Volume no, 1, Issue no. 3 Special points of interest:

DECEMBER 2013

RORP RUNNING CLUB LOCAL PLUMBER

It was great to see around 60 residents at the first RORP social on Friday 6th December. It was a great success with lots of new friends being made, and when the pub closed a number of residents continued to party the night away at home. Rowan Park was certainly quiet the next day due to the number of sore heads around! We look forward to arranging the next event and have even more residents attend. If you have an idea for an event, please email RORP with your suggestions! It is good to see many residents are in the holiday spirit by decorating their homes, making Rowan Park feel festive and magical for the children living on the estate. Well done to all who have made the effort! Christmas is a busy time of year for everyone, including the criminal. Remember large piles of gift wrapped goodies under the tree that are visible through a door or window are tempting for burglars. And discarded packaging advertises all the new goods you have indoors. So keep things out of sight & stay crime victim free this Christmas. For further information and advice, please see the safer neighbourhood's newsletter on our Facebook page. RORP would like to wish all members & residents of Rowan Park A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! once a formal committee is in place. Anyone wishing to join the association, please see the back page.

WHAT OR WHO IS YOUR STREET / FLAT NAMED AFTER?

In 2011 Merton Council asked local people, schools & councilors to make suggestions for the names of the new roads and blocks situated within the development. 74 names were put forward & the chosen names were: STREETS: Jack Dimmer Close, named after Colonel John Henry Dimmer VC, MC, ATTD, 2nd/4THRoyal Berkshire Regiment who died age 35 in the Battle of the Somme. Cairns Avenue & Cairns Place, named after a former Merton Councillor. Jolly Mews, named after a former head teacher at Rowan Park School. Crowley Mews, after Sir Ambrose Crowley III (165817 Oct 1713) was a 17th-century English ironmonger. Tomblin Mews & Kerlin View, named after former school teachers of Rowan Park School. FLATS: Styles & Peaks House, P E Styles is a local family name and with W E Peakes were instrumental in founding the Baptist Church in 1940. Harrington House, named after a local environmentalist. Dove House, this name was suggested by the Pupils of Liberty School Year 4 as part of a school project called I love Mitcham. Fielding House after Michael and Noel Fielding who were lived and raised in Mitcham.

FESTIVE PERIOD RUBBISH COLLECTION CHANGES

Rubbish and recycling collections for Merton residents will take place earlier or later than your normal collection day over Christmas and New Year. Rubbish usually collected on a Friday will be collected on SATURDAY 28th DECEMBER & SATURDAY 4th JANUARY instead. For all other collection dates, see: www.merton.gov.uk A FREE CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION service is also offered, the collection period will be published on the website. Trees collected are either composted or turned into chippings which will be used as a mulch to spread on flower beds. The mulch will suppress weed growth and help the soil to retain moisture.

DOOR SAFETY
Longthornton has been experiencing an increase in burglaries and one of the noticeable methods of entry has been through UPVC front doors, which have not been secured properly. We are asking all residents to ensure that they check, shut and lock all doors and windows before going out, overnight and when any room is unoccupied. This includes key locking doors with handle operated locking systems, pulling the handle up is not enough to prevent entry. The key must be used to actually lock the door.
