Introduction
This guide is designed for both students that come from an educational system other than the Spanish system as well as for non-Spanish students that are not resident in Spain and that would like to enroll for any of the Undergraduate, Graduate or Advanced Career and Technical Education Programs taught by Universidad Europea de Madrid at its Madrid campus locations (Universidad Europea de Madrid, its Graduate Schools and the European Career College of Madrid) in addition to the UEM Affiliated Institution at Valencia. All the above-mentioned students are included under the concept of the International Student. The guide is divided into the following sections and corresponding explanations: 1. 2. 3. 4. UEM admission process. The international student in Spain. Other useful information. Annexes.

The section UEM admission process sets out in simple terms the steps that have to be followed by the student from an educational system other than the Spanish system, from the admission application to their enrollment. This admission process to the university in Spain, as a member state of the EU, differentiates between students from an educational system of another EU Member State (and, as applicable, countries with which Spain has sig-

ned reciprocity agreements) and those students that come from an educational system other than the above. In the section The International Student in Spain , the item referring to the Student Card - NIE could apply to all students that are not Spanish nationals, while the item relating to the Visa will only apply to those students that are not nationals or residents of a Member State of the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. In the section Other useful information , you can find information regarding the intensive Spanish language courses offered for free by UEM to its International Students, financial aid for study and grants, the University Dormitories and other areas of interest that International Students may find useful. Lastly, the Annexes include information regarding LEGALIZING DEGREES as well as information and explanations relating to the UEM admission process. As part of our personalized service provided to all our students, we have set up contact addresses and telephone numbers to help answer any question you might have regarding the content of this guide.

UEM admission proccess

Depending on the program you choose (Undergraduate, Graduate or Advanced Career and Technical Education) and its study format (campus-based or online), the UEM admission process is set out below. This is generally as follow:

1. 2. 3. 4.
MAKE an appointmen ADMISSIONS tests
a. Make an appointment to take the admissions tests
(* Not applicable to Graduate programs).

SUBMISSION of documentation

ACADEMIC fees

b. Submission of the required documentation. c. Admissions tests. d. Academic fees. Enrollment and Welcome. In each section below we set out the differences existing in the process as a result of the choice of program (campus-based format, semi-campus-based or online): Undergraduate, Graduate (Qualifying Masters Degree, Specialized Masters Degree and PhD) and Advanced Career and Technical Education programs or the country of origin of the studies that the International Student has undertaken as a legal requirement for admission (degrees from educational systems of EU countries or countries with an agreement signed by Spain and degrees originating in other countries).

Making an appointment to take the admissions tests

Universidad Europea de Madrid was the first Spanish University to establish a special procedure for the Admission Process that evaluates the elements relating to the academic and professional success of each student and identifies their specific training needs. The outcome of their process helps in the preparation of a Personalized Learning Program. To start the Admission Process for Undergraduate and Advanced Career and Technical Education programs, you first have to make an appointment via INTERNET in the section on Admissions and Enrollments at www.uem.es, e-appointment. In the event that you are unable to attend the admissions tests on the date and at the time indicated, you must notify the Office of Student Affairs and New Admissions 48 hours in advance by sending an e-mail to ads@uem.es so that a new date can be assigned to you for taking the tests. Before attending the appointment, the International Student has to fill out the Admissions Application and submit the required documentation that will vary depending on the legal admission requirement of the candidate (see the following section). In the event the International Student does not come to Spain prior to the start of the program and is not yet in contact with a UEM advisor, this situation must be notified to ads@uem.es and a request made to the UEM Admissions Offices to assign an advisor that will explain the steps to be taken. If the International Student does not come to Spain prior to the start of the program but has a UEM Admissions Advisor assigned to them, the student must notify the advisor of their situation so that the latter can explain the steps to be taken.

B2. Graduate programs:

Introduction:
The aim of accredited Graduate Program tuition is for the student to obtain a specialization through their academic, professional and research training based on educational programs that lead to the achievement of Masters Degrees. The University and its Graduate Schools offer accredited degrees that are recognized by the European Higher Education Area, in addition to qualifying Masters Degrees to work professionally, specialized Masters Degrees and PhD programs. A qualifying Masters Degree is a degree program with an advanced level of specialization that qualifies its holder to undertake regulated professional activities in Spain with a curriculum that includes the conditions established by the Government for the corresponding professional work.

18

A specialized Masters Degree is a degree program offering an advanced level of training with specialized or multidisciplinary characteristics, geared towards academic or professional specialization or towards promoting the creation of research tasks. This type of program does not enable the holder to undertake professional activities that are regulated in Spain. Either of these Masters Degree formats provides access to PhD programs in accordance with the European Higher Education Area. In addition to the above-mentioned accredited degree programs, the University and its Graduate Schools offer private degrees. These degree programs include training geared towards the development of skills, abilities, aptitudes, competences and knowledge whether for initial training in a professional environment or for educational or professional improvement, to update knowledge or achieve specialization. This section applies to students or professionals that already hold degrees and that would like to undertake a Graduate program (qualifying or specialized Masters Degree, PhD or private degree program) at UEM. The required documentation for all these programs (campus-based or online study format through UEMs PERSONAL UNIVERSITY http://www.uem.es/es/ oferta-academica/uem-personal) is as follows: Admission application, completed and signed. Up-to-date rsum. Europass Language Passport. Photocopy of your Passport, NIE (Foreigners ID Number) or National ID Document if the student is an EU national. Certified copy (degrees from an educational system of an EU Member State) or legalized copy (other countries) of your university degree. 3 passport-sized photographs (3x4 cms) Even though these are quite similar, there is a special section entitled specific documentation for Phd programs. For submitting this documentation, please see the Annex: where and how to submit documentation Admission Process The admission process can be carried out in person at any of the Universidad Europea de Madrid Campus locations, via e-mail to your designated UEM Admissions Advisor or online at the following web address: www.uem.es/es/oferta-academica/ postgrado/admisiones

19

The following link offers a recommended format: www.uem. es/cvprofesionaluem. Europass Language Passport This type of Passport can be obtained via: www.uem.es/es/es/alumnos/ aprendizaje-de-idiomas. Certified or legalized photocopy of your university degree If the candidate has chosen an accredited Masters Degree (whether qualifying or specialized), they will need to submit a certified or legalized photocopy of their university degree, depending on the educational system in the country of origin of the degree. In addition, in the case of qualifying Masters Degrees, the candidate will need to accredit their Bachelors Degree that enables them to be admitted to the graduate program. The UEM Admissions Advisor will confirm each specific case. International Students or professionals with degrees issued by accredited European

20

Union universities should apply for a certified copy of their university degree. It is an essential general requirement that a copy of the university degree is submitted that has been certified by the University of origin of the said degree or by a notary. It is also possible to deliver the original document to the Campus locations at Villaviciosa de Odn or Valencia where the certified copy can be validated. Together with this certified copy of the university degree, a *Certificate of Accreditation will be required from the University of origin for the studies that have been completed, as well as accreditation of the degree itself.
*Certificate of Accreditation: A document

Depending on the country and language of the degree, a sworn translation of the same may be required. In the event that the degree is not available (for example, because it is in the process of being issued or has been mislaid), a copy of an academic certificate could be submitted that accredits the completion of the studies including all the ECTS Credits corresponding to the university degree program. This copy of the academic certificate is subject to the above-mentioned certification requirements. If the degree program that facilitates admission to the graduate program is issued under an educational system outside the European Union it will be strictly necessary to legalize the degree (see the annex on legalizing degrees). If not, the academic certificate must accredit that the credits leading to the achievement of the university degree have been passed, a process that will vary depending on the country in which the degree was obtained.

stating that both the university and the degree studied are officially accredited according to the laws of each country and that the studies taken are authorized. This document can be issued by the university of origin (signed by the Rector of the university or by the competent authority) or by the Ministry of Education of the country of origin.

Letter from the University that has issued the Masters Degree in which it states the characteristics of the degree in that country (accreditation) and the level of studies being accredited, as well as how such a degree gives direct access to the PhD in the country concerned. This document has to be signed by the Rector or the General Secretary of the University. In this case, it will be necessary to provide a copy of the curriculum of the Masters Degree taken.

21

In the event that PhD studies have already been started, the candidate must submit a letter from the University of origin, signed by the Rector or the Secretary General that accredits the level of studies achieved that enables the candidate to be admitted to carry out their doctoral dissertation in accordance with the university studies system of the country concerned. In the event of submitted documentation related to studies taken at a foreign university, so that your confirmation of enrollment is valid, candidates must submit their original documentation once they have been admitted.

Greater personalization Adapting the study formats under which the degree programs are taught resulting in students being able to choose online courses that better adapt to their personal situations. Enhancing the possibility of international study periods. Offering the chance to study courses during the summer trimester either to get a head start on work for the next academic year or to catch up with other courses that have fallen behind. The entire academic offer for BACHELORS DEGREES fall under this layout for a quarterly structure (except for the Bachelors Degree in Medicine, the Bachelors Degree in Dentistry and those degree programs that are being terminated or that are compatible with working hours, if required). The remaining degree programs will follow the semester / annual or modular structure. Confirmation of your enrollment means: Confirming your schedule and group. Choosing your schedule, if more than one is available. Accessing the Virtual Campus using the corresponding passwords. Confirming enrollment The day of the admissions tests, the Office of Student Affairs and New Admissions will provide the candidate with all the documentation and forms needed to confirm their enrollment that same day. If the International Student does not go to the Campus in advance, this documentation can be sent to them via regular mail at the address indicated. Once the ENROLLMENT has been filled out and the payment receipt obtained corresponding to the study place reservation (+ UEM Accreditation Service, as applicable), this documentation has to be submitted in accordance with the Annex: where and how to submit documentation. Enrollment is provisional and is subject to verifying the legal conditions for admission to university students and other currently applicable standards. The UEM Admissions Advisors will advise of the specific characteristics of each program in accordance with that approved by UEM under the current Standards for both undergraduate, graduate and advanced career and technical education programs. In the event of any discrepancy, the provisions and conditions of the Standards shall prevail.

29

Amendments to Enrollment For programs structured into trimesters, students will have a limited period of time to amend their enrollment as follows: Amending enrollment at the start of the academic year: 1 month from the start of the academic year. Amending enrollment during subsequent trimesters: between 1 week and 2 weeks after the start of the trimester, where only the enrollment for the trimesters following the current trimester can be amended. No amendment is permitted for courses that have already been taken unless the grade for the first or second exam periods has already been received or if all pending exam periods have been waived. Any amendment to courses made outside this period and up to the sixth week of the trimester will result in annulment of the enrollment for that course, and the consequent cancellation of its two exam periods. Students may re-enroll for the same academic year provided that they have not taken the course in question. Any change made once the period for amending the enrollment has expired will result in payment of the full amount of the course. Your UEM Admissions Advisor will answer any questions you have on this issue. Delayed enrollment The deadline for enrollment is established as up to 6 weeks from the start of the Program. Once this period as expired, the Dean of the School will have to authorize the students enrollment. Tuition

30

The annual amount of the tuition is calculated by multiplying the number of ECTS

Credits for which the student is enrolled by the unit cost of ECTS Credits, except for those programs that have fixed prices. The UEM Admissions Advisors will advise you regarding the official fees table and will notify any specific characteristics of each program in accordance with that approved by UEM under the current Standards for both undergraduate, graduate and advanced career and technical education programs. In the event of any discrepancy, the provisions and conditions of the Standards shall prevail. How is the tuition paid? The academic fees corresponding to the tuition may be paid via the following payment methods: Bank transfer or deposit in account (see the Annex: bank accounts for making payments to uem) at least 15 days prior to the start of the first course. This payment method does not release the student from the requirements to submit the duly filled out bank direct debit form. Direct debit. For this option, the International Student must have opened a Current Account in Spain (see the Annex: opening a current account in Spain). Payment methods The payment methods will be the following: One single payment. All students that select this payment method will benefit from an early payment discount (See: 3. Other useful information / B. financial aid for study / Early payment discount). In no event shall this discount apply once 30 days have passed from confirmation of enrollment. Monthly installments. Payment of the tuition can be made by spreading the tuition amount over the students in-session into equal, monthly pro rata installments, where the start of the in-session is the start date of the first course and ends on the final date of the last course. The UEM Admissions Advisors will advise you regarding the specific characteristics of each program in accordance with that approved by UEM under the current Standards for both undergraduate, graduate and advanced career and technical education programs. In the event of any discrepancy, the provisions and conditions of the Standards shall prevail. Flexible payment. This is only available to students that are enrolled for a program structured into trimesters or semesters, whose schedule is compatible with working hours or programs offered by UEMs Personal University. The amount payable will depend on the amount of tuition for each trimester, semester or module for degree programs that have schedules compatible with working hours. The tuition amount is calculated by multiplying the number of ECTS Credits for which the student is enrolled by the unit cost of ECTS Credits corresponding to each degree program (see specific academic fees table).

31

This payment method is compulsory where the student has enrolled for various trimesters or modules or degree programs with schedules compatible with working hours that are not consecutive. In the event that the candidates application is refused, or in the event that the course does not take place due to the minimum number of students failing to enroll, such circumstance shall be notified to the student or students involved and all the amounts paid to Universidad Europea de Madrid S.L.U. (Madrid Campus) or Iniciativas Educativas Educa S.L. (Valencia Campus) shall be reimbursed. To be able to select the above-mentioned payment methods, except for the early payment method via bank transfer or deposit in account, it is absolutely essential that the student has an account at a Bank or Caja de Ahorros [Savings Bank] in Spain (see Annex on opening a current account in Spain). If such an account is not available, the International Student must select the early payment method as described above. This will be a condition precedent to Confirming their Enrollment (see Annex: bank accounts for making payments to UEM). General conditions for Enrollment and Tuition. The University reserves the right not to teach a degree program or to delay its start if the minimum number of students is not achieved. In addition, it reserves the right to make changes to the location and campus on which it is taught. For courses that do not reach the minimum number of students to form a group, the University may organize the tuition under the tutorial format where the student receives supervised personal academic followup. Such circumstances will be duly notified to the student and the University will be released from any corresponding liability. Some of the new degree programs or those that have been adapted to the European Higher Education Area may still be pending definitive authorization by the academic authorities. In this case, should the University be unable to teach these degree programs due to the lack of final authorization, the University shall be released from all liabilities that may arise from such a circumstance. Notwithstanding, the University will offer the student the possibility of studying any other accredited degree programs that have already been authorized and that form part of the official academic offer for the 2012/13 academic year. In the event the student decides not to study any of the offered programs, the University will reimburse the amounts paid. In the case of Direct Debit payments, the return of a correctly issued invoice will incur a cost of 50 . No payment will be made for travel or accommodation expenses for any degree program that includes study outside our Madrid centers under its curriculum, unless such studies form part of the degree program. In the event of any discrepancy between the information provided by a UEM Admissions Advisor and the Standards for Undergraduate, Graduate and Advanced Career and Technical Education Programs and these Standards regarding the admission of International Students, the content of the latter shall prevail.

BEFORE COMING TO SPAIN

The Student Visa

International students (except for those enrolled for the online study option that do not need to come to Spain) that are not residents or nationals of EU countries, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein must obtain a visa for a period equal to the duration of the program they would like to study, under the following guidelines: For study periods of not more than six months, a 180-day visa must be applied for. For study periods that exceed 6 months, you will need to apply for a visa for the total time required to undertake your chosen program. If the visa (for periods exceeding 6 months) is issued by the Embassy / Consulate it will be for 90 days and can be extended for the full period you need for the program once you have arrived in Spain as explained in the next section about the NIE. You must remember that the application for a 180-day visa does not permit renewal of that visa in Spain. It is necessary to apply for a new visa if you would like to extend your stay. To do this, the International Student must go to a Spanish Embassy or Consulate abroad, either in your own country of origin or in another country.

34

The application for the visa must be carried out by the student in person at the co-

rresponding Spanish Embassy or Consulate. To find out the locations of the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in your country, visit the following website: www.maec.es which is the page for the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. The Embassy or Consulate themselves will advise the documentation required for the visa to be properly processed. To help you, we set out below a list of the points and documentation you will be required to have with you that are usually requested during the procedures for issuing the visa: - Passport valid for a minimum of 6 months ahead (must be provided by the student). - Proof of sufficient economic means (must be provided by the student). - Admissions letter from the educational center (provided by UEM)*. - Criminal record certificate (must be provided by the student). - Private medical insurance including repatriation costs. (Must be provided by and paid for by the student). (UEM can suggest a possible insurance policy)**. Although the approximate period for the visa to be issued can vary between 4 and 6 weeks, we recommend you start the process relating to your visa at least two months before the start of the program so that you are able to start your classes on time. The cost of this medical insurance will be borne by the student. Below is a link to taking out the policy with the company AON Seguros, however, if you prefer it, you can take out an insurance policy with another company: www.aonstudentinsurance.com
(LEGAL NOTICE: UEM would like to advise its students that the company AON Risk Solutions AON Affinity is offering the option of taking out a private medical insurance. The student will contract the policy directly with the company AON Risk Solutions AON Affinity, and the University will not be liable for any claims that may arise as a result of the said insurance contract between the student and the said insurance company).

*ADMISSIONS LETTER FROM THE ACADEMIC CENTER. So that the student is able to apply for their visa, once the student has paid the amounts indicated in section C) STUDY PLACE RESERVATION and ENROLLMENT, UEM will provide the student with an Admissions Letter for the program they have chosen to study that specifies its name, its start and finish dates, the number of hours and any other specific characteristics of the program.

**PRIVATE MEDICAL INSURANCE. A medical insurance is compulsory for every student that requires a visa to study in Spain (in other words, those students that are not residents or nationals of EU countries, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein).

35

For those programs that involve a study period in a country outside Spain or Europe, the student must consult with their Insurance Company to see if a new medical insurance is required to cover such study periods abroad. This insurance can be taken out by any student that is a candidate for any of the programs offered by UEM or the European Career College of Madrid. In the case of students that are nationals of any EU Member State, we recommend you apply for the European Health Insurance Card in your country of origin. The University is available at all times to assist any International Student during the process for obtaining visas.

ONCE YOU ARE IN SPAIN The Student ID Card - NIE.

Once you are in Spain, International Students that have a visa must apply for their NIE, the Foreigners ID Number, that represents a residency permit for all students that hold 90-day visas and that need to extend their legal stay in Spain. The student card will replace the student visa that is issued in their country of origin and allows the student to travel between the member countries of the Schengen agreement without the need for a visa. It also provides a legal basis to their stay in Spain. The card must be applied for within a period of one month from entry into Spain and before their visa expires. This card will assign the Foreigners ID Number or NIE. While you are waiting for the card to be issued, we recommend you do not leave the country so as to avoid problems on your return. To request your ID Card, go to: International students in Madrid: Brigada Provincial de Extranjeros [Provincial Bureau for Immigration]. C/ Avda. de los Poblados s/n (28024 Madrid) Metro station: ALUCHE. TEL.: +34 913228567; TEL.: +34 913228568; FAX: +34 913228529 International students in Valencia: International student that are not residents or nationals of EU countries should go to: Comisaria de Polica de Patraix [Patraix Police Department]. C/ Dels Gremis, 6, 46014, Valencia. International student that are residents or nationals of EU countries should go to: Comisaria de Polica de Bailn [Bailn Police Department]. C/ Bailn, 9, 46007, Valencia.

36

When going to these offices, you must take your original passport and visa and ask for an appointment to continue with the process that includes taking fingerprints and the payment of the legally established taxes. You will be given an appointment there and then and will be told which documents you will need to submit. For your information, the following documents are usually requested that accredit: Compliance with all the requirements for entry into and residency in Spain, including the visa, specifically issued to undertake or continue studies at any officially recognized public or private center. (Passport and Visa) Admission in accordance with regulations to any officially recognized public or private Spanish teaching or scientific center, with the aim of studying or extending your studies, or for undertaking non-remunerated research or training tasks, including a schedule that involves attendance and with an expected duration of a minimum of three months, and the approved curriculum, research or training schedule. (Admissions Letter) A guarantee of the economic means necessary to meet the cost of the studies, as well as the costs of residence and return travel to your country for you and, as applicable, your family.

37

Guaranteed healthcare with unlimited domestic cover for the student (Medical Insurance) Apart from these documents, others that are usually requested include: - Certificado de empadronamiento [Municipal Registration Document]. - 2 photographs. The validity of the authorization for the period of residency may be limited to the duration of the studies, research or training. If the duration is longer than twelve months, the card will be renewed on an annual basis. In any event, to renew the residency authorization for studies, the student will have to submit a certificate issued by the center at which they are studying that accredits that the student has complied with the requirements to continue with the same. In the case of researchers, the student must submit a report regarding the positive development of the research work.
