The ancient god HU was our original reference to a greater energy.

As we evolved our species were referred to as HU-man, by other species of man on the planet at that time. We kept the term of human, but we have forgotten its true meaning. HU-man meant god-man. (man with self awareness). we are still that. we are gods-in-training, half man - half god. (HU) We are still learning how to use our powers effectively, that is why we create what we think.. PS in Australia we refer to the god of weather (wind, surf etc) as Huey, you will often hear surfers still using this reference. Hu or hu may refer to: Hu (mythology), the deification of the first word, in the Egyptian mythology of the Ennead Huh (god), the deification of eternity in the Egyptian mythology of the Ogdoad Hu (surname), a Chinese family name represented by the character . Hu? Human Plans Failing as Gods Purpose Succeeds In Vetus Testamentum (Oct. 1962) Dr. E. C. B. Maclaurin stated: It should be repeated that there is no conclusive early evidence that the name was ever pronounced Yahweh but there is plenty of early evidence for H!, Yah, Yo-, Yau-, -yah and perhaps -yo. Dr. M. Reisel, in The Mysterious Name of Y.H.W.H., said that the vocalisation of the Tetragrammaton must originally have been YeH!H or YaH!H. Still, Canon D. D. THE MYSTICISM OF SOUND The Sufi Message of Hazrat Inayat Khan !Abstract Sound !Abstract sound is called sawt-e-sarmad by the Sufis; all space is filled with it. The vibrations of this sound are too fine to be either audible or visible to the material ears or eyes, since it is even difficult for the eyes to see the form and color of the ethereal vibrations on the external plane. !It was the sawt-e-sarmad, the sound of the abstract plane, which Muhammed heard in the cave of Ghar-e-Hira when he became lost in his divine ideal. The Qur'an refers to this sound in the words: 'Be! and all became'. !Moses heard this sound on Mount Sinai when in communion with God, and the same word was audible to Christ when absorbed in his heavenly Father in the wilderness. Shiva heard the same anahad nada during his samadhi in the cave of the Himalayas. The flute of Krishna is symbolic of the same sound. This sound is the source of all revelation to the Masters to whom it is revealed from within. It is because of this that they know and teach one and the same truth. !The Sufi knows of the past, present and future, and about all things in life, by being able to know the direction of sound. Every aspect of one's being in which sound manifests has a peculiar

This sound is the source of all revelation to the Masters to whom it is revealed from within. It is because of this that they know and teach one and the same truth. !The Sufi knows of the past, present and future, and about all things in life, by being able to know the direction of sound. Every aspect of one's being in which sound manifests has a peculiar effect upon life, for the activity of vibrations has a special effect in every direction. The knower of the mystery of sound knows the mystery of the whole universe. Whoever has followed the strains of this sound has forgotten all earthly distinctions and differences, and has reached that goal of truth in which all the blessed ones of God unite. !Space is within the body as well as around it; in other words, the body is in the space and the space is in the body. This being the case, the sound of the abstract is always going on within, around and about man. Man does not hear it as a rule, because his consciousness is entirely centered in his material existence. Man becomes so absorbed in his experiences in the external world through the medium of the physical body that space, with all its wonders of light and sound, appears to him blank. !This can be easily understood by studying the nature of color. There are many colors that are quite distinct by themselves; yet, when mixed with others of still brighter hue, they become altogether eclipsed. Even bright colors, when embroidered with gold, silver, diamonds or pearls, serve merely as a background to the dazzling embroidery. So it is with the abstract sound compared with the sounds of the external world. The limited volume of earthly sounds is so concrete that it dims the effect of the sound of the abstract to the sense of hearing, although in comparison to it the sounds of the earth are like that of a whistle to a drum. When the abstract sound is audible, all other sounds become indistinct to the mystic. !The sound of the abstract is called anahad in the Veda, meaning unlimited sound. The Sufis name it sarmad, which suggests the idea of intoxication. The word intoxication is here used to signify upliftment, the freedom of the soul from its earthly bondage. Those who are able to hear the sawt-e-sarmad and meditate on it are relieved from all worries, anxieties, sorrows, fears and diseases, and the soul is freed from captivity in the senses and in the physical body. The soul of the listener becomes the all-pervading consciousness, and his spirit becomes the battery which keeps the whole universe in motion. !Some train themselves to hear the sawt-e-sarmad in the solitude, on the sea shore, on the river bank and in the hills and dales; others attain it while sitting in the caves of the mountains, or when wandering constantly through forests and deserts, keeping themselves in the wilderness apart from the haunts of men. Yogis and ascetics blow sing - a horn, or shanka - a shell, which awakens in them this inner tone. Dervishes play nai or alghoza - a double flute - for the same purpose. The bells and gongs in the churches and temples are meant to suggest to the thinker the same sacred sound, and thus lead him towards the inner life. !This sound develops through ten different aspects because of its manifestation through ten different tubes of the body. It sounds like thunder, the roaring of the sea, the jingling of bells, running water, the buzzing of bees, the twittering of sparrows, the vina, the whistle, the sound of shanka - until it finally becomes Hu, the most sacred of

It sounds like thunder, the roaring of the sea, the jingling of bells, running water, the buzzing of bees, the twittering of sparrows, the vina, the whistle, the sound of shanka - until it finally becomes Hu, the most sacred of all sounds. !This sound Hu is the beginning and end of all sounds, be they from man, bird, beast, or thing. A minute study will prove this fact, which can be realized by listening to the sound of the steam engine or of a mill, while the echo of bells or gongs gives a typical illustration of the sound Hu. !The Supreme Being has been called by various names in different languages, but the mystics have known him as Hu, the natural name, not manmade, the only name of the nameless which all nature constantly proclaims. !The sound Hu is most sacred; the mystics of all ages called it Ismi-Azam, the name of the most High, for it is the origin and end of every sound as well as the background of each word. The word Hu is the spirit of all sounds and of all words, and is hidden under them all, as the spirit in the body. It does not belong to any language, but no language can help belonging to it. !This alone is the true name of God, a name that no people and no religion can claim as their own. This word is not only uttered by human beings, but is repeated by animals and birds. All things and beings exclaim this name of the Lord, for every activity of life expresses distinctly or indistinctly this very sound. This is the word mentioned in the Bible as existing before the light came into being: 'In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God'. !The mystery of Hu is revealed to the Sufi who journeys through the path of initiation.7 The more a Sufi listens to sawt-e-sarmad, the sound of the abstract, the more his consciousness becomes free from all the limitations of life. The soul floats above the physical and mental plane without any special effort on man's part, which shows its calm and peaceful state; a dreamy look comes into his eyes and his countenance becomes radiant; he experiences the unearthly joy and rapture of wajad or ecstasy. When ecstasy overwhelms him he is neither conscious of the physical existence nor of the mental. This is the heavenly wine to which all Sufi poets refer, which is totally unlike the momentary intoxications of this mortal plane. !A heavenly bliss then springs in the heart of a Sufi, his mind is purified from sin, his body from all impurities, and a pathway is opened for him towards the

He begins to receive inspirations, intuitions, impressions and revelations without the least effort on his part. He is no longer dependent upon a book or a teacher, for divine wisdom - the light of his soul, the Holy Spirit - begins to shine upon him. !!!! 'I, by the light of soul, realize that the beauty of the heavens and the grandeur of the earth are the echo of Thy magic flute'. (Shefir) One of the common threads in the wisdom traditions of the world is the special place of the Divine Word in the creation theories. In this context, the sound archetype HU is particularly fascinating. It permeates the spiritual traditions of the Near-Eastern cultures. One can also find many examples of HU in the Indo-European languages. HU is one of the three primary sound archetypes of the Near-Eastern cultures along with YA and RA. For a general introduction to sound archetypes please see the Sound Archetypes [1]. HU in Tehuti We recognize HU in the name Tehuti who is also known as Thoth in English translations of ancient Egyptian texts. The English word thought is probably derived from Thoth. In Greek mythology Tehuti is known as Hermes, in Roman mythology as Mercury. There is extensive literature on Tehuti. Very few among those books and articles stress the root word HU in the name Tehuti. One exception is Gadalla [2] [3] who explains that HU represents the authoritative utterance and Tehuti represents the power of Divine Word. In ancient Egyptian cosmology, HU is complimented by Sia which represents the Cosmic Mind. In this sense Sia is very close to the Greek Logos. An interesting note in passing is that Sia contains the acoustic root IA (YA sound archetype [3]). In the ancient Egyptian cosmology HU and Sia were always mentioned together with Heka the ability to transform using the right words [2]. Heka was the basis of Egyptian magic. Sia-Hu-Heka is perhaps one of the earliest trinities formed in human religious thought. The three attributes HU, Sia and Heka may also be the origin of the title Trismegistus (three times great) given to Tehuti (Thoth, Hermes). In this connection, one is tempted to speculate that Te (Dje) is related to the Heka attribute and Ti to the Sia attribute.

In this connection, one is tempted to speculate that Te (Dje) is related to the Heka attribute and Ti to the Sia attribute. Meaning of Tehuti From the linguistic point view, there is another possibility. The m-/t- pronominal pattern is observed in the proto languages of the Indo-European and Uralic families. The m-/t- pronominal pattern refers to me I, te you. In these languages te and its variants refer to the secondperson you. In the IndoEuropean languages there is a pattern where suffixes are added to the verbal roots to express the first three persons. In Sanskrit, for example, bhara-mi I carry, bhara-si you carry, bhara-ti he carries. If HU is a verbal root, then ti is referring to the third person. If Tehuti is a ProtoIndo-European name then Tehu-ti means You-HU-He, you are HU, you are He. HU in the Divine Names We recognize HU in the names of God: AL-LA-HU (Allah) and YAHU-VA-HU (Jehovah, Yahweh). Just this recognition alone shows that Islam, Christianity and Judaism have common origins. It is also strongly suggestive that the roots of Islam, Christianity and Judaism are in Egypt. Much more can be said on the common origins but here we stress the significance of HU in all religions originating from Near-East. In Sanskrit VA is the acoustic root of Dharma. Shrii Shrii Anandamurti defines Dharma as The innate propensity of human beings is to move along the path towards subtlety in the psychic and spiritual spheres, and finally to merge into Parama Purusa. YA-HU-VA-HU is a fitting combination of sound archetypes to name the Supreme Being. Ahura Mazda, the name of the Supreme Being in Zoroastrianism contains all three sound archetypes we are examining: YA, HU and RA. The order in which these sounds are combined to form the word Ahura is important. In Avestan, the earlier language spoken in Persia, Ahura meant Divinity. In modern times Persians (Iranians) also use the word Huda to refer to God. The HU in Huda is clearly referring to the Divine Word. Hazrat Inayat Khan's Explanation In his book The Music of Life [5] Hazrat Inayat Khan explains many cosmic mysteries. This is an important book. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that I have made the same Linguistic observations regarding the usage of HU in languages as he does in the The Music of Life. I must have read this book without realizing the significance of what he was saying, then, later in life my subconscious must have reminded me of his original observations regarding HU. In addition to Linguistic observations Hazrat Inayat Khan provides an authoritative explanation of HU [5] The Supreme Being has been called by various names in different languages, but the mystics have known him as Hu, the natural name, not manmade, the only name of the Nameless, which all nature constantly proclaims. The sound of hu is most sacred. The mystics called it ism-e Azam, the name of the Most High, for it is the origin and the end of every sound as well as the background of each word. The word hu is the spirit of all sounds and of all words, and is hidden within them all, as the spirit is in the body. It does not belong to any language, but no language can help belonging to it. All things and beings proclaim this name of the Lord, for every activity of life expresses distinctly or indistinctly this very sound. This is the word mentioned in the Bible as existing before light came into being. HU in Qur'an In Qur'an, HU refers to the transcendent, ultimate reality. HU is repeated numerous times in Qur'an. Allah is the manifest divinity, the Supreme Being, the Creator. The names Allah, Alah, Elah existed for centuries before the birth of Islam. The name Allah as the name of the Supreme Being was well known among Arabic tribes. Scholars think that the etymology of Allah is Al-Lah, a combination of Al (El) meaning great in semitic languages (Hebrew, Arabic) and Lah meaning divine in Arabic. This is true but one needs to examine the etymology of the word Lah. The roots in Lah are LA and HU. It is much more revealing when Allah is spelled as AL-LA-HU. We should mention that LA is another acoustic root. LA is recognized in Sanskrit as the acoustic root of the solid factor (matter). The LA is signifying the manifest aspect of divinity. It is very likely that the word AL-LAHU originated in ancient Egypt given the fact that HU was associated with the creation of universe and it was characterized as authoritative utterance the divine word by the ancient Egyptians. The Qur'an is meant to be recited.

The Qur'an is meant to be recited. Silent reading of the Qur'an is not as effective. The word qur'an literally means recitation in classical Arabic. The recitation of Qur'an has hypnotic effect on Muslims. The translations of Qur'an do not create the same effect. Most western people find it difficult to understand when they read Qur'an from translations. There have been some attempts to institute Islamic prayers in the local language where Islam was practiced. These attempts have failed. Is it just the dogma of the religion and the conservatism of the people in Islamic lands that insists on prayers in classical Arabic, or is there a genuine spiritual effect created when the Qur'an is recited? It is a curious phenomenon worthy of a serious look. It is more curious when you consider the fact that Arabic speakers today have difficulty understanding the classical Arabic of Qur'an. The situation is similar to Latin and Sanskrit. The classical Arabic is no longer spoken. The point is that the recitation of Qur'an probably has the same effect on Turkish, Arabic, Iranian, Indian, Malaysian, Indonesian, Chinese or African Muslims even though they speak different languages. My intuition tells me that the spiritual effect is due to the repetition of the HU sound in Qur'an. HU in Human We recognize the root HU in Human. The root word man comes from Sanskrit mana meaning mind [5]. Humans are thinking beings. Humans have minds. HU is reflected in the unit mind (mana) to form a human being. Hu-mana expresses the essential quality of human beings which is the capacity of comprehension and contemplation. There are people names reminding us this connection. There are many examples in many languages. Few can be mentioned here: Ya-s-hu-a (Joshua) meaning God is salvation, Hu-dai meaning from God, Ba-hu meaning with God, Hu-lusi meaning pure and righteous. In passing we should mention that Jesus' Hebrew (real) name was Yashua (YA-s-HU-a). It is very interesting that his name contains both the YA and the HU sound archetypes. HU in Huma Bird Huma is the Phoenix. In Ancient Egypt the same bird was known as Benu.

It is very interesting that his name contains both the YA and the HU sound archetypes. HU in Huma Bird Huma is the Phoenix. In Ancient Egypt the same bird was known as Benu. AL-LA-HU-YA AL-LA-HU-YA is the original form of Alleluya (the English transliteration is sometimes written as Hallelujah). This is how Christians (especially Southern Baptists in USA) express their blissful feelings when they ideate on the Christ. AL-LA-HU-YA is a beautiful expression of joy not only because you feel a spiritual connection to the Supreme Being but also because it shows the common origins of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. When you sing AL-LA-HU-YA, you are expressing the unity of the Creator; you are giving a testimony to the unity of religions. If only the fanatics of those religions could realize this unity. Chanting HU Chanting HU stimulates the heart chakra. When you sound HU and let the sound resonate in the chest cavity you can feel the effect. This is why HU is associated with Bhakti (devotional love). This is why Sufis pay special attention to HU and it is part of their Zikr (meditation/chanting). Divine Word In the beginning was Brahman, with whom was the Word. And the Word is Brahman. - Vedas. I am the Eternal...I am that which created the Word...I am the Word. - Egyptian Book of the Coming Forth by Light. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. - Gospel according to St John. The Divine Word is HU. The scriptures of the East and West are referring to HU when they mention the Divine Word. Hazrat Inayat Khan also describes it as the abstract sound or the sound of the abstract plane and provides this inspiring information: It was the saut-e sarmad, the sound of the abstract plane that Muhammad heard in the cave of Ghar-e Hira when he became lost in his divine ideal. The Qur'an refers to this sound in the words be! And all became. Moses heard this very sound on Mount Sinai, when in communion with God; and the same word was audible to Christ when absorbed in his heavenly Father in the wilderness. Shiva heard the same anahata nada during his samadhi in a cave of the Himalayas. The flute of Krishna is symbolic of the same sound. This sound is the source

This sound is the source of all revelation to the masters, to whom it is revealed from within. It is because of this that they know and teach one and the same truth. [5]. Rumi's poetry nicely complements the inspiring thoughts of Hazrat Inayat Khan: When one is united to the core of another, to speak of that is to breathe the name HU, empty of self, filled with love. -Rumi. Summary HU is the vibrational expression of Cosmic Consciousness. Principles of Hu (Speech:Hu the spiritual Word of God: 1st logos of speech) Word origin: God - Our word god goes back via Germanic to IndoEuropean, in which a corresponding ancestor form meant invoked one. The words only surviving nonGermanic relative is Sanskrit hu, invoke the gods, a form which appears in the Rig Veda, most ancient of Hindu scriptures: puruhutas, much invoked, epithet of the rain-and-thunder god Indra. The Lost Word #########In the heavens the Celestial Sphinx is caught in the act of Creation. As he becomes a living God he gently expels his rst breath Hhhhhhooooooo. As the rst Word of God is pronounced it sounds like the harmonics of a cosmic breeze.

The Lost Word #########In the heavens the Celestial Sphinx is caught in the act of Creation. As he becomes a living God he gently expels his rst breath Hhhhhhooooooo. As the rst Word of God is pronounced it sounds like the harmonics of a cosmic breeze.

As a second breath is expelled Hhhhhhooooooo the sounds and name of the Ancient Egyptian god Hu Hu, meaning "Authoritative Utterance: Word of God: Word of Creation", is revealed.

"h"!!! "h"!!! Hu A "hawk on a standard" is an ancient Egyptian hieroglyph for "God". The phonics of the hieroglyphs sound out the pronunciation of the pictogram of the God Hu. Technically he is called Hu Hu as it is a double utterance. #########As the Celestial Sphinx continues to expel his breath of life, Hhhhhhooooooo, the heavens are progressively created. The Celestial Sphinx is the Creator and Architect of the Universe. The Celestial Sphinx is God and the ancient name for God was Hu. #########"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1 v 1,2) *!!! Clearly "Hhhhhhooooo" or "Hu" is the Word or utterance which means "God". The Lost Secrets #########The earthly representation of the Celestial Sphinx can still be seen today to the east of the Pyramids at Giza. The word "Sphinx" is of Ancient Greek origin meaning "an enigma" or "a riddle", because to the Ancient Greeks the purpose of the Sphinx was obscure, its meaning had been lost. #########To the remote Ancient Egyptians however the esoteric meaning and purpose of the Sphinx at the Giza Plateau was abundantly clear: as demonstrated by their name for the Sphinx Hu. #########Imagine the scene at the Dawn of the Egyptian Civilization. A ceremony in which the Creation of the Universe is re-enacted is in progress. Night is falling. The image of the Giza Sphinx, Hu, sits waiting. There is absolute silence. Footnote subtle references to Freemasonry are intentional. Copyright Audrey Fletcher 1999 All rights reserved Adelaide, South Australia HU is one of the most universal and ancient of names for God at the highest positive and formless levels of pure Spirit. HU is the Heavenly Universal sound to be found in nearly every single Spiritual tradition. Thus because HU is known to every religious tradition it is truly suitable for everyone to use. The Elders and Shamans of Africa, India, Druids and Celtic Shaman of Great Britan, North and South America all know HU as part of their Sacred oral traditions and often HU is used in their most Esoteric initiations. The ancient Lemurians, Atlanteans, Eqyptians, Greeks and earliest Christains also knew the HU. HU was the chant used in Lemuria and Atlantis, upon Venus and other planetary worlds. HU is the major chant of every Golden Age. HU can be sung in a long sustained melodic tone----it is pronounced like the word, hue. To do this love song to God, simply sit in a comfortable position and sing HUuuuuuuuuuuu out loud for a few minutes until you feel a natural urge to cease chanting. Then quietly turn your attention to your third eye to the center of your skull --- between your ears so to speak---and "listen" to the inner sound current of God. It has been described as a "ringing radiance" which describes it well. This inner sound current is your connection always to God and is His inner Word or Voice also known as the Holy Spirit. You will in time hear different tones and sounds as you listen. Each denotes a specic realm, or dimensional plane in which you---as a Soul are traveling in consciousness. You may see inner colors too that correspond to each of these planes. The HU chant may be varied by prouncing and chanting the H then the U in separate long drawn out tones. Or as HOoooooo (sounds like who). Hu Mantra Meanings: Another simple mantra is Hu. The Su belief system holds Hu as the sound of god, the sound of divinity. Another modern belief system, Eckankar, also uses the Hu mantra extensively. (A side note: I've participated in some amazing Hu chants where more than a thousand participants were gathered. The power and pure vibration of a Hu chant of this magnitude is amazing, leaving a person feeling transformed and uplifted. If possible, experience it yourself.) THE EGYPTIAN GOD, HU BY CATHERINE C. HARRIS !

! The Egyptian god Hu was one of the minor gods in some respects, but he was one of the most important gods for those serious about Egyptian

deities. Hu is the power of the spoken word. He personies the authority of utterance. ! One legend has it that the creator and Sun God, Re (Ra), evolved from the primeval waters of Egypt. Once alive, Re created the air (Shu) and the moisture (Tefnut). Next, the earth god, Geb and the sky goddess, Nut were created. Mortal men and women were created from the tears of Re. Re then drew blood from his own penis and created the gods Hu and Sia. These two gods represented the creative power of the gods. ! Hu and Sia were partners. Sia was the personication of Divine Knowledge/Omniscience, the mind of the gods. Hu was the personication of Divine Utterance, the voice of authority. During Ancient times, Heka, the personication of Divine Power accompanied these two gods. Together, the three gods were very important to the rulers of Ancient Egypt. Along with the falcon-headed Sun God, they rode the Sunboat across the sky in order to create and sustain all life. ! The act of the Sunboat traveling across the sky signies that with each sunrise the world was created anew. Having traveled through the Underworld of night and making it past all the dangers therein, the Sunboat once again rises to conrm that life is created new each day. ! !

! ! Hu was particularly important because he was the epitome of the power and command of the ruler. Even after death, Hu was of the utmost importance to the Kings of Ancient Egypt. Hu acted as the Kings companion as the King entered the Afterlife. Through Hu, the King maintained his royal authority in the Afterlife. Hu allowed the King to cross the waters of his canal and acknowledged the Kings authority and supremacy. ! So far, we know Hu as the personication of Divine Utterance. However, some legends maintain that he was not just a part of creation, but that he was the creator. It is said that as Hu drew his rst breath, there was in that sound the essence of his name. Hence, we have the name Hu, which sounds remarkably like the sound of an expelling breath. ! With each breath Hu expelled, creation took place. The rst breath created the Soul of Osiris. His last creation was the Sun. So it is said that Hu is the Word of God, the rst and the last breaths, Hu Hu. ! The Ancient Egyptians recognized the Sphinx at the Giza Plateau as an image of Hu. The lion was a symbol of power and strength. Used as the body of the Sphinx, this was perfectly acceptable to the

Ancient Egyptians. The face of the Sphinx wore the distinctive Red Crown of the Creator and the Osiris Beard. These were hallmarks of the time. ! !

! ! Its been suggested that Ancient Egyptians would use the Sphinx in a ritual that reenacted the creation of the Universe. It was performed at dusk, as night was falling upon Egypt. This was considered the time before creation begun, when Hu (the Sphinx) sat silent. ! When the signal was given, the sound of the rst word of creation lled the air, as people made the sound they recognized as that breath, Hhhhoooooooo. ! This word, the Word of God, would be chanted all through the night symbolizing the night of progressive creating. The nal act of the ritual came at sunrise. As the sun rose out of the East, the last breath of Hu was recognized. ! Sri Harold Klemp, Spiritual Leader of Eckankar, notes, Hu is the ancient name of God, a love song to God. When Soul has heard this sound, Soul yearns to go home. ! Eckankar uses the singing of Hus name as a spiritual connection to the Heart of God. They sing the name Hu to draw closer to the Divine Being. For the people who follow this faith, the desires are reported to be love, freedom, wisdom, and truth. ! Eckankar teaches, A spiritual essence, the Light and Sound, connects everyone with the Heart of God. This Light and Sound is the ECK, or Holy Spirit. Direct Aspects of God opens the deep spiritual potential within each of us. The Light and Sound purify, uplift, and direct us on our journey to home. ! The Egyptian Book of the Dead, The Papyrus of Ani, mentions the ceremonies of Hu and Sa. One can only speculate as to the nature of such rituals and ceremonies. Could they be talking about the ancient ritual involving the Sphinx? !Hu may be considered a minor god in some ways, but its obvious that Hu was a not-so-minor god to most Ancient Egyptians. Awareness in and of itself is often the solution to any problem. You become aware, for example, that your ego has gotten hold of the steering wheel and it loosens its grip in the blazing light of that awareness. How do you become aware? Set an intention each morning: I intend to observe my ego this day. Do it deliberately for however many days it takes to form a spiritual habit of ego-watching. Who's doing the watching, you ask? It's that higher part of your self, your soul self to be precise. If observation alone does not pour the cooling waters of Spirit on your inflamed ego, here are a few other techniques you might consider trying: Silently chant a spiritually charged word such as Aum or HU. (HU is pronounced like the man's name only drawn out: HUUUUUUUU. It is an ancient name for God. In fact, you can chant the more familiar word, God, to yourself if you like.) Place an image in your mind's eye--a beautiful rose, someone you love deeply, or a spiritual master. Look at that image inwardly until you are back on smooth waters and the ego is no longer screaming for attention. To learn to use these techniques with ease, practice shifting your awareness from the mundane (outer life) to the sublime (inner life) several times each day

in non-stressful times until you can do it with ease under any circumstance. Chanting HU (pronounced "hue") aloud or to yourself can open your heart to God's love and transform your life. This daily practice can help you experience more love, joy and spiritual freedom. You can also try chanting this inwardly when faced with challenging situations. HU is a ancient name for God and is a very uplifting chant when singing it with a group of people. HU (hue)

Dear all. I have been experimenting with the "HU" chant the last week. I am always looking for new ways of self improvement, but the "HU" chant has probably been around for thousands of years. Many years ago I had one of the first Mindlab machines, which helped me to break out of a very stuck feeling I was in at the time and I upgraded to a Mindlab Orion. The mind machines guided you through Alpha, Theta & Delta, using flashing lights and sounds. Around 2000 I started using the Centerpointe program by Bill Harris. To start with I obtained really good effects and could see really clear visual symbols, that were mind blowing. Each level of the Centerpointe program lasted between 6 to 12 months. Each level would have four cd's which you changed after a period of time. The Centerpointe program only worked on the auditory senses, by guiding you down through Beta, Alpha, Theta & Delta. Each CD and level had its power increased by sub-modulating the frequency. I used the program up until about the 4th Level, but I had some really nasty side effects, on this level. A bad stomach, excessive hair loss and tension in my head. I tried just using the program every other day and I still got the side effects. In the end I had to throw away the CD's and the side effects went away. I would warn people to be very careful before using the Centerpointe program, in fact I would advise against using it, after what happened to me. Since that time I have been very reluctant to use Mind machines or bin-aural beats, but came across the "HU" chant and its benefits. I have a Bio feedback machine, so I decided to check myself before doing a 20 minute session and after. What I have found is that my heart coherence and heart rate are improving considerably. I am only in my first week of this, so I will be checking my progress over the next month and reporting back. The day before yesterday, I had a real tingling sensation in the ends of my fingers and big toe after I had done a 20 minute session, which is a really good sign. I am also experiencing a tingling sensation in my right ear drum, when I am chanting. I am doing two 20 minute sessions twice a day. Once in the morning and afternoon. It is a case of finding a room where you won't disturb anybody else. Sitting comfortably on a cushion on the floor or a chair. Pronunciation of the "HU" chant. Take in a deep breath and then say "HU" out-loud, which sounds very much like "You", but with an H in front. This will then start to resonate in a tone, the longer you go on withthe "HU". Take another deep breathand then say "HU" out loud again and carry on repeating for 20 minutes. To start with you may not achieve 20 minutes. Use an alarm of some sort, so that you can focus on doing the chanting, rather than checking the time. You may want to visualise a "HU" in your mind, at the same time as you are doing the chant. I would be interested to hear from anybody else who uses the "HU" chant and what benefits you are getting from it! I also recommend using Marcey Hamms' recordings, which you will find on her web site. Marcey was the person who recommended that I used the "HU" chant. Marcey's recordings are just musical recordings, with no special tones and there have been lots of reports, that people were healed using these recordings and of other positive side effects. Until next time, think positive. For those who can hear, every vibration has melody and rhythm set in time, but is it possible to manifest noise (vibration) and silence (absence of any vibration) in the same split moment? Assuming Albert Pike is correct: "Everything actual must also first have been possible, before having actual existence." Nature reveals that where the river is deepest, it makes the least sound, and still the noise the water created running through the creeks is embedded in the depth of the waters. The sound of HU is the quiet, deep river. Like Pythagoras said: "It is better to be silent, or to say things of more value than silence." And that is how the melody and rhythm of HU emanates the silence of the heart with vibrations of the divine. Hu Mantra Meanings: Another simple mantra is Hu. The Sufi belief system holds Hu as the sound of god, the sound of divinity. Another modern belief system, Eckankar, also uses the Hu mantra extensively. Planetary Healing Sounds by Jonathan Goldman The following article contains information about three short and powerful mantrassacred sounds that may effectively be used individually or in groups for transformation: OM, AH and HU. These mantras are particularly useful sounds for projecting specific intentions. Please note that it does not seem to matter what pitch, frequency or keynote the mantra is chanted with regard to the effect of the mantra. The intention of the chanter, however, does seem to affect the power of the mantra and can amplify the energy even more. For this reason, you may find the article on Intention of interest. Mantras Mantras are words of power. The word mantra is Sanskrit and may be translated as the thoughts that liberate from samsara (the world of illusions). Mantras are listened to or recited by a practitioner for many different purposes; as a means of achieving different states of consciousness, to create resonance with specific attributes of divine energy, and to manifest different qualities, from resonating the chakras to embodying compassion. Mantras are found in all the different sacred traditions including Judaism and Christianitythe Hail Mary or Amen in the Christian Tradition or the Shema or Shalom in the Hebrew tradition are the equivalent of mantras, as is any repetition of prayer, chant or sacred sound. The prayers, chants and sacred sounds of the Native American tradition or the Islamic tradition may also be considered mantras. In fact, there is virtually no spiritual tradition, including

indigenous peoples, in which the recitation of sacred sound as mantra does not occur. While there are many mantras that are quite long and complex, many people are often looking for short mantras that may be easily sounded when people meet together in a group. Within the context of mantra, the most famous of these mantras the mantra that is considered the first of all mantras is the OM. For this reason, the Om is an excellent mantra to work with. In this writing, we will examine several such short mantras which may be used effectively. On OM Of all the sacred sounds on this planet, the one that is most often chanted is the OM. Undoubtedly, at any given moment, there is someone, somewhere chanting this sacred mantra. The OM is considered one of the oldest vocal sounds in existencemany speculate that it has been chanted for untold thousands of years. It is considered to be the original, primordial soundthe mantra of creation. OM is a mantra from the Hindu tradition. OM is a Sanskrit word, which is said to be the original primordial creative sound from which the universe and all of creation first manifested. While pronounced OM, certain Sanskrit scholars state that it is written as AUM. Many consider the two words to be interchangeable because of this. OM is said to be the sound that contains all sounds--it is the totality of all other sounds. Swami Sivananda Radha says, The cosmic sound AUM, or its condensed form, OM, is the origin of all other sound. OM is everything. It is the name of God. OM is a multi-dimensional sound, and as such, may be understood a number of different ways. One understanding is that OM (or its written form AUM) represents attributes of the major trinity of Hindu gods; Brahman, Vishnu and Shiva. The sounding of the A represents the energy of Brahman, the creator and the creational process. The middle portion of the sound, the U represents the energy of Vishnu, the preserver and relates to the maintenance and preservation of what has been created. The final M represents the energy of Shiva, the transformer and relates to the vital transformational energy to shift and change that which has been created and preserved. Another understanding of the OM (or AUM) is that the A represents the physical plane, the U the mental and astral planes and the M, all that is beyond the reach of the intellect. AUM or OM is the initial syllable, which begins almost all mantras. Thus OM represents the Infinite, the One Mind, the all embracing consciousnessthat which is the very essence of existence. In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the OM (AUM) represents different aspects of the trinity of the Body, Speech and Mind of the Buddha, or an enlightened being. The A represents the Body, the U represents Speech, and the M represents the Mind. Sounding the AUM in this manner puts one in resonance with these qualities of consciousness. The OM is a Bija (or seed) mantra and may be utilized to resonate the third eye. However, it may also be chanted as a 3 syllable word AUM (and pronounced as AH OH - MMM) to resonate the heart, the throat and the crown chakras. In fact, the OM can, through our intent, become a multi-purpose mantra with capabilities of resonating and aligning all the chakrasof cleansing imbalanced energies and purifying self. Sung with sincerity and devotion, vocalization of the OM can put the chanter in touch with the source of all creation, providing a bridge between the spiritual and physical dimensions and opening the way for inspirational contact with higher realms and beings. Many people ask if there is indeed a correct pronunciation for the OM. Is it OM or AUM or something else? In reality, there does not seem to be a correct pronunciation. Depending upon the country, language and dialect, the OM can be pronounced AUM, UM, UNG, ANG, ONG and so on. Yet, the resonance and effects of this mantra seem to be very similar despite varied differences in pronunciation. Much depends upon the intention of the person creating the soundwhere do they wish the OM to resonatewhich chakra and for what purpose. . OM as a sound symbolizes the supreme source. To many, the sound of OM is synonymous with the energy of peace. OM may be found as the root of many sacred words of different languages including our western Amen and the Hebrew Shalom, which has many meanings including peace. The OM initiates peace and tranquility when it is listened to, and particularly when it is chanted. On AH One of the most powerful mantras on this planet is the sound AH. This is an extremely powerful sound--particularly useful for generating compassion. I know you will agree that compassion is truly a key to transformation of consciousness on this planet. The "AH" sound is a sacred seed syllablea sacred mantras in many Eastern traditions including Tibetan Buddhism. It is also a vowel sounda divinely inspired sound that is considered sacred in many different traditions including Hebrew Kabbalah. The AH sound is found in most of the God and Goddess names on the planet (Tara, Buddha, Krishna, Yah, Yeheshua, Saraswati, Wakantanka, Quan Yin, etc.), as well as many of the sacred words (Amen, Alleluia, Aum). As a seed syllable, the AH is universal and may be utilized differently in different traditions, depending upon its purpose. In the Tibetan tradition, the AH is as a sacred mantra. In Western mystical traditions, it is a vowel sound Most mystical traditions worldwide that work is the vowels sounds in relationship to the chakras find that the AH sound the sound of the heart chakra. This chakra, which is located in the center of the chest is the energy center associated with love and compassion. Indeed, when many people think about the energy of love, they express it as an AH sound. Many spiritual masters believe that the activation of this chakra is most helpful for achieving higher consciousness and enlightenment. Most agree that the energy of love and the heart is the primary, essential energy of the universe. Many people believe that the AH sound is the primary sound that is created when we are bornthe sound being birthed on the inhalation of the first breath. The AH sound is also the last sound we make, riding on the energy of our final exhalation. In Tibetan Buddhism, there is a co-meditation technique which uses the AH sound. Chanting AH together (or even simply by just breathing together) allows people to attune and resonate with each other. It seems that the heart beat, respiration and brain waves of two people will entrain with each other through breathing or sounding AH together. This use of the AH sound may be particularly effective for those involved in hospice work. In this situation, the AH sound may once again be used as a sound of the heart chakra. I often recommend the AH as a sound for people who want to work with short mantras in groups. The reason for this is that as has been discussed, AH is an extremely transformative sound. Yet, most people know of it only as a vowel sound, and thus it defies association with any spiritual denomination or description as a mantra. While other sounds such as OM might be rejected by certain audiences because they are recognized as Eastern mantras or coming from another spiritual traditions, the sounding of an AH is acceptable by everyone regardless of their background, culture or religion. Here is an easy exercise with regard to working with the AH sound to generate the energy of compassion. All you do is have people sound an "AH" while they are generating the energy of compassion. Start first with yourself, then with someone you love, then with someone you have neutral energy with and finally with someone you have difficulty with. It is this last that provides the greatest opportunity for spiritual growth, since it's easy to send love to someone you love and real hard to do it to someone you don't. On HU Just as many traditions believe that the OM is the original creative sound, there are traditions that believe that this energy may be attributed to another soundthe HU. In the Shabd Yoga traditions, including Master Path and Eckankar and in the mystical Islamic path of Sufi, the HU is considered to be the highest vibratory mantra that can be sounded. Chanting the HU is said to lead one to transcendenceto God realization and enlightenment. HU is believed to be the universal name of God, which is present in every existing language. The HU sound has been described as many things from the buzzing of bees to the rushing of wind to the flute of God. It is said to be present in the words we speak, in the sounds of animals; that it is the wind in the trees, the rushing of waters, the roaring of water falls, the beat of the sea against a beachthat it is everywhere, in every plane. Like the AH and the OM, the HU may be perceived of as a seed syllable. Depending upon its pronunciation, it may also be perceived of as a vowel soundthe U. The HU creates extraordinary energy for balance and clearing. Many believe it activates both the heart and the crown chakras. When sounded together in a large group, it is extremely powerful and transformative. Different spiritual paths seem to have very different ways of pronouncing the HU, the sacred name of God. Certain spiritual paths from the Shabd Yoga traditions will chant it as one would the word you. Other spiritual variants of Shabd Yoga, will chant it as the word who which is said to be good for clearing

the crown chakra. In the Sufi Tradition, there is even a way of chanting the HU, doing it with lips barely touching and being the primary vibrator, so that this HU sound almost sounds like a motorboat or a buzzing insect. The Sufis perceive this HU is good for resonance of the throat chakra. Different groups may insist that their pronunciation of HU is the only correct pronunciation. However, regardless of the way it is chanted, continued, elongated sounding of HU, particularly with specific intention and visualization, will lead the reciter into an elevated state of consciousness. Conclusion OM, AH and HU are just a few of the one syllable mantras from different traditionsthere are many others. These three have been described because of their recognition and power. Interestingly, these one-syllable mantras combine quite easily. In fact, if one chants the OM or AUM as a three-syllable sound as suggested elsewhere AH OH MMyou have one combination which contains at least two of these sounds. When pronounced in the way, the OM or AUM should be sounded on one breath. Project the 3 syllables as three separate sounds so that the AH resonates the heart center, the OH resonates the throat center and the MM resonates the third eye and crown. This way of sounding the OM is extremely effective in a group for bringing the energy of the people together. The Tibetan Buddhist Chant of OM AH HUM also contains these sounds. The OM AH HUM, the Mantra of Blessing frequently precedes the recitation of other mantras. In this setting, when utilized as part of this mantra, the AH embodies the principle of creative sound and pure speech and is used to resonate the throat chakra (with the OM resonating the crown chakra and the HUM resonating the heart chakra). In conclusion, these three mantras of OM, AH and HUM are particularly effective for working with a group in order to create and then project sacred sound for use to assist in planetary healing soundusing sound to assist the creation of peace and harmony on the earth. As always, it should be stated that the intent of the chanter is of great importance. In the article on INTENTION is much information on understanding this and in particular, the formula Vocalization + Visualization = Manifestation. By themselves, these mantras have their own extraordinary divine resonance. But through skillful means, one can project intention upon these sounds, amplifying and making even more extraordinary the great healing gifts they can bring.

The HU in Secular Texts

from the Oxford English Dictionary The word "God" can be plausibly derived from the Sanskrit word "HU." Thanks to James Davis for pointing this out. "god (___). Also 3"4 godd. [Com. Teut.: OE. god (masc. in sing.; pl. godu, godo neut., godas masc.) corresponds to OFris., OS., Du. god masc., OHG. got, cot (MHG. got, mod.Ger. gott) masc., ON. go#, gu# neut. and masc., pl. go#, gu# neut. (later Icel. pl. gu#ir masc.; Sw., Da. gud), Goth. gu$ (masc. in sing.; pl. gu$a, guda neut.). The Goth. and ON. words always follow the neuter declension, though when used in the Christian sense they are syntactically masc. The OTeut. type is therefore *gu_om neut., the adoption of the masculine concord being presumably due to the Christian use of the word. The neuter n., in its original heathen use, would answer rather to L. numen than to L. deus. Another approximate equivalent of deus in OTeut. was *ansu-z (Goth. in latinized pl. form anses, ON. oss, OE. s- in personal names, sa genit. pl.); but this seems to have been applied only to the higher deities of the native pantheon, never to foreign gods; and it never came into Christian use. The ulterior etymology is disputed. Apart from the unlikely hypothesis of adoption from some foreign tongue, the OTeut. *gu#om implies as its pre-Teut. type either *ghudho-m or *ghut-m. The former does not appear to admit of explanation; but the latter would represent the neut. of the passive pple. of a root *gheu-. There are two Aryan roots of the required form (both *g"heu, with palatal aspirate): one meaning to invoke (Skr. hu), the other to pour, to offer sacrice (Skr. hu, Gr. _____, OE. _otan yete v.). Hence *g"hut-m has been variously interpreted as what is invoked (cf. Skr. puru-huta much-invoked, an epithet of Indra) and as what is worshipped by sacrice (cf. Skr. hut, which occurs in the sense sacriced to as well as in that of offered in sacrice). Either of these conjectures is fairly plausible, as they both yield a sense practically coincident with the most obvious denition deducible from the actual use of the word, an object of worship. Some scholars, accepting the derivation from the root *g"heu- to pour, have supposed the etymological sense to be molten image (= Gr. _____), but the assumed development of meaning seems very unlikely. From a desire to utter the name of God more deliberately than the short vowel naturally allows, the pronunciation is often (____) or even (____), and an affected form (___) is not uncommon: see gud. (For the variations in oaths see 10 and 11.) In Sc. the usual pron. is (___), but Gude (___), i.e. good a., is frequently substituted in such expressions as Gudesake, Gude keeps, etc.]"

(p. 153) "The Mysteries of HU revealed the other pole of human life: the ascent out of the body into the 'gloried' state of expansion of the consciousness in the spiritual world." (p. 153) "And HU could bring music to the consciousness of waking man and teach it to him, because he himself could hear in sleep the harmonies of the spheres, and his passage from waking to sleeping to waking was unbroken by any obliteration of consciousness. This was always the summit of initiation experience." (p. 165)

That which he creates has two aspects, the exterior world (phyi snod) and that contained within it (bcud), a division that corresponds to that between the Indian bhajana-loka and sattva-loka. The cosmology which is attached to this is surely very old, and is throughout constructed on a dualist basis. From the breath which streamed out of the creator there emerged two syllables HU HU, and progressively, the entire universe."

(p. 124) "HU or He was the seed or essence, the form of deity that like littel Gwion is transformed from least to greatest: HU, the unpronounced either with a light i-sound as he or heu'h, is the creative word, the seed of re, the rst sound." from The secret teachings of all ages: an encycklopedic outline of Masonic, Hermetic, Cabbalistic and Rosicrucian Symbolic Philosophy by Manly P. Hall "Their temples wherein the sacred re was preserved were generally situate on eminences and in dense groves of oak, because a circle was the emblem of the universe; oval, in allusion to the mundane egg, from which issued, according to the traditions of many nations, the universe, or, according to others our rst parents; serpentine, because a serpent was the symbol of HU, the Druidic Osiris; cruciform because a cross is an emblem of regeneration; or winged, to represent the motion of the divine spirit.*** Their chief deities were reducible to two - a male and a female, the great father and mother - HU and Cridwen, distinguished by the same characteristics as belong to Osiris and Isis, Bacchus and Ceres, or any other supreme goddess representing the two principles of all Being." "Godfrey Higgins states that HU, the Mighty, regarded as the rst settler of Britain, came from a place which the Welsh Triads call the summer country, the present site of Constantinople. Albert Pike says that the Lost Word of Masonry is concealed in the name of the Druid god HU. The meager information extant concerning the secret initiations of the Druids indicates a decided similarity between their Mystery school and the schools of Greece and Egypt. HU, the sun God, was murdered and, after a number of ordeals and mystic rituals, was restored to life."

from The Secret Power of Music by David Tame ____________ In the beginning was Brahman, with whom was the Word. And the Word is Brahman. - Vedas In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. - Gospel according to St John. As the religions of East and West so strikingly agree: in the beginning was the Word. But exactly what was -- or, to use the present tense of the Vedic quotation, is -- the Word? The above scriptures describe it as being a part of God, or Brahman. Further, the quotation from the opening of the gospel of St John continues, pregnant with meaning: The same (the Word) was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. We have, in these famous, deeply mystical lines from St John, then, yet another example of the universal ancient belief that God, or a Divine Being, created the universe, and did so by means of a vibratory emanation. This sacred vibration is usually referred to in early Christian texts as the Word (this meaning of the term having been forgotten or overlooked by most Christians today). In Hinduism the divine vibration is, as we have seen, more usually referred to as OM. Nevertheless, the Word and the OM are one and the same thing. Moreover, a great variety of other terms stemming from the different cultures of ancient times also refer to this same universal, eternal phenomenon. Cosmic Sound, infused with the essence of Consciousness, has been known variously as AUM, AMN, AMEN, AMEEN, OMEN, OMON, I AM, HU, YAHUVAH, the Logos, the Lost Word, and by other names besides. (p. 205) ____________ In Persia the name of the fabulous huma bird is derived from the root, Hum, which is related to OM. And tradition has it that should the huma bird alight for a moment upon the head of any person, then it is a sign that the person is destined to become a 'king'. Incidentally, the root, HU, is a direct reference to the Word of God; and this is most interesting, for this same root is also a part of the Word human. In 'human', the man portion comes from the Sanskrit Mana, or 'mind of the ordinary man'. So the term 'human' is therefore an eternal reminder of the ancient doctrine: that God is even now in all men, and can be more fully realized by all. Even as Jesus was also the Christ, demonstrating the unication of the principles of earth and heaven as both the Son of Man and the Son of God, so are all men hu-man; God-man. (p. 215)

from The Sirius Connection by Murry Hope ____________ From the aforegoing, it may be seen that the leonine archetype assumed great signicance in all Egyptian thinking, from the cosmological to the everyday. Lion gods and spirits were therefore looked upon as the guardians of all places and property, and the heads were often carved to represent members of the family, priests, priestesses, or Pharaohs and their wives. The Greeks called these 'sphinxes'. One of the names of the Egyptian Sphinx was HU, 'the protector'; another was Hor-em-akhet or 'Horus of the Horizon'which immediately connects its erection with those enigmatical 'Sons (or Followers) of Horus' the Shemsu-Hor. Curiously enough, the name 'HU' also occurs in the Celtic myth of Hu Gadam, an Atlantean person from the sea who guided a band of settlers to the prehistoric shores of Wales. There is also an uncanny similarity of sound between the names Hu Gadam and the Tuatha de Danaans (pronounced Tuar-de-Danans), those strange fairy people with magical powers who, according to legend, landed on the shores of prehistoric Ireland. (p. 197)

from The Message of The Sphinx by Graham Hancock & Robert Bauval "When speaking of the Sphinx, the Ancient Egyptians frequently made use of the Harranian derivation Hwl, but they also knew it by many other names: HU, for example..." (p. 5)

from A Dictionary of Egyptian Gods and Goddesses by George Hart HU - The god who personies the authority of a word of command. Hu came into being from a drop of blood from the phallus of the sun-god Re. When, according to the theology of the Pyramid Age, the king becomes a lone star, his companion is Hu. The royal authority is maintained in the Afterlife by Hu acknowledging the king's supremacy and allowing the monarch to cross the waters of his canal. It is tempting to correlate Hu with the power of the tongue of Ptah in the Memphite creation legend, commanding the universeinto existence, at the instigation of Ptah's heart. (p. 97)

The HU in Other Su Sources

from The Whirling Dervishes : Being an account of the Su order known as the Mevlevis and its founder the poet and mystic Mevlana Jalalddin Rumi by Shems Friedlander "When the Sheik arrives at his post, he bows, sits on the post, and kisses the oor. All the turners sit, and their cloaks are put on them by those who did not turn in the fourth selam. They have returned to their tombs but in an altered state. The Sheik recites the Fathia, the rst sura of the Koran, and all the dervishes kiss the oor and rise. The Sheik then sounds a prayer to Mevlana and Shams Tabriz and begins the sound "HU". The dervishes join in sounding the "HU" which is all the names of God in one."

from The Music of Life by Hazrat Inayat Khan

The mystery of HU is revealed to the Su who journeys through the path of initiation. Truth, the knowledge of God, is called by a Su "haqq". If we divide the word "haqq" into two parts, its assonant sounds become "hu ek", HU signifying God or truth and EK in Hindustani meaning one. Both together express one God and one truth. "Haqiqat" in Arabic means the essential truth, "hakim" means master, and "hakim" means knower, all of which words express the essential characteristics of life. "Aluk" is the sacred word that the "vairagis", the adepts of India, use as their sacred chant. In the word "aluk" are expressed two words: "al" meaning "the," and "haqq", "truth," both words together expressing God the Source from which all comes. The sound HU becomes limited in the word "ham", for the letter "m" closes the lips. In Hindustani this word expresses limitation because ham means "I" or "we," both of which words signify ego. The word "hamsa" is the sacred word of the yogis which illumines the ego with the light of reality. The word "huma" in the Persian language stands for a fabulous bird. There is a belief that if the "huma" bird sits for a moment on someone's head it is a sign that he will become a king. Its true meaning is that when a person's thoughts so evolve that they break all limitation, then he becomes as a king. It is the limitation of language that it can only describe the Most High as something like a king. It is said in the old traditions that Zoroaster was born of a "huma" tree. This explains the words in the Bible, "Except a man be born of water and the spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." In the word "huma", "hu" represents spirit, and the word "mah" in Arabic means water. In English the word "human " explains two facts which are characteristic of humanity: "hu" means God and "man" means mind, which word comes from the Sanskrit "mana", mind being the ordinary person. The two words united represent the idea of the God-conscious person; in other words HU, God, is in all things and beings, but it is man by whom He is known. "Human " therefore may be said to mean God-conscious, God-realized, or God-man. The word "hamd" means praise, "hamid", praiseworthy, and "Muhammad", praiseful. The name of the Prophet of Islam was signicant of his attitude to God. "Hur" in Arabic means the beauties of heavens; its real meaning is the expression of heavenly beauty. "Zahur" in Arabic means manifestation, especially that of God in nature. "Ahura Mazda" is the name of God known to the Zoroastrians. The rst word, "Ahura", suggests HU, upon which the whole name is built. All of these examples signify the origin of God in the word HU and the life of God in every thing and being. "Hayy" in Arabic means everlasting, and "Hayat" means life, both of which words signify the everlasting nature of God. The word "huwal" suggests the idea of omnipresence, and "Huvva" is the origin of the name of Eve, which is symbolic of manifestation. As Adam is symbolic of life, they are named in Sanskrit "Purusha" and "Prakriti". Jehovah was originally "Yahuva", "ya" suggesting the word "oh" and "hu" but when sound rst takes shape on the external plane, it becomes "a". Therefore "alif" or "alpha" is considered to be the rst expression of HU, the original word. (pp. 27-29) The HU Page

The HU in Rumi's Poetry In su circles they say, "There's prayer, and a step up from that is meditation, and a step up from that is sohbet, or conversation." Who is talking to HU! (The pronoun for divine presence.) Lover to beloved, teacher to disciple. The Friendship of Rumi and Shams became a continuous conversation, in silence and words, presence talking to absence, existence to non-existence, periphery to center. Rumi's poetry may be heard as eavesdropping on that exchange." Coleman Barks, May 2, 1994 Say I am You - RUMI

Mathnawi, Book VI, 4038-4044 [Open Secret - Versions of Rumi by John Moyne and Coleman Barks] This is what the Friend can do when one is in such love. Sensual people use the holy names often, but they don't work for them. The miracle Jesus did by being the name of God, Zuleika felt in the name of Joseph. When one is united to the core of another, to speak of that is to breathe the name HU, empty of self and lled with love. As the saying goes, The pot drips what is in it. The saffron spice of connecting, laughter. The onion-smell of separation, crying. Others have many things and people they love. This is not the way of Friend and friend. ____________ [The Mathnawi of Jalalu'ddin Rumi by Reynold A. Nicholson] This, this (is what) the Beloved's name can do (when one is) in love. The vulgar are always pronouncing the Holy Name, (but) it does not do this work (for them) since they are not endowed with (true) love. That (miracle) which Jesus had wrought by (pronouncing) the Name of HU (God) was manifested to her through the name of him (Joseph). When the soul has been united with God, to speak of that (God) is (to speak of) this (soul), and to speak of this (soul) is (to speak of) that (god). She was empty of self and lled with love for her friend (Joseph), and (as the proverb says), "A pot drips what is in it." The scent of the saffron of union produces (happy) laughter; the smell of the onion of absence (produces) tears. Every (other) one has in his heart a hundred objects of desire, (but) this is not the way of love and fondness.

Mathnawi, Book I, 3445-3454 [RUMI - We Are Three by Coleman Barks] Recognize that you imagination and your thinking and your sense-perception are reed canes that children cut and pretend are horsies. The Knowing of mystic Lovers is different. The empirical, sensory, sciences are like a donkey loaded with books, or like the makeup woman's makeup. It washes off. But if you lift the baggage rightly, it will give you joy. Don't carry your knowledge-load for some selsh reason. Deny your desires and willfulness, and a real mount may appear under you.

Don't be satised with the name of HU, with just words about it. Experience That Drunkenness. From books and words come fantasy, and sometimes, from fantasy comes UNION. ____________ [The Mathnawi of Jalalu'ddin Rumi by Reynold A. Nicholson] Come, recognise that your imagination and reection and sense-perception and apprehension are like the reed-cane on which children ride. The sciences of the mystics bear them (aloft); the sciences of the sensual men are burdens to them. When knowledge strikes on the heart (is acquired through mystical experience), it becomes a helper; when knowledge strikes upon the body (is acquired through the sense), it becomes a burden. God hath said, "(Like an ass) laden with his books": burdensome is the knowledge that is not from Himself. The knowledge that is not immediately from Himself does not endure, (it is) like the tirewoman's paint. But when you carry this burden well, the burden will be removed and you will be given (spiritual) joy. Beware! Do not carry this burden of knowledge for the sake of selsh desire (but mortify yourself), so that you may ride on the smooth-paced steed of knowledge, So that you may mount the smooth-paced steed of knowledge, (and that) afterwards the burden may fall from your shoulder. How wilt thou be freed from selsh desires without the cup of HU (Him), O thou who hast become content with no more of HU than the name of HU? From attribute and name what comes of birth? Phantasy; and that phantasy shows the way to union with Him.

Mathnawi, Book IV, 2613-2622 [One-Handed Basket Weaving - RUMI by Coleman Barks] Muhammed is said to have said, "Whoever belongs to God, God belongs to." Our weak, uneven breathings, these dissolving personalities, were breathed out by the eternal Huuuuuuuu, that never changes! A drop of water constantly fears that it may evaporate into the air, or be absorbed by the ground. It doesn't want to be used up in those ways, but when it lets go and falls into the ocean it came from, it nds protection from the other deaths. Its droplet form is gone, but its watery essence has become vast and inviolable. Listen to me, friends, because you are a drop, and you can honor yourselves in this way. What could be luckier than to have the ocean come to court the drop? For God's sake, don't postpone your yes! Give up and become the giver. ____________ [The Mathnawi of Jalalu'ddin Rumi by Reynold A. Nicholson] Kana lillah is the giving of thy groat, in order that kana 'llah lahu may come into (thy) hand; For this weak unstable Hu (personality) was brought into being by the steadfast (permanent) HU of the Lord.

When the Hu that passes away has surrendered itself to Him, it becomes everlasting and never dies. ('Tis) like a drop of water (which is) afraid of wind (air) and earth; for by means of these twain it is made to pass away and perish. When it has leaped (thrown itself) into the sea, which was its source, it is delivered from the heat of the sun and from wind and earth. Its outward form has disappeared into the sea, but its essence is inviolate and permanent and goodly. Hark, O (thou who art like a) drop, give thyself up without repenting, that in recompense for the drop thou mayst gain the Ocean. Hark, O drop, bestow on thyself this honour, and in the hand of the Sea become safe from destruction. Whom indeed should fortune like this befall? A Sea has become the suitor for a drop. In God's name, in God's name, sell and buy at once! Give a drop, and take (in return) the Sea which is full of pearls.

Mathnawi V, 2887-2911 [Say I Am You RUMI by Coleman Barks] A man was wandering the marketplace at noon with a candle in his hand, totally ecstatic. "Hey," called a shopkeeper. "Is this a joke? Who are you looking for?" "Someone breathing Huuuuuu, the divine breath." "Well, there are plenty to choose from." "But I want one who can be in anger and desire and still a true human being in the same moment." "A rare thing! But maybe you're searching among the branches for what appears only in the roots." There's a river that turns these millstones. Human will is an illusion. Those that are proud of deciding things and carrying out decisions are the rawest of the raw! Watch the thoughtkettles boiling and then look down at the re. God said to Job, "You value your patience well. Consider now that I gave you that patience." Don't be absorbed with the waterwheel's motion. Turn your head and gaze at the river. You say, "But I'm looking there already." There are several signs in eyes that see all the way to the ocean. Bewilderment is one. Those who study foam and otsam near the edge have purposes, and they'll explain them at length! Those who look out to sea become the sea, and they can't speak about that. On the beach there's desire-singing and rage-ranting, the elaborate language-dance of personality, but in the waves and underneath there's no volition, no hypocrisy, just love forming and unfolding.

Divan-i Kebir Poem 147 (verse 1938) [Divan-i Kebir Meter 1 by Nevit O. Ergin] If you go to the garden of the Heart, You'll have beautiful perfume like a rose. If you y to the sky, Your face will turn into a moon like the angels. You'll turn into light Even if He burns you like oil. You'll become like hair because of grief, But they'll put you at the head of the table. Like a candle, you'll illuminate the assemblies. You'll become a Sultan. You'll become a supreme sovereignty, Heaven, and an angel at the door of heaven.

You'll become sky and faith. You'll turn into a lion And, at the same time, a gazelle. You'll leave place. You'll go to the land of Absence. You'll separate from yourself. You'll go alone, walking without riding, Without feet, like water in the river. You'll become One like Heart and Soul, You'll keep appearing even if you are invisible. You'll become bitter-sweet, like wine. You'll be free from the qualities Of wetness and dryness, like Jesus. You'll pierce the turbulence And make a road of it. You'll be free of dimensions; Every side will become one for you. You'll be free from desires And the fancy of your insides. You'll become empty. You'll stay alive without breath. You'll be plunged into the sea of Ya Hu, And then you'll quit saying, "Ya Hu." You'll turn sweet into bitter And hear all, from a distance. When you reach the ninth level of the sky, You won't be a curtain to the light. Be a Sultan with a kingdom. Reach the height. Become a moon. How long will you keep searching By saying, "Coo-coo," like the dove? You'll become a window for every house. You'll be a rose garden in every eld. If you leave your self, drop your existence, You'll become Me without me. Don't take the lead. Don't brag. Be joyful, bend your head, Like a branch of the peach tree. Smile. Be beautiful. You won't ask for light. You won't need your self. You'll look after The feeding and care of the poor, Like the Sultan. You'll look for darkness, like the moon. You won't look for Soul; You'll give Soul. You'll nd a remedy for every ill. Don't look for salve for your wounds. You'll be slave for all wounds.

#1826 [Like This " RUMI By Coleman Barks] If anyone asks you how the perfect satisfaction of all our sexual wanting will look, lift your face and say, Like this. When someone mentions the gracefulness of the nightsky, climb up on the roof and dance and say, Like this? If anyone wants to know what "spirit" is,

or what "God's fragrance" means, lean your head toward him or her. Keep your face there close. Like this. When someone quotes the old poetic image about clouds gradually uncovering the moon, slowly loosen knot by knot the strings of your robe. Like this? If anyone wonders how Jesus raised the dead, don't try to explain the miracle. Kiss me on the lips. Like this. Like this. When someone asks what it means to "die for love," point here. If someone asks how tall I am, frown and measure with your ngers the space between the creases on your forehead. This tall. The soul sometimes leaves the body, then returns. When someone doesn't believe that, walk back into my house. Like this. When lovers moan, they're telling our story. Like this. I am a sky where spirits live. Stare into this deepening blue, while the breeze says a secret. Like this. When someone asks what there is to do, light the candle in his hand. Like this. How did Joseph's scent come to Jacob? Huuuu. How did Jacob's sight return? Huuuuu. A little wind cleans the eyes. Like this. When Shams comes back from Tabriz, he'll put just his head around the edge of the door to surprise us. Like this.

[Love is a Stranger " RUMI by Kabir Helminski] What shall I do, O Muslims? I do not recognize myself. I am neither Christian nor Jew, nor Magian, nor Muslim. I am not of the East, nor the West, not of the land, nor the sea. I am not from nature's mine, nor from the circling stars. I am neither of earth nor water, neither of wind nor re. I am not of the empyrean, nor of the dust on this carpet. I am not of the deep, nor from behind. I am not of India or China, not of Bulgaria, nor Saqsin; I am not of the kingdom of Iraqain, nor of the land of Khorasan. I am not of this world nor the next,

not of heaven, nor of purgatory. My place is the placeless, my trace is the traceless. It is not the body nor is it the soul, for I belong to the soul of my love. I have put duality away and seen the two worlds as one. One I seek, One I know. One I see, One I call. He is the First, He is the Last. He is the outward, He is the Inward. I know of nothing but Hu, none but him. Intoxicated with the cup of love, two worlds slip from my hands. I am occupied with nothing but fun and carousing. If once in my life I pass a moment without You, I repent my life from that moment on. If once in this world I should win a moment with You, I will put both worlds under my feet and dance forever in joy. O Shams of Tabriz, I am so drunk in the world that except for revelry and intoxication I have no tale to tell.

from Be the HU ________________ Every moment of your life, you must be the HU. This is more than just chanting HU. This is being the HU. The Sound must always be in your atoms. It must be with you when you're driving, when you're at work, when you're at home eating a meal with your family. The HU and you must be one and the same. And if you make yourself more and more one with the HU, you will nd that life is a more joyful place. I've used many words to try to show you something. I can't give you truth in words. I can give you ideas; I can give you images. I leave this image with you: Live your life as if you are one with the HU, so that every moment of your life is a spiritual exercise. When you are talking to a stranger, when you are with your loved ones, you are a spiritual exercise. You are living and moving in the body of ECK. And as an atom in the body of ECK, there is a sound that comes from you. That sound is HU. This sound not only comes from you, but it is you. You must know that this body you have is just a shield, a barrier--a heavy, course shield, and a barrier which is trying to stop you from hearing and seeing your true identity as Soul. (p. 278)

from Soul Travelers of the Far Country ________________ This is the exercise I used in contemplation at bedtime. I sang the word HU to myself on the outgoing breath and held the note until drawing another breath. HU, a most holy name of God, was the ancient Lemurian's song of upliftment. It was their way to reach the ECK, the Holy Spirit. The Druids held that HU was the highest God, and to the Egyptians the name meant the God of Utterance"a corruption of its real meaning, however.
