Student
achieves
perfect
score
By HEATHER FIORE
The Sun
High School North junior
Christopher Shao recently re-
ceived a top score of 5 on the
AP Physics C: Mechanics Exam,
making him the first student at
HSN to ever receive a perfect
score on an AP exam.
Shao, one of only 15 students in
the world to earn every point pos-
sible on this AP exam, was among
the 23 students at HSN who took
the exam this year.
Shao even received a personal-
ized letter from Trevor Packer,
senior vice president of AP and
Instruction for The College
Board, the organization that ad-
ministers the AP test, saying he
should be very proud of this ex-
traordinary academic achieve-
ment, which reveals both a depth
and breadth of knowledge and
understanding of this founda-
tional college course.
In total, 42,885 students from
around the country took the AP

The West Windsor Arts Coun-
cil is asking for donations to its
annual fund. The Arts Council, a
private non-profit organization
that provides community arts
programming to the greater West
Windsor area, seeks donations to
reach its annual fund goal of
$20,000.
Its a giving season and a time
to be grateful, said Arin Black,
exeuctive director of West Wind-
sor Arts Council. As a small arts
non-profit, we cant exist without
support. Thats why were so
grateful for all those that donate.
Contributions to the Annual
Fund provide vital resources for
carrying out the West Windsor
Arts Councils mission to be an
incubator of community arts.
As a 3-year-old organization,
were at the most critical time,
Black said. Donating to the an-
nual fund helps us make a place
for the arts in our community.
Black points out that invest-
ment in the arts pays dividends.
From higher literacy, better
problem solving, stress relief and
a clear economic impact, invest-
ing in the arts rewards, she
said.
A contribution of $10 buys
paintbrushes for an art class; $60
provides two hours of mentor-
ship to a student intern, $100
brings an artist to Autumn Arts
Afternoon; $250 enables us to host
a film screening; $500 funds an art
exhibit opening; $1,000 makes our
Spring Awakening literary event
a reality; $1,500 provides financial
support to hire a professional
artist as a teacher; and $5,000 sup-
ports a live performance.
Black also noted that many
companies participate in a
matching-gift program for chari-
table gifts made by their employ-
ees.
Check with your employers
Human Resources Department to
see if your generosity will be
made even greater through a
match by your employer, she
said.
Information about the annual
fund can be found at westwindso-
rarts.org. Donations are tax-de-
ductible. To donate, go to west-
windsorartscenter.org/donations.

structional assistants, secre-
taries, bus drivers, bus mechan-
ics, bus aides, and cafeteria/play-
ground aides, according to a dis-
trict release. The three-year
agreement covers the period of
July 1, 2012, through June 30,

would add that the efforts of

dents, staff and parents.

Physics: Mechanics Exam this
year.
I didnt go into it thinking I
needed to get a perfect score; I just
wanted to see what I knew, Shao
said. I studied from the book and
made sure I knew a lot of ad-
vanced concepts, but a lot of my
preparation was through class
and the problems we do.
Michael Zapicchi, principal at
HSN, said Shao is an exceptional
student who took this exam with-
out even taking the school-ap-
proved course.
He only took our Honors
Physics class, and between what
he did in that class and the work
he did on his own, he wanted to
try to do this, he said. It is a re-
flection of the quality of instruc-
tion and instructors in our build-
ings.
Zapicchi said any student is
able to take any AP exam without
taking the course beforehand. He
said lots of students take AP
exams for courses HSN doesnt
offer, such as Japanese, psycholo-
gy and macroeconomics and mi-
croeconomics.
How many credits the stu-
dents receive are an individual
function of each college, he said.
It depends on what college or
university you go to. Some take
all credit and some dont.
Being only a junior, Shao isnt
sure which college or university
hed like to attend, but knows hed
like to focus on math or physics.
I like physics a lot, he said.
Shao is currently preparing to
take another AP exam, electricity
and magnetism, which will be ad-
ministered in May.
Im getting help from my
teachers, doing problems they tell
me to and looking through some
books, he said.
Zapicchi said many students at
HSN take AP exams each year,
with comparable numbers at
High School South.
While he credits the staff and
quality of education at HSN for
this accomplishment, Zapicchi
also said the students willing-
ness to take different courses to
prepare themselves for college is
a major factor.
This outstanding accomplish-
ment is likely a direct reflection
of the top quality education being
offered in West Windsor-Plains-
boro, Parker said.
We applaud Christopher for
his hours of hard work and also
his AP teacher, Peter Martin, for
the ability to engage students and
enable them to excel in a college-
level course.

H
ow many times have you seen
it: People driving around town
throwing caution to the wind,
as if they were on a NASCAR track?
Youd think someone was giving away
free hundred dollar bills.
Do they not know we have children
walking around town? Do they not
care about the safety of other mo-
torists? Do they not care about their
own safety?
Seems like today, everyone is in a
rush at all times; it seems like its get-
ting worse with each passing year.
Somehow, by some miracle, New Jer-
sey drivers arent the worst in the na-
tion, at least according to an annual
study recently released by CarInsur-
anceComparison.com. In fact, were
only the 32nd worst state-full of driv-
ers. If were only middle of the pack,
wed hate to be on the road in
Louisiana, whose drivers were collec-
tively ranked as the worst in the na-
tion.
Even though were not as bad as
some of our American brethren, its
worth repeating: Slow down out there!
Nothing can be of such importance
that you need to speed and drive errati-
cally...every time you drive! Its just not
possible that your wife is giving birth
for the fifth time this week.
Our children are walking our
streets. Our elderly are still behind the
wheel. And our ready, willing and able
are out on the roads, trying to get to or
from a New Years celebration.
Lets make sure everyone gets where
theyre going safely. Lets all share the
road with each other, and lets stop
being such maniacs even if were not
the worst.
in our opinion
Slow down out there
Use caution when driving on the roads, especially this time of year
Your thoughts
How bad is the driving out there? How can
we get better? Should more regulations
be put on New Jersey drivers to improve
safety? Let your thoughts be heard
through a letter to the editor.

Susan and Bruce Roeloffs opened
their Crown Trophy of Mercerville
store at 3257 Quakerbridge Road in
Mercerville in March of 2007. The
store is part of the Crown Trophy
franchise system and is family owned
and operated with Susan and son
Matt running the operation full-time
with occasional help from husband
Bruce. Terry Moon and Victoria Kier-
nan are two of their employees that
embody Susans passion for putting
the customer first.
We do everything possible to en-
sure the customer gets what they
want, when they want it, at a fair
price, noted Susan. If the customer
isnt happy, neither are we.
Proof of that came in 2008 and
2011 when Crown Trophy of Mer-
cerville won the prestigious Sales
Achievement Award from Crowns
Corporate Headquarters at their an-
nual summer meeting. Crown Tro-
phy Founder and President Chuck
Weisenfeld said, I love the Mer-
cerville store. Susan and her team are
doing an excellent job representing
Crown and have been active in the
community as well. I love that they
give back, many local businesses
dont do that anymore. I am glad to
have them be a part of the Crown
Franchise Family. They even com-
pleted our exhaustive Crown Trophy
training program and achieved the
Certified Recognition Advisor (CRA)
designation from us which not every
store can say.
Crown Trophy of Merceville has
also received awards from the Rob-
binsville Education Foundation and
received resolutions recognizing
their business from Senator Green-
stein and Assemblymen Benson and
DeAngelo. Crown Trophy of Mer-
cerville specializes not only in tro-
phies but also plaques, medals, rib-
bons, silkscreened and embroidered
apparel, signs and banners, promo-
tional products, corporate awards,
golf outing packages and much more.
One source of pride for Susan and
Matt is the Crown Trophy Student/Ath-
lete of the Month program which is
available to all area high schools as a
free service. With this program
schools can select one student and
one female and male athlete each
month to be recognized for their per-
formance in the classroom and in
their chosen sport.
Many schools have had to cut
back on their awards programs to
their students and athletes, so we felt
the need to pick up the ball and run
with it for them. It is a great way for
the schools to recognize their stu-
dents and we provide the service at
no cost to the schools. said Roeloffs.
Any area high school interested in the
Student/Athlete of the Month pro-
gram is urged to contact the store for
more information about the program.
When asked why Susan considers
her store the Best kept secret in Mer-
cerville she replied. The funny
thing about our business is that peo-
ple dont really look for us until they
need us. Dont let the name fool you
we do a lot more than just trophies
and strive to be your one-stop-shop
for your award and event needs.
Now the secret is out and Susan,
Matt and the entire team at Crown
Trophy of Mercerville hope to meet
many new customers (which usually
turn into friends) real soon.
Crown Trophy of Mercerville is lo-
cated in University Plaza, at 3257
Quakerbridge Road in Mercerville.
They are open Monday through
Friday 9:30am-5:30pm with evening
hours until 7:00pm on Thursdays and
Saturdays 9:00am-1:00pm. You can
reach the store by calling (609)838-

sance said. We had a rough start
with our first scrimmage against
Lawrence, but then we tied Acade-
my of New Church in Pennsylva-
nia, and we beat Notre Dames
half varsity-half JV, and weve
just been building on and on from
there.
WW-P South opened the regu-
lar season with an 8-0 win Dec. 9
against Steinert High School, be-
fore playing to a tie with Prince-
ton High School on Dec. 11 and
falling to Robbinsville High
School on Dec. 13.
I told these guys, You had a
good week last week, but this is
the week to see what were all
about, Lassance said on defeat-
ing the Spartans. That was a

Despite teams youth, coach
expects to be a confident team
good test against Steinert, theyve
had our number the last couple
years. Now we just have to keep
the ball rolling.
With only four seniors on the
roster, the Pirates are certainly
young, but that doesnt necessari-
ly mean inexperienced, as eight
players are travel or club players,
including seven underclassmen.
Junior forwards Brian Tso and
Jonathan Matthews are two un-
derclassmen who expect to be big
contributors this season.
Theyve taken a lot of big
steps and are only going to con-
tinue to improve as the season
goes on, Lassance said.
Senior goalie Andrew Holubec,
who also plays for the New Jersey
Titans, is a large reason why Las-
sance is optimistic about his
teams chances. In his first two
starts, Holubec made an astro-
nomical 86 saves. He had 34
against Steinert and made a huge
impact on the outcome. After
splitting time with Karl Stafford
last season, he finds himself al-
ternating again this year with
Patrick Tso, Brians twin brother.
Tso had 18 saves in the win
against Lawrence.
Were very lucky to have not
only Andrew but we have Patrick,
whos a very good goaltender as
well, Lassance said. Right now,
Ill split time with them until I see
whos the hottest at the end of the
season. Theyre both very capable
of taking over a game like An-
drew did against Steinert. Were
lucky to have two good goal-
tenders. They have a healthy com-
petition with each other and they
know that. And theyre backing
each other up.
Despite the teams youth, Las-
sance said he expects to improve
on last seasons success and to be
a strong and confident team
throughout the season.
The more we play together
and practice together, the more
the results are going to go our
way, Lassance said.
The full Pirates roster is as fol-
lows: Holubec, Adam Deslatte,
Steven Cangelosi, Ben Starace,
Patrick Menninger, Patrick Tso,
Brian Tso, Matthews, Matthew
Sayde, Henry Wei, Rob Brown,
Shikky Rathor, Nishant Modi and
Jeremy Greener.
