George de Mohrenschildt
George de Mohrenschildt (Apr 17 (Gregoran caendar), 1911 w March
29, 1977) was a petroeum geoogst who befrended Lee Harvey Oswad
durng the months precedng the assassnaton of U.S. Presdent |ohn F.
Kennedy.
Early life
George de Mohrenschdt was born n Mozyr n Tsarst Russa, near the
border of Poand (hs brthdate was Apr 4, od-stye Russan |uan
caendar). Hs weathy father, Sergus Aexander von Mohrenschdt, an
ant-Communst, was arrested and put n prson by the Boshevks shorty
after the Russan Revouton. After beng sentenced to fe as an exe n
Sbera, he managed to escape wth hs famy to Poand durng the 1920s,
where George graduated from a mtary academy n 1931. He receved
the equvaent of a doctor of scence of nternatona commerce from the
Unversty of L w ge n 1938.
When de Mohrenschdt mmgrated to the Unted States n May 1938,
Brtsh ntegence reportedy notfed the U.S. government they
suspected he was workng for German ntegence and by some accounts
he was under FBI surveance for a tme. At frst, de Mohrenschdt worked
for the Shumaker company n New York Cty, purportedy under Perre
Frass, who had connectons wth French ntegence and accordng to de
Mohrenschdt (see hs Warren Hearng testmony) was engaged n
gatherng nformaton about peope engaged n "pro-German" actvtes,
such as Naz bddng for U.S. o eases before the U.S. became nvoved n
the war. In hs testmony, de Mohrenschdt makes t cear that hs data-
coecton was ant-Naz actvty, snce t was amed at hepng the French,
by out-bddng the Germans.
De Mohrenschdt spent the summer of 1938 wth hs oder brother Dmtr
on Long Isand, New York, where he became acquanted wth the Bouver
famy, ncudng young |acke, future wfe of |ohn F. Kennedy, and became
a cose frend of |acke's aunt Edth Bouver Beae.
He dabbed n the nsurance busness from 1939 to 1941, but faed to
pass hs broker's examnaton. In 1941, de Mohrenschdt became
assocated wth Fm Facts n New York, a producton company owned by
hs cousn Baron Mayde who was sad to have pro-Naz sympathes (de
Mohrenschdt faty dened any Naz sympathes of hs own, snce he was
hepng rase money for the Posh resstance). De Mohrenschdt made a
documentary fm about resstance fghters n Poand but when the Unted
States entered Word War II hs appcaton to |on the Offce of Strategc
Servces (OSS) was re|ected.
George's eder brother Dmtr von Mohrenschdt was a staunch ant-
Communst and member of the OSS and one of the founders of the CIA's
Rado Free Europe and Amcomb (aka Rado Lberty) statons. Hs
contacts ncuded top offcas of the agency. Dmtr ded at the age of
100 n 2002.
George receved a master's degree n petroeum geoogy from the
Unversty of Texas n 1945.
Dallas, Oswald and Haiti
After the war de Mohrenschdt setted n Daas, Texas, and took a |ob
wth oman Cnt Murchson as a petroeum geoogst. He became a U.S.
ctzen n 1949. Descrbed as sophstcated and artcuate, he became a
respected member of the Russan emgre communty n Daas, teachng
at a oca coege, workng for varous o companes as a geoogst and
traveng throughout the Amercas wth hs fourth wfe, |eanne, whom he
marred n 1959.|1|
Lee Harvey Oswad and hs Russan wfe Marna Oswad were ntroduced
to de Mohrenschdt n the summer of 1962 n Fort Worth, Texas. De
Mohrenschdt had heard of the Oswads from one of the Russan-speakng
group of wmgrws n the Daas-Fort Worth area. George and |eanne
befrended them, tryng to hep them as best they coud, aong wth
ntroducng them nto the Russan communty. In hs Warren Commsson
testmony n 1964, de Mohrenschdt stated that he beeved he had
dscussed Oswad wth |. Waton Moore, of the Daas offce of the CIA,
whom de Mohrenschdt had known snce 1957. De Mohrenschdt
asserted that shorty after meetng Oswad he asked Moore and Ft. Worth
attorney Max Cark about Oswad to reassure hmsef that t was "safe" for
the de Mohrenschdts to assst Oswad. Accordng to hs testmony, de
Mohrenschdt was tod by one of the persons he taked to about Oswad,
athough he sad he coud not remember who t was, that "the guy seems
to be OK." (Moore sad n a 1978 ntervew for the House Seect
Commttee on Assassnatons that the aegatons that de Mohrenschdt
asked Moore's "permsson" to contact Oswad were fase.)
On Apr 13, 1963, three days after Oswad's attempt on the fe of
conservatve actvst Genera Edwn Waker at hs home n Daas (for
whch the poce had no suspects),|2| the de Mohrenschdts vsted the
Oswads' apartment. George, knowng Oswad's dske of Waker, |oked to
Oswad upon entry, "Hey, Lee! How s t possbe that you mssed?" Lee
and Marna ooked at each other but sad nothng.|3| |4| |eanne de
Mohrenschdt ater saw a rfe standng aganst the wa n a room that
served as Oswad's study.|5| When she and George asked why Lee owned
a rfe, Marna and Lee both reped that t was for target shootng.|6|
In |une 1963, de Mohrenschdt moved to Hat, where he and other
nvestors had set up an ndustra deveopment enterprse whose work
was to ncude conductng a geoogca survey of Hat to pot out o and
geoogca resources on the sand. After Kennedy was assassnated, he
testfed before the Warren Commsson n 1964. (For ths testmony n the

Hat n 1967 and returned to Daas.
Later fe & death
In 1977 Dutch |ournast Wem Otmans went to Texas and brought de
Morenschdt to Hoand. After de Mohrenschdt arrved n Hoand,
Otmans nvted hm wth some Russan frends. They went to Brusses and
had pans to go to Lege,a Begum cty n the french speakng part of
Begum. The famy of Otmans owned a famyhouse not far from Lege
on the countrysde. They ke to stay there. In Brusses de Mohrenschdt
suddeny dsappeared after he made a sma wak before he woud go for
unch wth Otmans and hs frends. Otmans wated for hm but he ddn't
come back. Months ater the poce found the dead body of Mr de
Morhenschdt n Forda. Otmans concuson s that the CIA or agents
connected to the nner crce of the CIA ked de Mohrenschdt because
he was ready to te the rea story of hs nvovement n the assassnaton
of Kennedy to the |ournast Wem Otmans. Lee Havey Oswat was not
the man who ked Kennedy accordng |ournast Wem Otmans.He was
ony the mask. The CIA ked the ony wtness de Mohrenschdt before he
coud te the whoe story.
For reasons unknown, George and |eanne de Mohrenschdt quety
obtaned a dvorce n Daas, Texas on 3 Apr 1973, after neary fourteen
years of marrage.|7| It was not reported n the oca newspapers, and the
coupe contnued to present themseves as husband and wfe.|8|
By the eary 1970s, reportedy, de Mohrenschdt's behavor eaned
towards the erratc. On September 17, 1976, the CIA requested that the
FBI ocate de Mohrenschdt, because he had "attempted to get n touch
wth the CIA Drector."|9| De Mohrenschdt had "wrtten a etter to the
Drector of the Centra Integence Agency askng for hs assstance. It
seems that Sub|ect fees he s beng harassed as a resut of hs
nvovement wth the OSWALD case."|10| George Bush wrote back:
Let me say first that I know it must have been difficult for you to seek my
help in the situation outlined in your letter. I believe I can appreciate your
state of mind in view of your daughter's tragic death a few years ago, and
the current poor state of your wife's health. I was extremely sorry to hear
of these circumstances. In your situation I can well imagine how the
attentions you described in your letter affect both you and your wife.
However, my staff has been unable to find any indication of interest in
your activities on the part of Federal authorities in recent years. he flurry
of interest that attended your testimony before the !arren "ommission
has long subsided. I can only speculate that you may have become
#newsworthy# again in view of the renewed interest in the $ennedy
assassination, and thus may be attracting the attention of people in the
media. I hope this letter had been of some comfort to you, %eorge,
although I reali&e I am unable to answer your 'uestion completely.

On November 9, 1976, |eanne had hm commtted to a menta nsttuton
n Texas for three months, and sted n a notarzed affdavt four prevous
sucde attempts whe he was n the Daas area. In the affdavt she
stated that George suffered from depresson, heard voces, saw vsons,
and beeved that the FBI and the |ewsh Mafa were persecutng hm.
On March 16, 1977, de Mohrenschdt returned to the Unted States from
hs trp n Begum where he suddeny dsappeared n Brusses. Hs
daughter taked wth hm at ength and found hm to be deepy dsturbed
about certan matters and had expressed a desre to commt sucde. De
Mohrenschdt contacted Kennedy assassnaton researcher Edward |ay
Epsten, tod hm that he needed money, and accepted $4,000 for an
ntervew to be pubshed n +eader's )igest, durng whch he camed that
n 1962 a CIA operatve n Daas named Moore asked hm to earn what
he coud about Oswad's actvtes n the Sovet Unon. De Mohrenschdt
sad that n exchange he receved hep n an o transacton he was
attemptng to negotate wth Hatan dctator Papa Doc Duvaer. When the
Hatan government gave de Mohrenschdt the contract n March 1963, he
presumed t was payment for assstng the CIA. On March 29, 1977, whe
on a break from the ntervew, de Mohrenschdt receved a card from
Gaeton Fonz, an nvestgator for the House Seect Commttee on
Assassnatons.

Days ater, on Apr 1, 1977, |eanne de Mohrenschdt gave the House
Seect Commttee on Assassnatons a photograph taken of Lee Harvey
Oswad, by hs wfe Marna, standng n hs Daas backyard hodng two
newspapers and a rfe, and wth a psto on hs hp. The exstence of ths
prnt, whe smar to others whch had been found among Oswad's
effects on November 23, 1963, was prevousy unknown.

month n Roman numeras, and means 5 Apr 1963| |12| aong wth the
words wCopyrght Geo de Mw' and a Russan phrase transated as
w'Hunter of fascsts, ha-ha-ha!w Handwrtng specasts ater concuded
that the words wTo my frend Georgeww and Oswad's sgnature were
wrtten by Lee Harvey Oswad but coud not determne whether the rest
was the wrtng of Lee Oswad, George de Mohrenschdt or Marna
Oswad. Some hstorans have specuated the Russan ne was wrtten by
Marna, n sarcasm. (George de Mohrenschdt n hs memor transated t
as "Ths s the hunter of fascsts, ha, ha, ha!" and aso assumed that
Marna had wrtten t sarcastcay).
George de Mohrenschdt wrote n hs manuscrpt (reference and pages
cted above) that he had mssed Oswad's photograph n packng for the
move to Hat n May, 1963, and ths was why he hadn't mentoned t to
the Warren Commsson (though he had noted n hs manuscrpt that
Oswad had a rfe n Apr, 1963, because he had seen t n the apartment
at Easter and scoffed to Lee that he had mssed Genera Waker,
rememberng n memory that Lee had banched at the |oke). Accordng to
de Mohrenschdt, the photo was not found among hs stored papers unt
hs wfe found t n 1967. When anayzed by the HSCA n 1977, ths photo
turned out to be a frst generaton prnt of the backyard photo aready
known to the Warren commsson as CE-133A, and whch had probaby
been taken on March 31, 1963.
Meoir
|eanne de Mohrenschdt aso gave the HSCA commttee a copy of a
manuscrpt caed I *m a -atsy. I *m a -atsy. whch George de
Mohrenschdt had recenty wrtten about hs reatonshp wth hs "dear,
dead frend" Oswad, wheren he sad that the Lee Oswad he knew, whe
capabe of voence and petty meanness, woud not have been the sort of
person to have ked |ohn F. Kennedy. In part ths |udgment was based on
de Mohrenschdt's estmaton of Oswad's potca vews and Kennedy's
bera deas. The memor has never been pubshed as a trade book but
has been avaabe onne snce the entre typescrpt was pubshed as an

Mohrenschdt's testmony to the Warren Commsson n eary 1964,
however, pants a qute dfferent vew of Oswad w a man de
Mohrenschdt sad he consdered a "kd" and not a frend. Due to the

(one gven under some duress and the other wrtten ostensby for money)

One of the CDL's contacts was Captan Robert K. Brown, a speca forces

Sencers, Snpers and Assassns. The book expans how Mtche WerBe

hstoran Afred Godberg attended. One of |enner's cents was Genera
Dynamcs, maker of the F-111 fghter that woud acheve fame n Vetnam.
The chef of securty for Genera Dynamcs n Daas, Max Cark, was
another De Mohrenschdt assocate donatng money to hep Marna whe
George got Lee hs next |ob n Daas. He found one at the graphcs house

member empoyed by the Howard Hughes organzaton. In 1977 George
