10 Common Questions People Ask About ASD

What is ASD?
This is the question you will be faced with most often. By having your script prepared with a definition and
real life example, you will be able to answer this question easily.

What causes ASD?

The cause of ASD is unknown. It is a neurological disorder that is present from birth. Research suggests
that ASD is caused by a combination of factors such as an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, genetics,
environment, and a physical problem with the parts of the brain that affect information coming in from the
senses.

How are people diagnosed with ASD?

ASD is diagnosed using a variety of different measures and screening tools. Parents, doctors, teachers, or
family members often notice developmental differences between the child and his or her peers and will
have the child tested.

Is autism contagious?
No. Autism is a neurological condition and is not contagious.

Can ASD be cured?

There is currently no cure for ASD, but there are treatments.

Do people die from ASD?

No.

What are treatments for ASD?

There are many different therapies available to help people with ASD learn new skills and overcome
behavioral challenges. Research suggests that early intervention – or therapy that starts as soon as possible
after diagnosis – is associated with positive outcomes for people with ASDs. One common evidence-based
therapy is Applied Behavior Analysis, which uses positive reinforcement to reward desirable behaviors.
Many families develop intensive treatment plans that are highly specialized to the needs of the child.

Can people with ASD have jobs?
It is possible for people with ASD to have jobs. ASD occurs across a spectrum, affecting people to different
degrees. Some people are nonverbal and need daily care throughout their lives. Others are able to obtain
and hold down jobs. In some instances, coworkers may not even know that the person has ASD.

Can children with ASD be in regular classrooms?

Children with ASD are often in the same classroom as neurotypical students. Since ASD occurs across a

skills he or she may have been lacking prior to that interaction.
