1. The purpose of regression analysis is used to predict a response variable based on one or more explanatory variables. ts basically a forecast model used to predict variables that are not kno!n. "ata sets are relational databases that are used to relate different sets to determine relationships. "ata sets are basically unfiltered functions. Meaning that functions are the polished model derived from data sets. #. a. "ependent and ndependent $ariables% ndependent variables are variables that cant be changed by other variables. t&s used as a point to find relationships among other variables. "ependent variables ho!ever depend on other factors. Test scores are dependent because they depend on study time' etc. (hen it comes to relationships you are mostly trying to find !hat t!o things change the dependent variables. b. Mean )oint% The mean point is a point on the graph that is found !hen all the values are added up and divided by ho! many there are. c. *lope% The slope is an up!ard or do!n!ard inclination on the graph. f the slope rises from left to right then it is a positive slope. f it falls from left to right then it is a negative slope. d. +egression ,-uation% The regression e-uation is used to explain or predict the behavior of a dependent variable. .sually this e-uation takes the form of y/a0bx0c. 1 is the dependent variable that the e-uation tries to predict. 2 is the dependent variable that is used to try and predict y. A is the y% intercept of the line. And c is the regression residual. e. 3orrelation 3oefficient% The correlation coefficient is also kno!n as 4r5. t is the main result of a correlation. t ranges from %1.6 to 01.6. The closer it is to 01 or %1' the more closely the t!o variables are related. f. + s-uared% + s-uared is basically an indicator that indicates ho! !ell data points fit a line or curve. t is used for predicting future outcomes and testing hypothesis. 7. a. To interpret the results from the graph in -uestion 7a look !here the line runs through. 9ook at the x variables that match !ith the y variables. .se the x and y variables that touch the line of best fit to compare to the variables given in the dataset at the start of the problem. c. n excel to graph the data like in -uestion 7a you !ould first put the data set onto a spreadsheet ?optional@. The mean point fits nicely on the scatter plot in relation to all the other points it isn&t off by an extreme amount. The slope indicates that it is a negative slope running do!n!ard from left to right. The correlation coefficient indicates that the t!o variables are very closely related since %.E is very close to %1. This r s-uared value indicates that the points fit nicely on the line. c. The results of my analysis indicates that the heavier the vehicle the !orse mileage it has. 9ighter vehicles have a higher gas mileage. d. The graph belo! sho!s a scatter plot !ith all the points and a line of best fit. The y%axis is miles per gallon and the x%axis is !eight in pounds.
