Three Idiots: All is Well

What is wrong with being number 2? Tuesdays with Morrie. This question
may be a fine description of the values shown in the movie, Three Idiots. It is a
deeply moving story about the life of three Indian engineering students named
Farhan, Raju and Rancho. Farhan, on one hand, obeyed his parents, especially his
dad, all his life. He took up engineering because it was his dads dream although he
really wanted to be a wildlife photographer. Raju, on the other hand, was a
remarkable student in his early school years but he succumbed to his fears which
made him 2nd to the last in college. Their lives changed when they met an
extraordinary man who became their roommate. And his name is Rancho. Those
who watched the movie may state that Rancho was the one who brings
enlightenment. Yes most of the time that was true. Without the complicated
circumstances in Farhans and Rajus lives, Rancho would not be able to teach the
viewers about life. Without the people who need illumination, his guidance would
not be that appreciated. Its like lighting a candle in broad daylight.
In this essay, I would group the values I have learned from Rancho into three: (a)
The light Rancho to Farhan, (b) How Raju became free from his fears, and (c)
Rancho and his view on Education.
A. The light Rancho shed to Farhan
Farhans life was dictated by his father from the day he was born.
When he saw that he was a boy, he said: Hes going to be an engineer. And
that came true. It was Rancho who discovered Farhans potential and passion
in photography but his dad discouraged him because his grades went down
(but still it was in the 90% rank). Rancho believed in Farhan and made him
believe in his potentials, too. Because of Rancho, Farhan started to pursue
what he wanted and not what his dad wanted. Many times in our life, we are
like that. Most of the time, we say, Im so sad for I only got 80 in a 100-item
exam. We bother with the results too much that we tend to forget about the
blessings we have just received. We frequently complain that we could not
see the things that matter more: our passion, the things that make us happy,
or the things that enlighten us. Moreover, we also needed others to believe in
us before we finally believe in ourselves. Nobody knows what our future will
be. Thus, believe and say: All is well!
B. How Raju became free from his fears
Raju, although Hindi, resembled the way Christians behave in times of
need; he prays and spends a fortune in prayer rings. Yes, one should not
cease praying; its an honourable act. However, Raju surrendered to his fears

and let them eat him whole. Praying without letting go of your fears is
praying half-heartedly. Furthermore, it is praying without faith. Good thing
Rancho motivated Raju to believe in himself and to let go of his fears.
Everybody, regardless of his/her religion, should always keep in mind that no
lucky charms or prayer rings could solve ones problems. Get rid of your
doubts, worries and uncertainties and keep in mind the saying Nasa Diyos
ang awa, nasa tao ang gawa. Lastly, if confusion prevails, knock sense in
your heart and mind by saying: All is well!
C. Rancho and his view on Education and on Life
Ranchoddas, or Phunsukh Wangdu, is a symbol for the ideal learner.
He has a rare passion for acquiring knowledge; hes like a sponge that keeps
on absorbing everything. Also, he loves what hes doing. He loves
engineering so much that he enjoys everything and not once did he
complain. Moreover, he did not compete for ranking in school; for him, the
race did not matter. He said, "Pursue excellence, and success will follow,
pants down!" While most of his contemporaries went to college for a degree,
and with the belief that no degree meant no plum job, no pretty wife, no
credit card, no social status, none of this mattered to him. He was in college
for the joy of learning; he never cared if he was first or last. Every student
should aim to have at least a portion of his enthusiasm in education.
Furthermore, his philosophies in life holds true for every soul in this
planet. Optimism is hard to acquire but according to him, our hearts are
easily fooled, so in every tribulation, just whisper, All is well. If only all of us
were like him, our country, and even our world, could be a place of peace and
harmony.
Three idiots is a very touching movie that talks about passions, purposes,
dreams, and in a broader dimension, about life, education, religion, family, and
friendship. Basically, it talks about the things that matter. How you listen to your
heart. How you find who you really are, your value, and what is the most important
thing for you. And more importantly, live life to the fullest. Live it to the extent that
whenever you encounter a tribulation, run like the wind and say: All is well!
