TIMIOARA
Lying on the Hungarian and Serbian borders, Timioara is
the gateway to the West and has a long history of
cosmopolitan multiculturalism. It is most famous today as
the birthplace of the 1989 Romanian revolution that ended
the Ceauescu dictatorship.

THE CITY#THECITY#
Timioara is the regional capital of Banat
province, the abundant agricultural
heartland of Romania, as reflected in the
citys many restaurants. It is Romanias
most cosmopolitan city, owing to its liberal
history and the diverse ethnicities that
make up its population. Timioara has a
large Hungarian population, as well as
Serbs, Germans and Roma. It has been
dubbed `the city of flowers in honour of
the many parks which circle the city, but is
most recently (and affectionately) known
to its inhabitants as `Primul Ora Liber -
the first free town - in reference to its part
in the revolution of 1989. It was here that
a Hungarian priest first spoke out against
the dictator Ceauescu, resulting in one of
the most passionate revolutions in recent
European history.
The city has an easy-going Latin feel to it,
with large squares lined by coffee shops
and cafs, and some fine architecture
revealing the citys Hapsburg past. It was
the first city in Europe to introduce
horse-drawn trams in 1869, and they are
still here now - minus the horses! Today,
people are fast adjusting to the new
democracy, with a thriving city centre and
new ventures opening all the time.

EATING#EATING#
Traditional Romanian cuisine is big and
hearty, using the natural produce of the
country to produce dishes of a distinctly
central European flavour, with Turkish
influences. The most popular ingredients
you will find in Romanian cooking are
various types of pork, cabbage, potatoes
and mamaliga - a cornmeal similar to
Italian polenta. Over the last decade or so,
international foods have become ever more
popular and you will find Mediterranean
eateries across Timioara.

SHOPPING#SHOPPING#
Romanians are immensely proud of their
culture, and in this western part of the
country where so many other races
intermingle, that cultural history is even
more varied. One thing you will come
across in abundance is the folk arts, crafts
and costumes of the Banat region - both
historically interesting and very beautiful.
The Banat Ethnographic Museum (Str Popa
Sapca) sells local crafts and costumes, and
also head for the Piaa Victoriei, where you
will find among lines of shops selling all
sorts of souvenirs and modern
conveniences, Galeria Helios and Galeriile
de Arta Populara with local crafts.
For everything under one roof - from
designer clothes to jewelry, electronics and
music - head for Bega Shopping Center
(Str Bocsei 3). The Banat region is also
justifiably famed as the fertile agricultural
heartland of Romania, and there are
markets worth visiting for local produce on
Str Coriolan Brediceanu or in Piaa Badea
Cartan. Romania has a large wine industry,
and just 25km out of Timioara you will
find the Recas vineyards where you can
take wine tasting tours and buy the
produce (www.recaswine.ro). In the more
immediate vicinity, the Timioreana
brewery in the Fabric district has a long
history of brewing some of Romanias best
beers in the historic vaulted buildings.
