I don't know what drew me to this one, but it just "talked" to me. Maybe it's the way it's fractured, yet it still seems to be together. You need 3 fabrics for this block: a medium, a dark and your background. We will be making this one 12" finished. General Reminders...(1) If there are any in the block, I have you cut slightly large for the HalfSquares Triangles (HST), so you MUST square them up as I direct, and (2) there is no sashing in the quilt to "fudge" block sizes, so you need to be exact with your finished block sizes in order to join them easily. In case you are wondering what colors I'm using in the blocks...the fabrics that I used are the same colors as my graphics. I hope this will be the start of a fun project for us all! Cut 4 2-1/2"x4-1/2" rectangles Background Cut 16 2-1/2" squares Cut 1 2-1/2"x11" strip

Cut 1 4-1/2" square Cut 1 2-1/2"x11" strip

Cut 8 2-1/2"x4-1/2" rectangles

Sewing Directions

Mark a diagonal on the wrong side of all the 2-1/2" squares of Bkg. Watching orientation as shown...place a 2-1/2" square of Bkg on one corner of 4 2-1/2"x4-1/2" rectangles of Dark...right sides together. Stitch just to the outside of the diagonal line. Repeat on opposite corner...press open to corners. Turning the unit face down, trim back to size. You may now trim the excess fabric from the corners, if you choose. (Diagram 1) Repeat step#2 to create the 4 mirror units. (Diagram 2) Join a unit from step#2 and step#3...press either way. Square up to 4-1/2". (Diagram 3) Attach 2-1/2"x11" strip of Bkg to same of Medium...press toward Medium. Cut 4 2-1/2" units from new strata. (Diagram 4) Attach a 2-1/2"x4-1/2" rectangle of Bkg to units cut from step#5...pressing toward Bkg rectangle. Make 2 of each orientation shown. Square up to 41/2". (Diagram 5) Attach one of each unit from step#6 to opposite sides of unit from step#4...press toward Bkg rectangles. (Diagram 6) Attach last 2 units from step#4 to opposite sides of 4-1/2" square of Medium. Press away from center. (Diagram 7) Attach rows from step#7 to opposite sides of row from step#8...press either way. (Diagram 8) IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 12-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create the finished quilt.
