Creating A Vhost

Vhosts are used by vio servers to assign backend disks to LPARs. Vhosts are basically just communication pipes to the LPARS. To create a permenant pipeline rom the vio server to the client LPAR! the pipeline needs to be created "hile both machines are do"n. #. Log in to the vio server as $padmin$. %. Scroll to the bottom o the listing! and look or the last entry o $Type$? $Server SCS*$. 6ote the values in these % ields? Adapter *+ Connecting Adapter Bhat these % ields mean? The vhost &the communication pipe' has % ends. :ne end connects to the vio server. The $Adapter *+$ is this end. The other end connects to the client LPAR. The $Connecting Adapter$ is this end.

*n our e5ample! the last $Server SCS*$ has an $Adapter *+$ o $/%$. This is a virtual scsi adapter. :n the server! the virtual scsi $/%$ "ill be kno"n to connect to the pipe to the client LPAR. :n the client! the virtual scsi adapter! $Connecting Adapter$! used is $/%$. This means that! on the client! the virtual scsi adapter "ith the *+ o $/%$ "ill connect back to the vio server through the vhost communication pipe. To make li e easier "hen managing the vio server! and clients! "e have chosen to have the adapter values on both ends be the same. That "ay you only need to remember # number. @o"ever! they do not need to be the same. #,. To create a ne" vhost &communication pipe'! go to the drop do"n menu in the upper le t hand corner. Select? ##. *n it! #' Set the $Virtual SCS* adapter Adapter$ ield to a value that is not being used. &The easiest thing to do is to add % to the highest value previously used. *n our e5ample! /% "as the last number used. There ore! /2 is the value "e "ill use.' Note this value. You will need it when creating the virtual scsi adapter on the client. %' Select? $This adapter is reCuired or partition activation.$. /' Choose? $:nly selected client partiton can connect$. 2' ;rom $Client partition ?$! choose the client LPAR. 0' ;or $Client adapter *+ ?$! enter the same value or as in ##.#. The $Client adapter *+ ?$ is the virtual scsi adapter on the client side. Note this value. You will need it when creating the virtual scsi adapter on the client.
