PROBLEM: Kim Sporting Equipment, Inc., makes two different types of cricket gloves: a regular model and a catcher's model. The firm has 900 hours of production time available in its cutting and sewing department, 300 hours available in its finishing department, and 100 available in its packaging and shipping department. The production time requirements and the profit contribution per glove are given in the following table. Model Regular Model Catcher's Model Production Time (hours) Cutting and Finishing Packing and Profit/Glove Sewing shipping ( ) 1 0.5 0.125 300 1.5 0.33 0.25 480

Assuming that the company is interested in maximizing the total profit contribution, answer the following: a. What is the linear programming model for this problem? b. Find the optimal solution using the graphical solution procedure. How many gloves of each model should Kim manufacture? c. What is the total profit contribution Kim can earn with the given production quantities? d. How many hours of production time will be scheduled in each department? l'. What is the slack time in each department?

SOLUTION:
a. Let us assume the following decision variables such as: X1 = total number of units made of regular model of cricket gloves X2 = total number of units made of catchers model of cricket gloves OBJECTIVE FUNCTION: Maximize Z= 300 X1 +480 X2 CONSTRAINTS: X1 + 1.5 X2 <= 900 0.5 X1 + 0.33 X2 <= 300 0.125 X1 + 0.25 X2 <= 100 As non-negativity RESTRICTIONS are applicable for this system, we can write the constraints as X1 >= 0, X2 >= 0

LPP FORMULATION: Maximize Z= 300 X1 +480 X2 Subject to X1 + 1.5 X2 <= 900 0.5 X1 + 0.33 X2 <= 300 0.125 X1 + 0.25 X2 <= 100 (X1, X2)>= 0

b. Optimal solution using graphical solution procedure

Substituting (501.5,149.3) Objective Function value: 22208.6 Substituting (600, 0) Objective Function value: 180000 Substituting (0,400) Objective Function value: 192000 Substituting (0, 0) Objective Function value: 0 The production values considered are 501 units and 149 units.

c. The profit under the given constraints is maximized by producing 501 units of X1 and 149 units of X2 and the maximum profit is: (501*300) + (149*480) Profit: INR 222089/-

d. Slack Hours Section Cutting and Sewing Finishing Packing and Shipping Hours Scheduled 900 300 100 Hours Utilised 575.5 299.67 99.88 Slack hours 224.5 .33 .12
