Hue 5 Mixing Instructions

Follow the following instructions to mix Munsell 5PB, 5G, & 5GY. It is important to note that the artist must use the colors and brands specified in order to receive proper results. On occasion, other brands may be substituted with varying degrees of accuracy and chromaticity. To mix Munsell Neutral Black (close approximate): Add 5 parts Ivory Black to 1 part Burnt Umber. To mix Munsell 5G: Add Gamblin Pthalo Green to Winsor and Newton Cadmium Yellow Lemon to the 4 value. A small amount Pthalo Green is required for this mixture. To mix Munsell 5GY: Add Gamblin Pthalo Green to Winsor and Newton Cadmium Yellow Lemon to the 8 value. An extremely small amount Pthalo Green is required for this mixture. To mix Munsell 5PB (close approximate): Mix 1 part Gamblin Pthalo Blue to 1 part Gamblin Ultramarine Blue. The Home value will be a 1. Full chroma will be at a 4 value. To check Munsell placement add Gamblin Radiant White to a 4 value to check its placement between Munsell 5B and Munsell 5P. For this workshop 1 part is equivalent to a nut of paint. A nut of paint is roughly the size of a quarter in diameter with a slight peak (comparable to the amount of paint a walnut shell might hold). Due to the relative inaccuracy of using a nut as a measuring tool, the mixture may require some adjustment. For our purposes these measurements will place the desired mixture within a close enough range to accomplish the days tasks. It is always recommend that the artist, when using Munsell, compare his\her color mixtures to the Munsell charts.
