outstanding programme, selling tickets and developing the ‘must-be-
there’ event for up and coming social entrepreneurs in the UK.

Job Title: Producer/Developer

Purpose: To develop and produce SHINE – the un-conference for

social entrepreneurs in the UK. To build the partnerships,
funding base, audience, online community and brand of
SHINE in 2009 and to establish SHINE as a major event in the
social entrepreneurs’ calendar.

Salary: initial fee of £10,000 + commission

Based: Shoreditch, East London

Terms: 9 month freelance contract

Potential for follow-on contract, based on delivery
Office or home based, flexible working environment
Regular team meetings
Support from core team + office/IT systems
Potential to increase fee on commission basis
The Project

SHINE is an annual event for new and emerging social entrepreneurs who
want to change the world through socially responsible business.

SHINE is currently the most unique event in the calendar for social
entrepreneurs – run using ideas from un-conferencing - where many-to-
many is richer than one-to-many, and where participants shape the
content. SHINE is the opposite of the ‘done-to’ event where the audience
is passive and the top table rules. SHINE is a marketplace of ideas,
funding, business advice and social concern where social entrepreneurs
can connect to network and hone their skills.

SHINE was first produced in 2008 and again in 2009. 35% of participants
in 2009 said it was the best social enterprise event they’d ever been to.

Our aim is for SHINE to be the event for social entrepreneurs from 2010
and beyond, and explore other opportunities including regional events.

To do this, we need to build on our sponsorship base, raise additional

income, attract more support from leading investors, business schools,
marketing agencies and consultancies, and develop our audience.

The Producer/Developer of SHINE will need to deliver all of the above, as

well as develop the un-conference format, and deliver a unique,
dynamic and sometimes anarchic event with exceptionally high
production values.

Specific Responsibilities

Raising sponsorship and managing sponsor relations

To raise sponsorship to an agreed target for SHINE’10, re-engaging
existing sponsors and securing new sponsors for SHINE’10. Raising money
will build on an established track record and comprehensive evaluation,
plus new ideas. You will be responsible for the day-to-day management
of relations with sponsors and for encouraging them to input more than
only money into the event’s success and future.

Budgeting
You will manage the overall budget for the event, ensuring the event
makes a profit and sponsors money is used wisely, and the optimum
event is delivered within budget. With support from the Director and
finance team.

Project management
Responsible for planning and overseeing how the project will work, using
our online tools including Basecamp and Salesforce. You will need to set
deadlines, agree sign off for key elements of the plan and manage the
delivery, including managing other germination staff and partners.

Event Management
You’ll be responsible for making sure the event is run to the highest un-
conference standards, including all the basics of a smooth front-of-house
operation, an outstanding venue, event design and excellent
programming. You will need to attract a team of ‘un-consultants’ to work
with you to run the event, and manage all of the team on the day.

Programming
You’ll oversee the programme for SHINE, including the co-created format
as well as partner content. We want to deepen and extend the content
for SHINE while continuing a radical and surprising agenda – your main
creative job will be delivering this – for example working out what the
Kaos Pilots will do this year.

Ticket Sales
SHINE’10 is an event for over 300 social entrepreneurs in central London in
May ’10. You will need to set the ticket price, market the event, reach
social entrepreneurs where other events don’t reach, and sell 300+
tickets. Most importantly, we are building a community of social
entrepreneurs who have something to give and gain from the main
event, and other initiatives we develop this year. With support from the
Marketing Manager.

Partnerships
You will liaise with, communicate, share information and generally keep
on board project partners which include sponsors, agencies (like What
If?!, Mother and the Social Leadership Programme), sector investors and
support agencies and people who can provide interesting content. Most
importantly, you’ll be the main contact with the founding partners –
UnLtd, School for Social Entreprenuers, the Hub and Ashoka.

Evaluation
You’ll outline what you think sponsors, media partners and others need
to know about the impact of SHINE and design the evaluation, make sure
its carried out and delivered on time. Working with an external evaluator
and the Director.

The Extras
SHINE is an exceptional event, created by some of the most innovative
and influential minds in social enterprise. Producing this event is a
chance to be creative, move beyond traditional formats, develop an
influential network and help to create the businesses of the future.
