Soddo Christian Hospital

In the picture below is Moges operating with gynecologist Dr. Mark Karnes. Moges started his rotation in gynecology and obstetric for 3 months. Here, the maternal death is high. Data shows 1 death for every 200 live births. The cause is usually lack of knowledge, insufficient financial means to pay for treatment, no transport to reach a hospital in time, and lack of (schooled) midwives, physicians, surgeons and lack of equipment. The government adopted the policy that no woman should die in childbirth and ambulances are being donated to the rural areas, so that people can reach hospitals faster. Moges went to Zimbabwe mid November for his practical exam for the College of Surgeons of Central East and South Africa. He passed and has become a member of this college. At the moment I am on my maternity leave. I assist in the compound with organizing and paying personnel when other families on the compound are on furlough.

2 Dutch clinical midwives

Marieke Peulers and Deborah van Wiersum, 2 clinical midwives from the Netherlands, came to work here for 6 weeks starting from the end of October. They have been a great help here. They worked with the nurses and midwives in the gynecology and obstetric department. They assisted the gynecologist, attended deliveries, worked in antenatal clinic. During their stay here they also conducted many clinical lessons and helped organize the department. In the night it can be cold in Soddo and premature babies are in need of heat to maintain their body temperature. Because of the midwives donations a heater was given to the hospital. The heater was transported to Soddo by my parents and the transport costs were covered by the Julianaschool in Winterswijk. Furthermore they were instrumental in implementing sanitary pads in the department. See also their blog: www. mariekepeul- Clinical lesson about baby resuscitation ers.reislogger.nl, www.soddospecialdelivery .org/newsletters/busytown, nov.17.
My parents were here and my father mounted the heater on the wall together with Bafa ( a hospital maintenance worker).
