Derive the torque equation of DC motor and draw the speed torque characteristics of all types of DC motors. What is the importance of starter in a DC motor? Draw a neat sketch of a three point starter and explain its operation. The core of a 100 KVA, 11000/550 V, 50 Hz, 1-ph, core type transformer has a cross-section of 20 cm 20 cm. Find: (i) The number of H.V. and L.V. turns per phase and (ii) The e.m.f. per turn if the maximum core density is not to exceed 1.3 Tesla. Assume a stacking factor of 0.9. Explain how the OC and SC test results of a transformer help in the computation of efficiency and regulation of the transformer. Develop an expression for the percentage regulation of the transformer. Draw the cross section view of DC machine and explain the function of each parts. Derive the EMF equation of a DC generator. Explain the operation of a single phase transformer with load, and also draw the phasor diagram of loaded transformer. A 4 KVA, 200/400 V, single-phase transformer takes 0.7 amp and 65 W on open-circuit. When the low-voltage winding is short-circuited and 15 V is applied to the high-voltage terminals, the current and power are 10 A and 75 W respectively. Calculate the full-load efficiency at unity power factor and full-load regulation at unity and 0.80 power-factor lagging. Explain the concept of rotating magnetic field in 3 phase induction motor. What are the two types alternator and write any three differences between them? What are the basic characteristics of measuring instruments? With a neat diagram, explain the construction, working principle of permanent magnet moving iron type instrument.

5 (a) Describe and explain the following welding methods giving their advantages, limitations and specific applications: (i) MIG. (ii) TIG and submerged arc welding. What are the functions of welding fluxes and filler rods? Explain with neat sketches the differences between the operation of impulse and reaction turbine. Describe with neat sketches the working of a simple constant pressure open cycle gas turbine. How does the actual cycle differ from the theoretical cycle? Describe with neat sketch the working principle of single stage reciprocating air compressor. Two parallel shafts, connected by a crossed-belt, are provided with pulleys 480 mm and 640 mm in diameters. The distance between the centre lines of the shafts is 3 m. Find by how much the length of the belt should be changed if it is desired to alter the direction of rotation of the driven shaft. Sketch the layout of an air conditioning system and explain the functions of each component in it. How the concrete mixer used in construction work? Explain commonly used different types of concrete mixers.

A long shunt compound generator delivers a load current of 50 A and ahs armature, series and shunt field resistances of 0.05 , 0.03 and 250 respectively. Calculate the generated voltage and the armature current. Allow 1 V per brush for contact drop. What are the applications of DC motors (give at least one for each type). And draw the mechanical characteristics of DC shunt motor. A. The O.C and S.C test data are given below for a single phase, 5 KVA, 200 V/400 V, 50 Hz transformer. O.C test from LV side: 200 V 1.25A 150 W S.C test from HV side: 20 V 12.5 A 175 W Find the efficiency of the transformer at 0.8 lagging power factor and 80% load. What is meant by regulation of a transformer? A 3-phase, Y-connected, round-rotor synchronous generator rated at 10 KVA, 230 V has a synchronous reactance of 1.2 per phase and an armature resistance of 0.5 per phase. Calculate the percent voltage regulations at full-load with 0.8 lagging and 0.8 leading power factors. What is the reason for making the field system to rotate in an alternator? Write two function of each part in the DC generator given below. Yoke, pole core and shoe, armature core, and commutator. A short shunt compound D.C. Generator supplies a current of 75 A at a voltage of 225 V. Calculate the generated voltage if the resistance of armature, shunt and series filed windings are 0.04 , 90 , and 0.02 respectively. A 25 KVA transformer has 500 turns on the primary and 50 turns on the secondary winding. The primary is connected to 3000 V, 50 Hz supply. Find the full-load primary and secondary currents, the secondary e.m.f. and the maximum flux in the core. Neglect leakage drops and noload primary current. What are the different losses in transformer and explain each of it? What is damper winding and what for it is provided in alternators? Derive the EMF equation of an alternator. And briefly explain the different factors (pitch factor, distribution factor and from factor). Explain the following: sensitivity, accuracy and dead time. Define and explain with examples the different types of possible errors in measurement.
