During a recent visit to the beautiful Italian region
of Tuscany, Etcetera magazine has had the chance
to catch up with Boro legend Massimo
Maccarone.
We met Massimo in a restaurant near the town of
Certaldo, amongst the Chianti vineyards and the
picturesque hilltop villages dating back to the
renaissance, and had the opportunity to meet his wife
Jessica and beautiful daughter Ginevra, who is now over
a year old and full of mischief.
Massimo seems to thrive in Tuscany, where after a spell
playing for Siena and scoring overall 40 goals for the
club in serie A, in the last couple of years has been
playing for Empoli, the Team from which he came from
when he joined Middlesbrough. This time he has helped
the team, that in the 2011-12 season only managed to
avoid relegation to serie C, to the serie B play off final
last season scoring 17 goals on the way but missing out
on a return to serie A by a single goal, and this year is
once again playing his part to help keeping Empoli at the
top of serie B, and in pole position for a possible return to
the Italian top division.
Although his time at Middlesbrough had highs and lows
Massimo has not forgotten the fans at the Riverside, and
has asked Etcetera to bring his best wishes to everyone
on Teesside, where he hopes one day to visit once again
to enjoy a good Parmo!
Arrivederci Massimo

Orangeries can provide a unique
multipurpose living space for every
home, from kitchen extension, living
room, dining room or playroom.
Our Orangery uses the market leading
Global roof with a well engineered
internal framework, which is then
plastered, and gives the roof a
perimeter ceiling all the way round.
Within this perimeter ceiling you can
choose to add downlighters or hi-fi
speakers giving you the opportunity to
personalise your new
room.
Viewed from
outside, the roof
of the Orangery is partially
hidden by a decorative fascia and this
shapely cornice conceals the Orangery
gutter for a more attractive external
appearance.
A conventional fully glazed
conservatory might not be to
everyones taste, therefore the added
style and decorative elegance of an
orangery creates a more susbstantial
and interesting effect.
NEW
A first in the area... this unique
system is as simple to build as
a Conservatory with all the
style and elegance of a
traditional Orangery!

Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis
Want to Lose Weight?
Hypnosis works with the subconscious part of our mind. Because
most eating habits are deeply ingrained in the subconscious.
Virtual Gastric Band hypnosis treatment is targeted to that area
of the mind to re-program your eating habits and your
relationship with food.
Most people who follow a traditional diet system will lose weight
whilst they are on that diet.
But, as soon as the diet stops, the weight invariably returns, often
leaving those heavier than before the diet began! It is estimated
that 95 per cent of all people who diet experience this cycle.
Most diets include some form of deprivation and/or denial some
involve counting calories, or points, but merely serve to
programme the mind to think about food. Thus, when an
individual gives up the diet, they will find themselves thinking
about food more than they ever did before!
And, in the denial of comfort foods, in eating different meals to
the rest of the family three thing happen, the brain fights against
it, the body fights against and the day to day environment fights
against it.
Conscious self denial of something can often increase the desire
for that very thing, and eating a little less than we need but
eating anything we want can actually lead to weight loss.
Everyone knows that eating less and exercising more will lead to
a better body shape, improved fitness and all-round health. This
programme employs an imaginary gastric band operation and
other mind management techniques, it is not a diet. It enables
clients to form new habits that they can maintain, there is no
deprivation and thus clients are liberated from having to think
about food all the time; they eat consciously, and are able to
listen to what their stomachs are telling them. The result is
steady, progressive weight loss without dieting.
This programme consists of five sessions that encourage
individuals to be satisfied on smaller amounts of food and to
exercise and bring about a permanent change in a persons
eating habits. This is not a short-term fix this is a potentially life-
changing treatment.
Elaine is a UKCP registered qualified psychotherapist with twenty
years experience in the field. With this she has a psychological
understanding which enhances her work as Virtual Gastric Band
Practitioner.

Did you know? Its whats going on inside your head that controls your eating habits.
fam shee
The fascination of how one can create extra ordinary
art work on a wall or a stretched canvas is what
made Fam decide to become a painter rather than a
playwright.
I did have ambitions of becoming a playwright but
soon realized I was a better painter than I was a
playwright.
During his time at University he developed a massive
love of realism painting especially in portrait painting.
He needed to create as much realism as possible and
spent hours in his studio studying the human anatomy
and flesh colours.
Fam is now a professional Muralist and his job is to
transform your artistic ideas on a wall. He uses
vibrant colours when painting cartoon characters on
kids bedroom walls; as well as harmonious colours
that can bring calm and tranquillity in a hospital
setting.
Fam has painted Murals in kids bedrooms at homes
in the North East and has also painted a Mural at the
Butterwick Hospice which was featured in the
Northern Echo.
He is open to commissions from corporate settings
and schools & Nurseries around the North East.

Property News
STOCKTON BORN Steve McDonald is back
on home territory after joining Hunters Teesside
team as their personal agent for Stockton, Yarm
and Eaglescliffe.
Steve, pictured, is the latest recruit at the most
northerly branch of the fast growing UK estate
agency. Having enjoyed great success in
Ingleby Barwick over the past 12 months,
Hunters is expanding into Stockton, Yarm and
Eaglescliffe on the back of figures revealing that
they sold more properties during August than
any other branch within the groups national
network of more than 100 branches.
An estate agent for nearly 20 years, Steve has
previously worked with estate agents in
Middlesbrough, Yarm, Stockton, Darlington,
Northallerton and Stokesley. Steve said: Its a
big patch to cover but I know Stockton like the
back of my hand, as I was born and bred here.
The redevelopment of Stockton High Street and
the way the town is trying to make more of its
proximity to the River Tees mean there are
plenty of positives about the town. Steve hit
the ground running when he quickly secured his
first home sale, a period property on Stocktons
Allendale Road.
Voted Best Lettings Partner for the entire
Northern region of Hunters national network,
the agency now has eight personal agents across
the Teesside region.

M
y lady friends seem to
fall into two categories,
one is the type that wears
footwear to keep their feet
from coming into contact
with the floor, irrespective
of what they look like, and
the other has a little heart
flutter anytime that shoes
are mentioned!.
I must admit I do tend to fall
into the latter category, and
have been known to buy
shoes in sales that are slightly
too small, on the off chance
that as they are so lovely,
they will fit me one day.
There is something about
quality high heeled shoes
that hold your foot like a kid
skin glove, that is enough to
turn the head of the hardest
hearted Birkenstock wearer.
In a moment of madness we
recently purchased the entire
shoe stock from a Vintage
clothing shop that had to
close, (I also admit to buying
their hats and handbags).
It felt like Christmas, - boxes
of fabulous leather, and skin
shoes from Victorian to
1950s in assorted sizes and
colours. When I put some in
the window, they acted like a
magnet, drawing in shoe
lovers, who just wanted to
handle the exquisite shoes,
(some of which have never
been worn), and those with
small enough feet managed
to go home with happy
smiles on their faces,
clutching their prizes.
It leads me into thinking
about the fascinating history
of Twentieth Century
footwear.How after the First
World War, everyone tried to
forget the burdens and
restrictions of wartime, when
new colours and fabrics
appeared in the market, and
styles were more varied than
ever each season. It was not
only the rich, that could take
advantage of the new
designs, as new shoe
companies appeared by the
end of the 1920s, and the
cost of mass production
made shoes more affordable.
Sandals appeared in the
middle of the 20s, as people
were no longer shocked at
the sight of an open foot.
They became popular for
evening wear, as well as for
sporty day wear in the
Summer. In the 1930s, the
heels on sandals became
higher, platforms and wedges
were introduced, and were
covered with Crepe de
Chine, satin, kid leather, and
reptile skins.
Wartime regulations decreed
that heels could not be over
2 in height and the
wedges were made of cork,
with no covering.Make do
and mend was the order of
the day, and styles were
more utilitarian.We are lucky
to have some of these styles
in our collection.
When Dior designed
theNew Look, the massive
platforms and wedges
became inappropriate and
were replaced with narrow
pumps and sandals. It was
Italian and French footwear
designers that narrowed the
heel to to add elegance and
fragility to a new feminine
silhouette.This carried on to
the 1950s and 1960s when
stilettos were in fashion, and
the shoes tapered to points.
Considering that feet have
been pretty much the same
shape all these years, it is
amazing how the fashion
industry has chosen to
encase them, not always to
the benefit of the wearers.
It is not about feet.. it is
about shoes!

If you have any comments on the master plan
designed to revive the fortunes of the airport at
DurhamTees Valley, you only have until 10th January
2014 to make them. Submissions have to be received
by midday on the tenth.
To make it easy, theres a questionnaire online at
www.DTVA-Master-Plan.co.uk
From the heady days of 2007, the usage of Durham
Tees Valley has slumped by 77%. It one of the steepest
declines of any UK regional airport, and thats a sector
full of many weak and failing operations. Prestwick
in Scotland has just been renationalised, and Cardiff
has had the same treatment, whilst Plymouth has
closed down altogether. DTVA, renamed from the old
Teesside Airport which name still survives on the
motorway signs on the A1(M) is certainly struggling.
On 21 September 2004 the airport was renamed
Durham Tees Valley Airport as part of a major
redevelopment plan. The renaming was unpopular
with many local residents. The name was changed
in order to place the airport better geographically, as
many of the airports passengers, particularly those
from outside the UK, were unfamiliar with the location
of Teesside, whilst Durham is better known. But for
many residents of Durham, the much better connected
airport at Newcastle is the preferred choice. Leeds
Bradford has also grown as the expense of DVTA.
A new access road, terminal front and terminal interior
were completed, but the remainder of a planned 56
million expansion and development programme which
would have enabled the airport to handle up to 3
million passengers annually never materialised due to
the above mentioned decrease in passenger numbers.
Other minor developments have seen new airfield
lighting installed and during 2012, six-figure sums
spent revamping the terminal building and renovating
one of the World War II-era hangars.
Passenger numbers peaked in 2006 when the airport
was used by 917,963 passengers, but declined to
164,826 in 2012, the lowest level seen at the airport
since 1972.
A glance at the departures board shown suggests you
can only go to two places beginning with A: Aberdeen
or Amsterdam. It looks like there are plenty of flights
to those two places until you realise that the display
shows all the departures for the rest of today, and
tomorrow too!
DURHAMTEES VALLEY AIRPORT
MASTER PLAN FOR
Atlantean on
Peel Airports, the private sector owner of the airport,
accept they are going to lose money for some time to
come, but have put forward ambitious plans to secure
the future of the airport, with new buildings on the
north side and the south side of the airport, and a new
freight siding from the Darlington to Middlesbrough
railway line. A vibrant mixed use community of
organisations is proposed around the airfield site. The
airport has given up on the charter market and will
concentrate on its core routes, but establishing a link
to London again after BMI pulled out is a priority.
All in all, its a brave plan for an airport which saw
its better days in 2004-7 and since then has been in
perhaps terminal decline. Becoming a niche market
business aviation centre with its links to well-
connected Amsterdam Schipol and Aberdeen for
the oil and chemical industries may be the kernel for
future growth, and I was not the only one at a business
briefing who was surprised to know DVTA has links to
Wick (for John OGroats) and Stornaway via Aberdeen.
Postscript to last month: Sarah got 500 of
her 800 back from that nasty little addiction
company and was told to accept it and shut up or
go into open court and have her addiction revealed.
She chose to lose the remaining 300.
Question: The airport code for Durham Tees Valley
Airport is MME. Anybody know why?
Atlantean offers a prize for the best response.

will be another way to get to the
supermarket, school or place of
work. Eventually we hope that it
will connect with other
footpaths and trails beyond
Ingleby Barwick.
Access works at Thornaby
Woods and Thornaby Plantation
are now complete, with further
access works for Hollybush
Plantation and Ingleby Wood
scheduled for completion by
Spring 2014.
Groundwork North East would
like to support people to get the
most out of the trail, not only by
walking it but helping to care
for and further develop the trail.
Opportunities for people to get
involved include practical
works on site as a volunteer trail
ranger, joining a local friends
of group, becoming a walk
leader, or providing trail
recordings such as wildlife
sightings, local history and trail
photographs.
If you represent a local school or
community group and would
like to organise a specific event
using the trail such as a
sponsored walk, or being
involved in helping create site
interpretation or a walk leaflet
then we want to hear from you.
For more information please
contact Amie on: 01642 613636
/ 07587 778449 or by email:
amie.henry@groundwork.org.uk
When complete the trail will be
around 10km (6miles) in total
length, providing everyone all
residents of Ingleby Barwick an
opportunity to stretch their legs
and enjoy the splendid
countryside that Ingleby
Barwick has to offer. If you have
any comments please email

Places to go
Shildon
When days are short and cold,
most people dont want to go on
trips away by train for pleasure,
but heres a trip which might
appeal: to the cradle of the
railways in Shildon, Co. Durham,
which can be reached on the
branch line from Darlington to
Bishop Auckland. Check your train
times in advance to maximise your
day. The site of the National
Railway Museum offshoot, known
as Locomotion, is interesting but
rather spread out: it takes twelve
minutes to walk from one end to
the other.
If you arrive by train at Shildon
station you can enter half way
between the two ends by piece of
artwork, a large pillar with
coloured lights called Light Engine
by Peter Freeman. You can control
the light display by texting the
name of six locomotives, including
Sans Pereil, Magnet and Arrow to
0783 414 7237 on your mobile
phone. (Of course, you can do this
from home by texting, say,
Globe to the number but the
effect is somewhat muted if youre
not standing next to the pillar!)
Theres a large exhibition hall to
the east with seven rail tracks
crammed full of locomotives,
carriages, models, and special
railway equipment such as snow
ploughs and a horse box. Thats
also the end with the caf and the
well-stocked shop. At the other
end there are various historic
houses including engineer Timothy
Hackworths own house, the
parcel office, Welcome Centre and

Soho, the oldest surviving industrial
building in Shildon. All these buildings
are set within the town environment
where real people live and work even
Beamish cant offer that! Shildon was
booming in the 1960s building freight
wagons but the works, which was the
home of the Stockton and Darlington
railway company, closed in 1984.
On 3 July 1938, the A4 class
locomotive Mallard set a locomotive
world speed record. Six A4s are on
display at Shildon from 15 to the 23
February, if you fancy postponing your
visit into next month. This event is free
and unticketed: simply arrive at the
museum to see Mallard, Union of
South Africa, Sir Nigel Gresley, Bittern,
Dwight D. Eisenhower and Dominion
of Canada in the same place, a Great
Gathering. Admission to Locomotion is
free and its open every day from 2
January.
