- by *nowing which ! will attain salvation. 'attatreya told him, /+ey )an*rithi, ! shall tell yo# abo#t 0oga which has eight branches. 1he eight branches are 0ama, 2iyama, Aasana, Pranayama, Prathyahara, 'harana, 'hyana and )amadhi.

0ama which is the first is the practice of non3violence, tr#th, non possession of properties of others, celibacy, mercy, honesty, patience, stability, food discipline and cleanliness. 4

2iyama is the ten aspects of penance, 5oy, orthodoxy, charity, worship of god, hearing of philosophy, fear for bad actions, clear intellect, chanting and a#sterities. 6

1he nine important Asanas ,sitting positions- are )wasthi*a ,)wasti*a-, &om#*ha ,cows face-, Padma ,lot#s-, (eera ,valoro#s-, )imha ,lion-, Badra ,safe-, #*tha ,free-, ay#ra ,peacoc*- and )#*ha ,pleasant-. Oh sage, that position, whatever it may be b#t which ma*es yo# comfortable and gives yo# co#rage to #nderta*e 0oga is called )#*hasana. People who do not have

strength to ta*e #p other positions can #se that. (ictory in the seating position is li*e victory over the three worlds. Once the Asana is fixed, one sho#ld practice Pranayama. 7

8ither in the top of the mo#ntain or by the shore of the river or #nder a Bilwa tree in the forest, after choosing a clean place which is acceptable to the mind and after establishing a place to do tapas ,Asram-, sit in the Asana which is most familiar facing either east or north. 1hen sit with the body nec* and head in a straight line, cover the face and concentrate the vision with best possible attention on the nectar flowing from the fo#rth state of the moon li*e dot at the end of the nose. 'raw the air inside #sing the l#ngs, store it in the stomach, meditate on the flame of fire inside the body and then shift meditation to the root of fire with its so#nd and dot. 1hen the intelligent one will exhale and draw the Prana #sing Pingala ,2adi which is tawny and is on the right side of )#sh#mna 2adi- and meditate on the Agni Bhee5a. Again he has to exhale and inhale again in the middle #sing the !da ,2adi which is pleasant and is on the left side of )#sh#mna-. One sho#ld have to live in a secret place practicing this exercise six times for 739 days or 739 wee*s at dawn, noon and d#s*. 1his wo#ld help him to clean #p the 2adis. )lowly symbols will start showing #p. Body will become light, the fire in the stomach will b#rn well and the voice wo#ld become clearer. 1hese are the symbols of )iddhi ,getting mastery-. 1ill yo# see this, yo# have to practice. 9

2ow ! will tell yo# abo#t Prathyahara. 1o #se force and divert the sensory organs which normally travel according to their nat#re is Prathyahara. 1hose who *now Brahma say that seeing whatever we see as the form of Brahman is Prathyahara. Prathyahara also is doing clean or #nclean acts as those belonging to Brhaman. :#rther doing daily religio#s activities after dedicating them to &od and similarly doing the activities which we desire is also Prathyahara. Apart from this inhaling air ,oxygen- and stopping it in different places is also Prathyahara. 1he wise man wo#ld sit in )wasthi*asana, draw his breath till it fills #p from head to toe and hold it in two feet, mooladhara, stomach, middle of the heart, bottom of the nec*, 5aw, middle of the eyelids, forehead and at the top of the s*#ll. 1hen he sho#ld leave o#t the belief that the body is oneself and ma*e that tho#ght as nirvi*alpa and merge it with Paramatma. 1he experts in (edanta say that this is tr#e Prathyahara. 1here is nothing that cannot be attained by those who practice li*e this. ;

2ow ! will tell yo# abo#t the five types of 'harana ,holding steady 3 a stage in meditation 3 here we try to hold on what we are mediating #pon witho#t wavering-. !n the s*y which is in the middle of the body, 'harana of the s*y

o#tside sho#ld be made. )imilarly in the breath, 'harana of air o#tside sho#ld be made. !n the fire in the stomach, 'harana of the fire o#tside sho#ld be made. !n the fl#id aspects of the body, 'harana of the water o#tside sho#ld be made. !n the earthy aspects of the body, 'harana of the earth o#tside sho#ld be made. )age, also it is necessary to chant the pancha bhootha mantras vi<., +am, 0am, =am, (am and Lam. !t is said that this very great 'harana destroys all sins. !n the body #p to the *nee is the aspect of the earth, from there till hip it is the aspect of water, #p to the heart is the aspect of fire, #p to middle of eyelids is the aspect of air and then #p to the middle of the s*#ll is the aspect of the s*y. !n the aspect of earth Brahma has to be placed, in the aspect of water (ishn# sho#ld be placed, in the aspect of fire =#dra sho#ld be placed, in the aspect of air !swara sho#ld be placed and in the aspect of s*y, the )adashiva sho#ld be placed. +ey great sage, ! will also tell yo# another 'harana. !n the >eevatma, that lord )hiva who r#les over everything and is the personification of wisdom sho#ld be placed. 1o get rid of all sins, the wise man sho#ld s#ppress the gods li*e Brahma in the ca#sative self, and place the Avya*ta ,that which is not clear- which is formless and which is the root ca#se inside the entire so#l with the chanting of pranava. +e sho#ld control the sensory organs by mind and sho#ld merge them with the so#l. ?

! will now tell yo# abo#t 'hyana ,meditation- which destroys sorrow. 'hyana sho#ld be done of that aheswara, who is the medicine for problems arising o#t of birth, who is the discipline and f#ndamental basis of the world who is of the form of Para Brahma, who has the masc#line power #pwards, who is of the form of the world, who is (ir#pa*sha, and who is the head of all yogis as /! am +e@. 1hen contin#e to do 'hyana of him who is beyond the reach of meditation, who is the personification of )achidananda Brahman and who is so#l in person as /! am +e@ for attaining salvation. !n the mind of that great P#r#sha who practices li*e this, the science of (edanta wo#ld a#tomatically appear. 1here is no do#bt abo#t it. A

2ow ! will tell yo# abo#t )amadhi ,deep meditative state- which destroys the ills of birth and death. )amadhi is that state in which there is *nowledge that >eevatma and Paramatma are one. Atma ,so#l- is filled all over for ever and does not have motion or stain. 1ho#gh it is one, d#e to the effects of ill#sion, it appears as different ob5ects. =eally there is no difference between these so called ob5ects. $hen one sees all ob5ects within himself and him as a part of all ob5ects, +e attains Brahman. $hen one drowns himself in )amadhi and does not see different ob5ects as different , then he attains the single aim of salvation. $hen he sees only the tr#e so#l and the entire world appears as an ill#sion to him and he is c#red of all sorrow.

1h#s advised by Lord 'attatreya the sage )an*rithi f#lly lost all his fear and attained that blissf#ll state, deep in himself.
