TUJUAN : Students should be able to use language for interpersonal purposes and pronounce targeted vocabulary clearly and accurately. Students should be able to talk about plans and make arrangements using specific language functions for specific social events, respond to questions politely by giving required informantion and ask questions, make decisions and suggest ways to solve problems related to an event appropriately.

To enable students to use English effectively for social communication, they need to practice performing other functions in English. Some commonly used functions are asking permission, asking for information and making a request. Other functions are asking for clarification, apologizing and giving instructions. In this unit, students will be introduced to a few activities to help students develop their skills in performing these language functions. 1. Forms and functions 1.1. To ask for permission i) Can I borrow your book? ii) May I borrow your book? iii) Do you mind if I borrow your book? iv) Is it ok if I borrow your book? 1.2. To ask for information i) Where is the library? ii) Can I know where the library is? iii) Excuse me, do you mind telling me where the library is? iv) Do you know where the library is? 1.3. To make a request i) Could you give me a cup of coffee? ii) May I have a cup of coffee please? iii) Would you be so kind to give me a cup of coffee please? 1.4. 2. Answering techniques This unit will be tested in section B (Part 1) of the exam. This section carries 5 marks. Students will be given situation and a dialogue. 2.1. Read the question and the dialogue. 2.2. Understand the situation in which the conversation is taking place. 2.3. Refer to the function given on the left hand margin. 2.4. Use the words given in brackets to write a sentence that fits the function. 2.5. Do not change the form of the words given in the brackets. 2.6. Read the conversation to make sure that your answer fits and that the dialogue reads smoothly.
