Hardware prerequisites and general information

a.) Control Unit CU320 version

Firmware Versions from V2.4 require a Control Unit CU320, Version C or higher. You can check the version of your Control Unit CU320 on the type plate of the Control Unit CU320:

Fig. 1: CU320: Type plate with version data Some functions are only available from a certain version release of CU320 onwards.

b.) Power unit - control electronics version

Several power units include a Control Interface Board (CIB), which only support component firmware versions up to V02.10.xx.xx. When updating the component firmware to V2.5, these power units automatically only include firmware V02.10.42.00. This involves units that were originally supplied with firmware versions V2.1 or V2.2. (For a full functional scope of V2.5, these units require a new CIB module.) With component firmware V2.10.42.00, several functions are not available on these units. Note: If these functions are not required, drive firmware V2.5 can also completely run with older version releases of the CIB.

The following individual functions are involved: Function Component name Component Order No. [MLFB] Function is available from the version release of the chassis / basic unit M M M1

Edge modulation (optimized pulse pattern) Parallel connection Safety Integrated function "Safe Torque Off" (previously "Safe standstill") and Safe Stop 1

Chassis po- 6SL3320.../6SL3310... wer unit (CIB) Chassis po- 6SL3320.../6SL3310... wer unit (CIB) Chassis po- 6SL3320.../6SL3310... wer unit (CIB)

When installing a replacement CIB, the possible function scope can be identified by the last position of the Order No. (MLFB). If the last position is equal or greater than 3, then the above listed functions are available.

CIB modules that have the full functional scope are identified by the so-called "ears" the three screws that hold the shielding plate.

Note:

Safety Integrated functions can be used only if the HW components used for this purpose have already been approved for Safety Integrated functionality. The hardware components approved for Safety Integrated are available on request from your local Siemens office.

c.) Notes on infeeds

With FW 2.5.1 and higher, the pre-charging and main contactors for infeed types ALM and SLM are switched with an overlap. Therefore, before a system is operated with the new firmware, the wiring of the pre-charging and main contactors must be checked for the correct phase sequence. This check must always be performed before any upgrade even on ready-assembled systems supplied from the factory! If the contactors are incorrectly wired, short circuits or (undetected) overloading of the pre-charging resistors can occur when the infeeds are switched on!

III.

Preparatory steps to upgrade the firmware

a.) Initial situation / prerequisites:

The starting point is a Sinamics S120 Chassis, S150, G150 or G130 with firmware release V2.1.x.x up to V2.4.x.x that was already commissioned.

b.) Backing-up the parameters

To back-up the parameterization, the following steps must be carried-out. If you are not knowledgeable about the STARTER commissioning software, then please read the relevant sections of the STARTER online help. Connect the PG/PC to the drive using the Profibus connecting cable Set-up a project with STARTER or use an existing project Change into the ONLINE operating mode Load the parameterization into the PG/PC Save the parameters on the hard disk Remain in the ONLINE operating mode

c.) Checking the firmware release in the drive unit

You can check the active firmware version in the drive unit using STARTER as follows: In STARTER, change to the screen <device name 2 > Configuration and here on the tab page "Version overview" (refer to Fig. 2).

2 Standard names are, e.g. Sinamics S 120, drive unit_01,

IV.

Upgrading Control Unit 320 firmware and component firmware

This firmware is provided on a Compact Flash card (CF, type 1). The card is inserted in the slot at the front of the CU 320. Note: All of the converter power supplies must be switched-out before withdrawing the Compact Flash card! Only switch-in again after the new card has been inserted!

1. Switch-out all of the converter power supplies (main and auxiliary power supply). 2. Remove the Compact Flash card (CF card) located in the converter and keep it in a safe, protected place. 3. Replacing 4. Insert the new CF card (observe the direction arrow!) and then switch-in the converter power supply. The LEDs on the control module start to light up. 5. The individual components then start to automatically boot (new feature of Version V2.5). This is identified when the LEDs on the components (TM31, CIB) flash green-red and the RDY-LED of the CU slowly flashes orange. It can take some time (up to 15 minutes per power unit) to load the new firmware into the components. (The components are automatically upgraded individually one after the other.) 6. After the upgrade, the RDY-LED of the CU flashes quickly with an orange light. Only switch-in the voltage again after this and then re-boot. 7. Connect the converter to STARTER and load the backed-up project into the target device (" Download" - i.e. in this case, in the CU320). Then back-up the data in the drive unit (Menu "Target system" Copy from RAM to ROM). 8. In STARTER, change to the screen <device name 3 > Configuration and here on the tab page "Version overview" (refer to Fig. 2). Now, the firmware for all of the components should be at the latest version (with the exception of CIB when upgrading from V2.1/ V2.2 to V2.5). If a component should not be upgraded, then individual components can be subsequently upgraded using the button "Firmware update" (refer to Fig. 4 and Fig. 5).

V.

Replacing the AOP30 and upgrading the firmware.

a.) Loading the AOP firmware

When upgrading firmware older than V2.4, then the existing AOP must be replaced by a new one with a larger memory (6SL3055-0AA00-4CA3). With this AOP and using firmware from V2.4, it is no longer necessary to load a language database via the PC. When the drive boots for the first time, all of the information is downloaded from the CF card. A new AOP is not necessary when updating from V2.4 to V2.5. The AOP only prompts as to whether a more recent version is contained on the CF card. Answer this question with "Yes". Do not switch-out the voltage while the firmware is being uploaded!
