Paper Recycling

Creating Wealth from Waste!!

Technology and Action for Rural Advancement

Process of Paper making
Chemicals like Chlorine,
24,000 gallons
NaOH etc are used
of water used
up!!! ZnS, Titanium oxide

Effluent is a
major polluter

For every ton of paper,

the paper industry uses
2.8 tons of dry timber!!

Technology and Action for Rural Advancement

Impacts
• Loss of forest cover
• Loss of biodiversity
• Soil erosion and loss of fertility
• Reduced forest access for local people
• Conventional pollutants like BOD, COD, TSS
• Effluents from bleaching process
• Additives like dyes
• End of life waste - high Methane emissions
due to anaerobic decomposition of paper
waste.

Need of Paper recycling …..

• Saving Paper is Saving trees!!

• If each child saves 1 sheet of

paper a day, then 40,000 trees
are saved per year by students !!

Technology and Action for Rural Advancement

One ton of recycled paper
uses:
• 64% less energy
• 50% less water
• 74% less air pollution
• Reduces chemicals
utilization
• Saves 17 trees
• Creates 5 times more jobs
• Reduces garbage

Technology and Action for Rural Advancement

Importance of recycling
• 6 trees for life–giving oxygen, soil and
water
• 3 years of cooking fuel for one village
family
• 25 years’ drinking water for one person
• 1 square foot of land for a waste dump
site
• 1 month’s income for 20 village people

Output
With this plant one can recycle 36 kg of waste
(paper) per day and 180 Kg per week. This
should translate into 135 kgs of paper per week,
which means 2700 sheets per week and
1,40,000 sheets per annum. If we assume the
cost of sheet is Rs. 3.50, than total realization
would be Rs. 4.90 Lacs per annum, which is
more/equivalent to the expenditure made
during the financial year. So, the total cost
incurred per annum can be recovered easily
