Estimating Assignment

Assignment - Caisson example - B of Q data sheet You are working in the Engineering Office of a consulting engineering organisation preparing designs, drawings, specifications and tender documents for the construction of three cylindrical concrete caissons similar to those shown on the following pages, with specific details thus Internal diameter Wall thickness Depth to be sunk Reinforcing steel One 20 m diameter caisson and two each 15 m diameter, spaced in triangle 50 m centres apart. (Refer sketch). 500 mm (both 15m. and 20m. dia. Caissons) Each 15 m diameter caissons to depth 10m, 20m diameter caisson to depth of 15 m (to underlying clay) vertical 24 mm plain bars at 500mm centres alternating inside and outside 24 mm plain horizontal bars at 500mm centres on caisson wall centrelines (Note: Rebar comes in standard 12 m lengths). Assume specified lap = 850 mm, weight of rebar = 3.64 kg / m. To eliminate exterior skin friction, the base of the caisson walls are 50 mm thicker (on the exterior) for a height of 500 mm and cast inside an inward sloping 45 degree welded plate cutting edge with 50 mm flat at the bottom and exterior plate level with interior edge (Refer sketch page 4). The contractor will be required to backfill this with material from stockpile after caisson sinking is completed. Flush with surrounding surface. Sandy loam from excavation used to backfill 50 mm void around the caissons (caused by widening of cutting edge) and remainder stockpiled adjacent to the site.

The construction technique to be used is fixed formwork at surface level, concrete poured in 1metre lifts and lowering of caissons to their final level by excavation of the internal diameter. After excavation, the floor is to be trimmed, and a layer of graded crushed rock one metre thick is to be spread uniformly over the floor. Your supervisor has agreed that only the following items will be measured for payment 1 Excavation in material other than rock and disposal in stockpiles within 150 m of site 2 Supply & place vertical and horizontal reinforcing steel to specification in caisson walls 3 Formwork for casting of interior and exterior caisson walls 4 Supply and place specification concrete in caisson walls 5 Supply and place crushed rock base in caisson 6 Install welded steel cutting edge to be provided by Principal in max 4 m lengths

Estimating Assignment

Assignment - Caisson example - B of Q data sheet PART 1 Quantity Takeoff The two different caisson sizes will be kept separate. That is, the quantities for the two A caissons, each 15 m. Diameter, will be combined. The 20 m. diameter B caisson will be measured separately. Measured quantities will then be added for total quantities. No other quantities will be measured for the Bill of Quantities to be used in the tender documents (hence you are not required to measure them). Measurement is to be in accordance with the provisions of AS 1181 1982. 1. Bill of Quantities:
Caisson A (for 2 off)

Description 1 Excavation (common material) 2 Reinforcing steel 3 Formwork (walls) 4 Concrete (supply & place) 5 Graded crushed rock (base of caisson) 6 Install Cutting Edges (Principal supply)

HES5175 PART 2 Production Rates

Estimating Assignment

Use the following information to set up crews and production rates: Clamshell bucket excavation (with crane) 30 % foreman / crane + operator / 2 labourers - 15 Bm3 per machine hour average Small FEL (front end loader) for handling / spreading spoil 10 % foreman / operator - 25 Bm3 per machine hour average Hand trimming floor after excavation 50 % foreman / 5 labourers / small compressor + air tools Formwork erection & stripping, cleaning etc 40 % foreman / 6 labourers / crane + operator 20 % time - 1 MH / 5 m2 - 20 m2 / man day

Concrete placing, compaction, scrabbling, etc 100 % foreman / 6 labourers / crane + operator 100 % time / small air compressor + vibrators, etc - 2 MH / m3 Rebar handling & placing 50 % foreman / 6 labourers / crane + operator 10 % time Assembling & welding cutting edge - 20 MH / tonne

- 20 MH / join for assembly & welding - 50 m3 per machine hour

Place crushed rock in base 10 % foreman / crane + operator + spotter + bucket average

Note: Bm3 = Bank cubic metres (no allowance for bulking) MH = Manhours Note: This is a summary table. The information contained here is developed from the Production Rate take-off sheet illustrated on the last page. 2. Production Rates Estimate:
Caisson A (for 2 Off) Sum of Production Rates (2A +B)

Description 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Minimum number of pours required Excavation (time per lift) Rebar (time per lift) Formwork (time per lift) Concrete (time per lift) Minimum (time per lift) Total manhours Total crane hours

What you are required to do for this assignment: Prepare responses to the questions asked in this assignment, using the spreadsheet formats illustrated. Spreadsheets are to have your name and student ID, sheet reference and page number on every page.

1. 2. 3. 4.

Bill of Quantities (summary as per table above). Quantity takeoff sheet (with calculations showing the way values in the B of Q have been derived). Production Rates Estimate (summary as per table above). Production Rate Take-off Sheet (as above with data and calculations showing the way values in 3 above have been derived).

Note: This assignment is to be prepared and submitted by individual students. Although you may discuss this assignment with other students the work must be your own without receiving undue assistance. Receiving undue assistance is when some other person contributes their work to an item of assessment that is intended to assess your capability. In cases of copied work both the person who copies and the one who allows their work to be copied may both be penalised. Spreadsheets must be retained on your Swinburne student log in file and may be called upon by the lecturer after submission.
