PANAPANAAN, JAY P.

Statement of the Problem Aviation is one of the largest and most important

industries worldwide due to its continuous evolvement and growth as it becomes one of the most used transportation across

countries. The industry is engaged in transportation of both cargo and passengers through the use of vehicles, like airplanes and helicopters, which tread on air. Hence, it is important that its mechanical aspect is constantly focused on making the

vehicle safe for passengers and cargo alike. However, despite the continuous development of the

vehicles, there are still many recorded crashes and lapses of safety due to engine failure. The aviation industry is being depended upon to make transportation through air safe, as it is considered 97% statically safer than transportation by land or water. Although it is considered to be safer, the still e!ists. Thus, this study seeks to e!plain the following" #. $hat is the most often cause of air vehicle accidents% &. 'tatically, what are the chances of mechanical failure% . $hat design would make the vehicles travelling through air safer than its current predecessors% (. )s such design feasible and practical% % chance

*. $hat are the challenges of the new design% +. How significant is the new design to the industry%

Objectives of the Study This study seeks to achieve the following ob,ectives" #. To determine whether the current design of air vehicle

engines are safe enough to transport both lives and goods across countries. &. To identify the problem and the lapses of the current air vehicle designs which lessens its reliability% . To show the challenges and problems faced by the aviation industry today due to mechanical or engine failure and how to improve such challenges.

generator as backup to the engines in case of mechanical failure. Revie of Related !iterature

There e!ist no comprehensive study on the improvement of aviation safety through the use of generator backup engines. Although there are some literature that discusses about the need for better safety measures that should be taken by the aviation industry to prevent mechanical failure, there were only a number of studies that mention a generator backup for engines. 0ost of the backup measures mentioned are the duplication of each part of the air vehicle. There are dissertations such as Engine Rotary Generator by .dward Hughes and The Study on Safety Generators by 'tephen -almer which introduces the concept of generator based back up for airplanes instead of part duplication. The case of 1obinsons v. 2ritish Airways supports the suggestion of generation backup in case the air vehicle loses electricity during its flight. )t is a landmark case wherein the mechanical The failure was caused on by both engines Safety to by fail 1obert simultaneously. book entitled More Mechanical 2rowning helps further entertain the idea of a generator backup engine as the author suggests that backup by duplication does not suffice. 0ore sources coming from different aviation ,ournals and statics studies on airplane engine will be used in this study.

'econdary sources such as the local newspaper articles will also be scrutini3ed and used to be able to present the dire need for more safety measures with air vehicles.

"once#tual $rame or% This study will focus on the problems encountered by the aviation industry and the solution to its many accidents due to engine mechanical failure. As pointed out earlier, there have been statically backed up problems due to mechanical failure, which is the cause of many tragic accidents. This study study seeks to improve upon the safety of air vehicles. Hence, a

conceptual framework of problem4solution is being used in the discussion, interpretation and analysis of a new generator

backup engine design.
