8efore you set out to coach someone! itCs important to prepare yourself. There are three things that you can do in advance to make a huge difference in the %uality of the coaching e#perience! hether youCre coaching yourself or another person. They areG Set a Lcoaching intentC Ao %uiet inside +ccept yourself and trust

Set a 4coaching intent5 ,obert >ilts "a leading developer of NLP$ studied e#cellent LhealersC in many alks of life "doctors! therapists! coaches! medicine men etc$. Ne found that hile they had many different approaches! there as something all these great healers shared in commonG they all had a Lhealing intentC. + healing intent is the intention and desire that hatever they are doing be for the healing of the person involved. /hen it comes to coaching! and using NLP Coaching Language! it is important to have hat 3 call a Lcoaching intentC 6 the intention and desire that hatever you do has the effect of helping the person to move for ard in their life in a ay that is positive and appropriate for them. 3f you use NLP Coaching language ithout a coaching intent! people can LfeelC it! and sometimes react defensively or &ust Lshut do nC. 7our beliefs about yourself and the orld have a massive effect on ho you respond. 7our beliefs about your client ill be communicated to them in everything you say and do. 3f you believe that your client onCt go into a trance! then they onCt. 3f you believe that theyCre an e#cellent hypnotic sub&ect! then theyCre much more likely to be. 3f you have difficulty believing that your client can find the solutions to all their problems! and live an amaIing life! then &ust pretend. <ilton ;rickson used to say D7ou can pretend anything and master itE! so hile youCre at it! pretend that youCre an e#traordinarily fast learner! and have already begun to master NLP Coaching Language This idea of LpretendingC may seem a bit Llo 0techC! but it actually has a proven track record. 7ou see! your unconscious mind doesnCt distinguish bet een a real e#perience and a vividly imagined one. 3f you 'i'idly imagine that your client is capable of making changes! your unconscious ill start to communicate that belief to them. The logicians among you ill recognise that these statements ouldnCt pass a logic test! but the unconscious mind isnCt too stringent about logic. 3f the person accepts the statement as true "and they usually do$! then the unconscious ill act accordingly. The structure of these frame0setting statements is thisG Q means 7 + causes 8 So! ho do you ant to positively influence1 3t could be actual coaching clients! other clients! employees! friends! family etc. +s you take a fe moments to think about the situation! you can start to become a are of some ideas you could use. @ne of my favourites for almost any coaching situation is something like thisG D7ou learned to alk and talk! and you donCt even kno ho you did it. People like to be around people ho get into rapport ith them. NLP Coaching Language orks most effectively person or people you are communicating ith. /hy is it important1 People are social creatures! and e often need to ork ith other people to achieve hat e ant. This means that an ability to communicate influentially is one of the most valuable skills a person can have. arning! NLP Practitioners are no taught to build rapport before being taught the <eta0<odelF NLP Coaching language is so po erful and revealing that it can seem intrusive and even LbullyingC if not asked in an appropriate ay "remember! body language and voice tone make up a significant amount of hat you communicate to someone$. So 3 suggest that peopleG Bse a gentle! curious voice tone Bse softeners

Softeners are short phrases that you can put at the beginning of a %uestion that make it more gentle and palatable. -or instanceG "a7 <uestion /hat do you ant1 /hat stops you1 No do you kno 1 Softene# <uestion 3Cm ondering hat it is that you ant1 3Cm curious to kno hat stops you1 3Cd like to ask you ho you kno that1

@ne of my favourite NLP %ueries is DNo do you kno 1E /hile 3 love using it for information gathering! 3 as pleasantly surprised back in -ebruary hen someone on our NLP Practitioner training asked me DNo do you kno hen someone youCre orking ith has e#perienced a real change1E @ne of the things that those of you doing coaching or change ork of any sort may already have e#perienced is that clients often ant to please you. Sometimes! this means that they ill consciously report that some sort of internal change has taken place! even hen it hasnCt. 3 got fooled by this a fe times hen 3 first started doing change ork ith people! so over the years 3Cve developed a kind of Lspidey0senseC about hether people have really e#perienced a shift! or hether theyCre &ust trying to please me. /hen the Practitioner asked me DNo do you kno 1E! 3 had to go inside my o n e#perience ? make e#plicit some of the things 3Cm responding to that let me kno a change has taken place. So! some of the things that let me kno that someone 3Cm orking ith has made a change or a shift in a certain area areG Long%term change in circumstances This is the most reliable indicator of change. 3f you help someone to stop smoking! ? a year later they still arenCt smoking! thatCs an e#cellent sign that the change has taken place. 3f theyCre en&oying life as a non0smoker! thatCs even betterF "eality%base# testing 3f you do a phobia cure ith someone ho has a fear of dogs! go find a dogF 3f you think youCve sorted out their fear of heights! find a tall building. 3f they ere scared of talking to people! get them to go out ? speak ith strangers. /henever 3 do change ork ith people! 3 ant to find the most immediate ay to test my ork that 3 can. @ne of the great things about doing this is that if the change has orked! the test creates a strong convincer for the person. 3f it hasnCt orked! then you kno asap that thereCs more to do. (maginary testing Sometimes! it isnCt practical to go out during a session and conduct a test. 3f you do a phobia cure ith someone ho has a fear of flying! you may not ant to ait until they ne#t fly to find out if itCs orked. -ortunately! the nervous system processes a vividly imagined e#perience in a very similar ay to a LrealC e#perience. Aet them to vividly imagine the conte#t here they anted a change "DSee hat youCd see! hear hat youCd hear! ? feel hat youCd feel etc$! ? notice their non0verbal responses "skin colour! breathing rate! e#pression etc$. 3f you already kno ho to use hypnosis! you can intensify the e#perience by leading them into a trance first.

Co/ert +uestioning This is one of my favourites. 7ou can use an embedded %uestion ";g. D/ith some clients 3 ask LNas your unconscious mind really accepted this changeC! but ith you it seems clearE$ ? observe their unconscious response. 3f you are in rapport! their head ill nod or shake depending on their unconscious mindCs ans er to the embed LNas your unconscious mind really accepted this changeC. Sneaky! huhF Changes in other patterns / no/elty 3f the client reports sudden ? ma&or shifts in other areas of their life! or changes a habitual pattern during the session! this can be an indication of change.
