MTN: the right tool for the job

MTN: the right tool for the job

The WiMAX versus HSPA and LTE debate continues, yet the experience of MTN, the dominant mobile operator on the African
continent, is a positive proof that the two technologies are complementary and not competitive. The GSM based operator
has already deployed three successful commercial WiMAX networks and more are slated in the near future. In an exclusive
interview with COMMUNICATE, Mr. Joos Louw reveals their WiMAX strategy and concerns. He is a Senior Technology
Strategist at MTN Group R&D, responsible for the MTN Group’s WiMAX strategy.

access bearer networks, integration with existing networks, and so on. operators are now placing their eyes on a black horse,
WiMAX.
Now, WiMAX is proving to be a very effective
solution for the last mile of broadband access.
According to statistics recently released by the
WiMAX Forum, over 460 WiMAX networks have
now been set up in 135 countries around the world,
and 170 of them are presently in commercial use.
Over 4 million users currently have access to high
speed broadband networks via WiMAX. Therefore,
through studying existing WiMAX networks in
various ways, a lot can be learned about network
deployment by operators who are planning to deploy
WiMAX networks.

Frequency selection
Presently, the spectrum profiles most frequently
being used by existing WiMAX networks are 2.3GHz
(10%), 2.5GHz (40%) and 3.5GHz (50%). 2.5GHz
is currently the most ideal spectrum in terms of
frequency characteristics, terminals maturity, future
global roaming and other relevant factors. Therefore,
operators should first consider 2.5GHz when apply
frequency for new WiMAX networks.
In addition, operators should apply as many
spectrums as possible for networking with multiple
frequencies, in order to ensure maximum network

performance, reduce interference, and enhance fast

availability and user experience. For example, Pakistan
operator, Mobilink recently adopted a multiple
frequency networking strategy, and even a six-frequency
networking mode was adopted in some regions,
thus, allowing them to achieve faster user growth.
The interference of the entire network is small, even
at points where there are overlapping areas of cells.
Moreover, the carrier to interference-plus-noise ratio
(CINR) is reasonable, even in areas with weak signals.
So, all of these positive aspects are contributing to make
each user’s experience better.

smart wireless surveillance
By Jin Can

F
rost & Sullivan forecasts that the
total revenue from the IP video
surveillance market will reach
2 billion USD in 2009, and
that the compound annual growth rate
(CAGR) will remain at least 40% up to
2012. This huge development potential
can be explained by the fact that video
surveillance is penetrating increasing
numbers of fields.
Umpires and referees are often unable to
accurately call decisions in sporting events,
and on-site video surveillance is invaluable
in mitigating bad or contentious decisions.
For example, China Mobile used WiMAX
to transmit video coverage for 2008
Olympic Regatta. The technology was not
only used to collect data and competition
results, but it also contributed significantly
to guarantee event security.
Wireless video backhaul represents a
breakthrough in WiMAX application by
providing a series of services including
mobile security surveillance, mobile video
conferencing, and high speed Internet
access.
Video surveillance has hit the
mainstream in recent years as society
places a growing emphasis on security. The
range of remote video surveillance required
by organizations has extended from
traditional security surveillance that is
common in enterprises such as banks. For
example, it is now often applied to help
manage production and operations for
businesses, monitor traffic, and safeguard
home security.
