The Mind: Leading Scientists Explore the Brain, Memory, Personality, and Happiness. New York: Harper Perennial, 2011. Print. This source covers subjects such as the brain, consciousness, and neurosciences. Edited by John Brockman, the book is a compilation of contributions by several leading scientists on topics that range from the rescue of memory and the neurology of self-awareness to how memory influences personality. Despite focusing primarily on the topic of the mind, the specific fields that the text goes through are rather comprehensive. The context that this book was written in is largely from a scientific, though simultaneously conversational and easily understandable, perspective. As this book is a collection of different studies written by different scientists on different subjects about mind, the compilation of such essays conveys an objective point of view with no single, specific argument to guide the general direction of the text. Although this source does address many aspects of memory thoroughly, it is only tangentially important to my subject, which is mostly concerned with research conducted in order to understand the human brain. Nevertheless, it contains topics that give a holistic view of the various functions of memory and the ways in which memory influences the individual. This insight could potentially be useful, as I may want to pursue a discussion of how memory influences personality and identity in my paper. Parts I may consider using include Seligmans essay on happiness, Lakoffs take on the mind and reasoning, and Ramachandrans response to the subject of self.

"The Machine of a New Soul." Editorial. The Economist n.d.: n. pag. Economist.com. 3 Aug. 2013. Web. 24 Nov. 2013. This article published in an issue of The Economist focuses on neuromorphic engineering, which in laymens terms is creating a computer with human brain capabilities of learning and reacting. Specifically, neuromorphic engineers wish to create a computing system with the 3 main advantages the human brain has over current computers: low power consumption, fault tolerance, and a lack of need to be programmed. To accomplish this, scientists must first learn how the brain functions, and researchers in Europe are working on developing the worlds first supercomputer model of the brain. The coveted seat of consciousness is what Europes Human Brain Project and Obamas BRAIN initiative are seeking to discover, and hopefully emulate in future technology. The article then goes into detail about other various projects that are being funded to research the possible creation of computer models of the brain. It concludes with the author musing the possibility that, if developed, this technology could potentially backfire with the

creation of an intelligence superior to that of our own. The article is generally supportive of the previously referred to research projects, though for the most part, the tone remains objective. Much of the information in this article can be used in my paper.

Lewis, Tanya. "President's Brain Initiative Gets a Shot in the Arm." NBC News. N.p., 22 Nov. 2013. Web. 25 Nov. 2013. This article originally published on LiveScience.com by Tanya Lewis describes President Obamas BRAIN Initiative, a project similar to Europes Human Brain Project that seeks to create the worlds first supercomputer-run model of the human brain. The White Houses ambitious project has been likened to the Human Genome Project, a grueling, heavily funded undertaking that has had an abundance of benefits such as customized, more effective medicine for cancer patients. This project is funded by DARPA, NIH, and NSF, and is receiving a total of 232 million dollars to get started. The project has been criticized as being unrealistically ambitious by some, and has also come under fire by critics who are unhappy about the lack of a clear set of objectives. This article states that more knowledge of the brain will help us reach a cure for Alzheimers as well as other diseases quicker. The projects two main priorities in terms of the defense agency are better treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders and memory restoration. An interim report was released on September 16 this year that elucidates the nature of this scientific mission. The article provides basic information that can be used in my paper; ultimately, it illustrates the fact that the leaders of America as well as Europe strongly believe that understanding the brain will be an invaluable asset to society and that they are actively pursuing that goal.
