Even if according to Samsung, there wont be any future official updates released for the Galaxy Gio S5660 handsets, you can still improve its OS by applying a custom ROM firmware. Last time when we talked about the Gio, you were able to flash the CyanogenMod 9 software into its system, which brought the Ice Cream Sandwich OS on your smartphone. Now, I will teach you how to update the Galaxy Gio to the latest Android platform, Jelly Bean 4.1, by installing the CM 10 custom ROM on it. The procedure will be similar with the one explained for the CM9 firmware, so you have nothing to worry about. Because this is not an official update, you cant OTA receive it. You must complete a manual operation for being able to flash the same on your phone. Thats exactly what you can learn during the present step by step guide, all being explained and detailed so everybody can understand what and how to do it. Also, for being able to flash the Jelly Bean based CyanogenMod 10 ROM you will have to previously root the phone and install a custom recovery image on it. You cannot complete the below steps without performing these tasks. For rooting you must follow a suitable guide for your handset and also you should be aware as the warranty will be void. Read carefully before adventuring in changing something on your device as you can easily brick it. For the future, if you will want to regain the lost warranty, you will be able to do so, but only by downgrading to the stock ROM or by updating with an official software provided by Samsung for your Gio (not for similar Android powered smartphones). Then, the recovery image will be used for installing the CM 10 file on your phone, so getting the same isnt an option for you. As for the firmware you are about to get for your device, you should know that its still in beta stage, so there might be some bugs in the system. Dont worry though as the issues will be removed as soon as the CM team will provide the proper ROM. Now, this version of the update was developed and tested for the Galaxy Gio by those of xda-developers (we have them to thanks for the present guide) and according to them there are some problems with the camera and with the proximity feature. But for making a better view of the software here are the things that do work:

Things that work in CM 10 On the other hand, a backup must be completed before applying this tutorial. The data might get corrupted so you will no longer be able to use the same. Also, there are some pre requisites that must be performed, or else you will not be able to update your Galaxy Gio. I have summarized during the next list some backup tips along with the preparation operations, so check and complete the same.

Learn how to backup and then restore the current ROM in case you manage to damage it while trying to update your smartphone. Download SMS backup and restore tools for saving the text messages. Download Call log backup and restore apps for Android. Save the contacts by syncing with your Gmail account. Use a computer or SD card for saving other files. Remember to root and install a custom recovery image. Then, enable the USB debugging option from here: Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging. Also, on both your computer and phone uninstall or deactivate the security programs like antivirus or Firewall protection.

In the end make sure that your device has enough battery life for the process (at least 70%) or else charge its battery. Now, dont perform the below steps of you own a similar device with the Samsung Galaxy Gio model number S5660 because you can brick it. Just stick to my directions, dont apply thing by yourselves and everything should be just fine. So, lets get started.

How to Update Galaxy Gio S5660 to Jelly Bean 4.1 with CM 10 Custom ROM Firmware

Backup and Restore your Android device Using ClockWorkMod Recovery

Each time you decide to perform operations on your Android powered device the data saved on its storage memory or even on its SD card might be wiped out. Furthermore, if you want to do things more complicated like flashing a custom ROM, install unofficial updates, or beta firmware, you can wreck (brick) the phones system. But, there is a way in which you can avoid all these unfortunate aspects. You can make a full backup before starting the main process; and Im not referring to any backup as you should save your current ROM first. This is exactly what we will be checking during the present step by step guide: how to backup and restore your Android device before installing custom ROMs, or applying unofficial updates. And the perfect way to do it is by using the ClockWorkMod Recovery custom recovery image. With this you can backup the current ROM that is running on your phone, so in case if something goes wrong while trying to flash a new ROM into the system you will be able to revert and use the old software. This is the perfect method to use for avoiding bricking your smartphone. As you know, the warranty is void each time you want to complete one of the up mentioned operations, so backing up the software is no longer an option for you. Anyway, you need to get ClockWorkMod Recovery first. If you dont know CWM is a custom recovery designed to work on the Android platform and offer different capabilities to the users like: making backups, test custom ROMs, perform maintenance operations and so on. Now lets head to the proper guide. Make sure you read all the lines for understanding the concept and for completing a full and safe backup of your ROM. Also you will learn how to install and use CWM, so dont skip sections of the tutorial.

How to Backup and Restore your Android device Using ClockWorkMod Recovery
1. First, you should root your device as you cannot install ClockWorkMod Recovery on an un-rooted handset. Check our previous posts as you can find a how to root guide suitable for your device.

2. Then you should know that not all the smartphones are being able to support the tool. So, before starting to do something, check here and see if your phone is on the list. 3. Then, after checking the compatibility and rooting the handset you must go on Google Play and search for the ROM Manager app. 4. Install the same. 5. Then open the tool. 6. Select the flash ClockWorkMod Recovery option. 7. Then, just select Backup Current ROM and follow the prompts. 8. The backup will be completed once you reboot the smartphone. 9. Now, if you decide to install a custom ROM into the system and something wrong happens just restore the backed up firmware by opening the app again and choosing Manage and Restore Backup and then Restore. 10. You will have the old OS as soon as you reboot the device. So, there you have it; thats how you can backup the current ROM before flashing a custom ROM, or update your Android device with an unofficial firmware, and this by using the ClockWorkMod Recovery tool. If you want to backup the rest of the files from your handset too, you can use other apps, or methods. In this way you can save your personal info whether it is about messages, contacts, calendar saves, Market apps and who knows what else. Just follow the links from below and you should be able to perform a full and safe backup of your Android powered phone:

Download SMS backup and restore for Android. Download Call log and restore apps for Android. Sync contacts with your Google Gmail account.
