PREREQUISITES: None CREDIT HOURS: Non-Credit DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring 2014 EFFECTIVE DATE OF THIS REVISION: Spring 2014 CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This course is an overview of how to manage personal finances. The course includes information in the areas of personal finances, loans, credit, and investing PURPOSE OF COURSE: This is an introductory level personal finance course. The purpose of this course is to provide students with a brief introduction to personal finance topics such as selecting and maintaining bank accounts; using credit wisely; learning the parts of a loan; learning about credit reports; learning how to create personal budgets; learning about investing and preparing for retirement and learning ways to improve your financial situation. This course uses real world scenarios to teach the concepts of personal money management. This course provides foundational knowledge in the area of personal finance and gives the student a basis for making informed personal financial decisions. COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After completing this course, participants will be able to: 1. Demonstrate the ability to maintain a checking and savings account. 2. Evaluate the components of loans and examine the process of a loan application. 3. Collect information concerning your personal credit status and make plans to improve financial trouble areas. 4. The online textbook is from an open source publisher and is completely free. There is NO cost to this textbook. The following chapters from the textbook will be briefly covered in this course: Chapter 1- 1.3, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 5, Chapter 7, Chapter 8, Chapter 9, Chapter 10, Chapter 11, Chapter 12, Chapter 15, Chapter 16 and Chapter 17. The assigned readings from the textbook will be used to support the concepts being taught in each course module along with other assigned readings (articles, etc.). How to Access Online Textbook: You can access the online textbook by clicking HERE. Technology Needs & Resources Because this is a web-based course, it is expected that all students who enroll in the course have Internet access and a basic understanding of computer use (e.g., using e-mail, sending attachments via e-mail, using web browsers, using word processing software such as Microsoft Word). Technical Assistance Most technical issues can be solved quickly. If you are experiencing a technical issue with Canvas and you need assistance, log into your course and click on the help tab in the upper right corner of the screen. From there you can access Canvas Guides, report problems or make suggestions on improving the system.

Course Policies & Procedures


Syllabus and Course Calendar The Syllabus and Course Calendar are two important tools to help students understand layout and pace of the course. Both documents can be found in Canvas by clicking on the syllabus tab on the left or clicking on the Calendar tab in the upper right corner. Students should check the calendar frequently to be aware of what to expect next. The calendar is a good tool to use to help guide you through the course. Since this is a self-directed online course, students may work at their own pace and complete assignments in any order that they choose. Only the assessments or mini quizzes will be graded in this course and all grades will be maintained in the grade center in Canvas. Students who complete all four session and complete all work will be able to print a certificate of completion after they have completed all of the assignments to show that they have mastered the concepts taught in the course. Course Announcements Because there are a large number of students enrolled in this course, the instructors main method of communication to students will be through the class announcements. The Class announcements will also help you stay on track in this course and help keep you aware of what is going on in the course. Instructional Method This is an online distance-learning course. The course will run for four weeks. Each weeks assignments and readings are summarized on the Course Calendar and accessed from the home screen after you log into the course in Canvas. It takes a great deal of discipline, self-motivation and effective time management skills to successfully complete an online course. Many students find it helpful to set aside specific times each week to work on course assignments. Grading This course is an officially ungraded course. However, weekly assessments will be automatically graded and grades will be maintained in Canvass online grade book so that you can track your progress in the course. Students are responsible for tracking their progress by referring to the online grade book.

IMPORTANT! Because there are a large number of students enrolled in this course, the instructors main method of communication to students will be through the class announcements. Students are encouraged to seek the assistance of their fellow students if whenever possible. There will be a general course Discussion Board that can be used to ask questions of your fellow students. You can start a conversation with your instructor by clicking on the inbox tab in the upper right corner. Once you open the inbox, type the instructor name in the To box under new messages and then type your message to your instructor in the message box. Since this is a self-paced course, you may complete your Assessments on any learning module at any time. You will be able to view your grade for the session assessments you have completed in the grade center. Students will have only one attempt for each weekly assessment. The weekly assessments will be automatically graded, and the grades posted to the grade center in Canvas.
