PRESSURE-TEMPERATURE RATINGS 3.1 Pressure-temperature ratings for the various classes of valves are shown in Table 1. Metric units (bar) are shown in Table BI in AnnexB. The ratings specified are for valves with metal-to-metal seating surfaces. Pressure-temperature ratings for valves with non-metallicseat materials must be limited to reflect the physical characteristics of these materials at each temperature, and may be lower but in no case higher than the values shown in Tables 1 and B 1. 3.2 The temperatureshown for the corresponding rating shah be the metal temperatureof the pressure retaining parts. It shall be assumed that the metal temperaturewill be the temperature of the contained fluid. Use ofa pressure ratingat a metal temperature other than that of the contained fluid shall be the responsibility of the user.

I . 1 This standard practicecoverscast valves with flanged or threaded ends.

1.2 These valves are suitable within the sizes and pressure-temperature ratings specifiedherein for general purpose service. 1.3 This standard practice also includes, directly or by reference, stipulations on chemical and physical properties of materials, and dimensions of end connections in common use. 2. VALVE DESIGNATION, CLASSES AND SIZES 2.1 Valve Types. Valve types covered herein are illustrated in FiguresA 1, A2, A3, A4, A5,and A6 in Annex A. MATERIALS 4.1General. This standard practice is intended to cover minimum physical and chemical requirements. Materials of superior mechanical properties may be substituted. Users are cautioned against applications withfluidswhichmayreactchemicallywithany materials used in these valves. Consultation with the manufacturer is advised to determine suitability in cases of doubt.

(c) Bolts, studs or cap screws shall be threaded in accordance withASME B1.1, Coarse thread series, Class 2A.

(c) Stem seals not requiring a gland, but suitable for the service conditions, may be furnished.

5.5 Yokes - Outside Screw and Yoke (OS & Y ) . Yokes on bonnets may be integral or of bolted-on construction.

5.6 Wedge and Disc Guides and Disc Spreading Device be guided to ensure that (a) Wedge discs shall the seating surfaces of the wedgewill not touch the body seat surfaces until near the point of closure.
(b) Double discs shall be provided with guides or linkage or disc spreading devices between the gates or a combination of these which will hold the gates in proper relation with each other and the stem, and will prevent the seating surfacesfrom rubbing against the body or bonnet during operation.

5.9 Gland Bolting. Studs, stud bolts, hinge bolts or headed bolts through drilled or slotted holes in the stuffing box flangemay be used. In all cases, gland bolting shall be securely held in place and shall provide adequate adjustment for progressive compression of packing material.
5.10 Backseat. Valves shall be designed to have a backseat. Repacking under pressure is hazardous and is not recommended.
5.11

Stems (a) The upper end of outside screw and yoke valve stems and the lower end of non-rising valve stems shall be threaded with single or multiple Acmetype thread, or U e g r e e thread approximating the stub form, precision cut to fit the engaging member. (b) Outside screw and yoke stems shall be of sufficient length so as to be at least flush with the top of the yoke nut after the disc wedging has been worn into its lowest position. The design shall be such as to prevent any possibility of the wedge or disc leaving the stem, or the stem turning during the operation of the valve. (c) Non-rising stem gate valves having separate stem engaging members shall be so designed as to prevent rotation or pulling out of the disc or wedge.

(c) Body guides shall be cast integral with the body except that NPS 16 (DN400) and larger may have separate guides of bronze or other bearing material securely fasteded to the body. All guide surfacesshall be smooth and true. (d)Selection of materialfordiscspreading devices shall be the manufacturers option.

5.7 Seating Surfaces (a) Disc seating surfaces may be integral or may beseparate rings securely fastened to the disc.
(b) Body seats shall be separate rings, either shoulder or bottom seated, except that alliron valve seats may beintegral with the body casting at the manufacturers option. Driving lugs mayprotrude into and reduce port area.
5.8

5.12 Handwheels. Handwheels shall be of the spoke type only. Webbed or disc type are not permissible.Handwheelsshall be markedwith the direction of movement for opening of the valve. 5.13 Bypass and Drain Connections. Unless otherwisespecified, bypassand drain connections shall be in accordance withMSS SP-45.

Glands (a) Glands may be threaded or bolted type. (b) Bolted glands may be solid, solid-bushed, or two-piecedself aligning design. Use of open bolt slots in glands shall not be permitted unless hinge bolts are used.

YORKMANSHIP
6 . 1 General. Valve parts shall be designed and manufacturing tolerances set so as to provide interchangeability in the product of any one manufacturer of the same size, class, type, and design, between units except the individual fitof the wedge or disc in the body.
6.2 Castin All castings shall be cleanandsound without efects which will impair their servi. No plugging, impregnation, welding or repairing of such defects w l i be allowed.

maximum service pressure for which the valve is rated. Test pressure shall be applied successively on each side of the closed gate, and the opposite side checked for leakage. As an alternate method for double disc valves, the pressure may be applied inside the bonnet or body with the discs closed and both sideschecked for leakage. The maximum permissible leakage rate on each seat shall be 10 milliliters per hour per inch of diameter of nominal valve size (.O7 mm3/sec x DN). Test pressures shall be held for periods specified in Table 3. TABU 3 -TEST DURATION, SECONDS, MINIMUM
