    Ifoneweretoexamineandcomparethereceptionofsomeonebeingalesbianinthe70sand today,itwouldbeeasytosayhowmuchmoreacceptingpeoplearenow.Iwasveryawareofhow differenttimeswereinthe70sforlesbians,butreadingTheWomanIdentifiedWomanby Radicalesbiansmadeitmoreclear.Readingthearticlenowwasinterestingforme,becauseIgottohear someonewhoactuallylivedduringthattimedescribetheirfrustrationwiththepeoplesperceptionof homosexuality.Iwantedtochoosethearticleformyresponsepaperbecausethereweremanythings thatintrigued,confused,andfascinatedme. Initiallyreadingthismanifesto,Iwasalittleconfused.Ididntcheckwhenitwaswrittenuntil after,soIwaswonderingwhysheseemedsoangry.Agoodmajorityofpeoplenowreallydontcare aboutonessexualorientation.Oratleastitsgettingtothatpoint.Although,onceIrealizeditwasfrom 1970,theangerseemedalotmorerational.However,thereweresomepartsthatstillconfusedme.The authorwrote,Dykeisadifferentkindofputdownfromfaggot,althoughbothimplyyouarenot playingyoursociallyassignedsexrole.Iunderstandhowtheybothmaketheimplicationabout failuretocorrectlyplayonesrole,butIwasconfusedabouthowdykeisdifferentthanfaggot. Obviouslyoneisusedforboys,andtheotherforgirls.Butbesidesthatfact,whatmakesthem different? TherewasanotherlinethatIthoughtwasintriguing.Itwas,Itshouldfirstbeunderstoodthat lesbianism,likemalehomosexuality,isacategoryofbehaviorpossibleonlyinasexistsociety

    characterizedbyrigidsexrolesanddominatedbymalesupremacy.AtfirstIwasveryconfusedbyit. Butafterrereadingthearticleacoupletimes,itmakesmoresensetome.Wealsodiscusseditinclass, whichhelpedmegetabetterunderstanding.Ithinkthewriteristryingtosaythatinasocietywhereitis notrevolvingaroundmalesupremacy,therewouldntbelesbiansorgays.Therewouldntbenamesfor anyorientation,everyonewouldjustbethesame.ThatwasthebestguessIhad,anditseemedtomake sensetome.Becauseoncesocietystartsputtinglabelsoneveryone,stereotypesariseand discriminationisinevitable.Thistheoryalsoseemstobeaffirmedlaterinthepiecewhenitsays, Lesbianisoneofthesexualcategoriesbywhichmenhavedivideduphumanity.Iagreewiththis statementtoanextent.Ithinkthatitiscompletelyfairtosaythatlabelingwomenaslesbianscomeswith alotofissues.However,Ialsothinkitwouldbedifficultforpeopletonotdistinguishseparationsfrom oneanothersexually.Itwouldbeunrealistictosaythatsocietyasawholewouldbeabletocompletely ignorethatandnotuselabels.However,Ithinkthattherecanbeawaythatsocietycanlabelpeople, butwithoutitbeinginaderogatoryway. Ifthisarticlewerewrittennow,thecontentwouldbevastlydifferent.Initially,Iwasalittletaken abackanddisturbedbyhowangrythewriterseemed.Obviously,Ididntliveduringthattimeperiod, sotheresnowayformetounderstandherfeelings.However,fromthereadingsinclassandlecturesI feellikeIcanunderstandabitmorehowreasonableitisforhertobesoangry.Peoplehavebecomea lotmoreopenandacceptingofhomosexuality,though,soIthinkthatthewriterwouldbealotmore satisfiedwithhowtheLGBTcommunityisperceivednow.Thispiecewasgoodformetorespondtoin thispaperbecausetherewasalottodiscussandquestioninit.Itisoneofthosearticlesthattakesa fewreadstocompletelyunderstandwhattheauthorwassaying.
