Adam & Eve 1

Waking up: Who am I?

Bible Passage: Genesis 1: 1- 2:7 Bible Truth: Man is the only part of creation that God chose to bear his image Lesson Objective: That students realize the honor of being chosen to bear God's image and desire to reflect that image well What you need: magazines and or newspapers! glue! scissors! blan" sheets of paper for each student! colored pens or pencils! #ibles! copies of the handout! pencils! a mirror Opening $rrange your chairs in a circle or around a table and put the magazines! newspapers! scissors! glue! and colored pens or pencils on the floor or table in the middle of the circle $fter an opening prayer e%plain that each student will ha&e 1' minutes to ma"e a collage which describes themsel&es through pictures (images) or words To help them understand show them a collage about yourself that you ha&e prepared ahead of time (remember that yours will be the model that the students will imitate so ma"e it descripti&e of you as a person ) #riefly e%plain about yourself through the pictures and words and then gi&e each student a blan" sheet of paper *hile they ma"e their collages you should wal" around the room encouraging them Interactive Learning $fter the 1' minutes ha&e passed and the ma+ority of the students ha&e finished their collages ha&e each student e%plain to the group about their collage ,f your group is large! di&ide into as many small groups as necessary to ha&e less than eight people per group Ma"e sure that e&eryone listens to the others and than" each person after they share about themsel&es
Today we begin a study of Adam and Eve and we meet them as they are just waking up and trying to understand the world around them. As we have seen in these collages each person in this room is unique. We all have different personalities, different likes and dislikes, different talents and abilities, different strengths and weaknesses. This variety is wonderful and who we are is a gift from od. !ut we all have something in common" the incredible honor of being made in the image of od. This is a concept that may seem hard to understand so let#s go to the !ible and see if it can help us understand better who we are

Bible !pplication -i&ide the students into four groups (if your group is bigger than 2. people! di&ide into more groups and gi&e the scripture passages to more than one group ) Gi&e one of the following passages to each of the four groups: 1) Genesis 1:1-1/! 2) Genesis 1: 2'-2.! 0) Genesis 1:21-2:1! 2) Genesis 2: 2-7 3%plain that each group has fi&e minutes to read the &erses and then plan a s"it to act out their &erses for the group 3mphasize that all group members must participate in their s"it! e&en if they're only a tree or the moon4 3ncourage them to be creati&e and use their imagination *hen the ma+ority of the groups are ready to perform (or when you need to mo&e on because of the time) ha&e each group present their s"it in order according to their scripture passage 5ollowing the s"its as" the following 6uestions and get se&eral responses a &ariety of students:
What differences did you notice about the way od created different things$ (the students may not notice the following so after they gi&e some answers point out : in chapter 1 God said 7let 8 happen7 for e&erything but man #ut when he created man he said! 79et us ma"e man in our image7 and then 7created7 man: in ch 2 it says God 7made7 the earth and hea&ens but 7formed7 man and 7breathed the breath of life7 into him ) What do you think it means that man is made in the image and likeness of od$ %ow is man different from the sun, moon, and stars$ (he is ali&e! a person with a mind and emotions who can ha&e
relationships)

%ow is man different from the birds, fish, and animals$ (he doesn;t +ust act from instinct but can reason and ma"e
decisions: man was told by God to rule o&er the animals and the world)

These things that make us distinct from the heavenly bodies and the animals help us understand what the &image of od& in us is. !ut obviously, we are not od. 'n what specific ways are we different from od$ (he is infinite! we're finite: he "nows e&erything! is e&erywhere! is all-powerful! has no beginning and no end and we're
none of those: <e is pure spirit while we ha&e a spirit and a body)

"ommitment =oint out how they ha&e +ust e%plained the basics of what it means that we are made in the 7image of God7! highlighting and restating correct obser&ations that they ha&e made (5or e%ample! we are li&ing beings
that ha&e a mind so we don't +ust act according to our instincts but we can analyze a situation and act based on our reasoning and our will )

Gi&e each student a copy of the handout and a pen or pencil! and e%plain that it is possible to summarize aspects of the image of God in si% primary areas as listed on the sheet: =ersonal> ?elational! 3motional! ?ational! @olitional! Moral! Areati&e! and ?ulers o&er Areation ?ead through the sheet together by as"ing a &olunteer to read the name! &erse! and e%planation of each category and then discuss each one until you feel that they understand what is being described
od demonstrates each one of these qualities perfectly, while as humans with our limitations and our sin we reflect %is image imperfectly. 't is like this mirror (hold up mirror with dirt or water spots or something to obscure the image on it and pass it around) the reflection that you see on it is not clear. !ecause the image of od is so beautiful, our desire is to reflect it as well as we can. *uring the ne+t few minutes ' want each of you to fill in a specific way that you can better reflect od in each of these areas. ,or e+ample, you can choose to live out good stewardship of the world by throwing your trash in a trashcan instead of on the ground.
B9eaders: here is an e%ample in each category in case the students ha&e trouble with this -on't read these to them +ust use them as e%tra help if needed =ersonal> ?elational--when someone does something that hurts me , will forgi&e them instead of getting them bac" 3motional-- *hen , get angry , won't ta"e it out on those around me ?ational--, will analyze difficult situations instead of +ust reacting to them @olitional--, will do what is right instead of what , feel li"e doing (if they are different ) Moral--*hen , lie to my parents , am sinning against God as well as them so , will as" forgi&eness from God and my parents Areati&e--Csing whate&er creati&e talent God has gi&en me for <is glory! not mine ?ulers o&er creation---, will ta"e care of the world around meD

Ma"e sure that the students write down their answers on the wor"sheet *hen they ha&e finished spend a few minutes hearing some e%amples of what they wrote down from each category "losing
Each and every one of us has been given the great honor of bearing od#s image. Those of us who have asked -esus to be our savior reflect od in an even more specific way as individuals and as a group because we are &the body of .hrist.& !ut we all know that we do not reflect that perfectly. We need od#s help. /o let#s take a few minutes to ask od to help us reflect him more clearly

Eption 1--the leader can pray as"ing God to help e&eryone in the room to reflect <is image Eption 2--Ftand up and ha&e e&eryone hold hands 3%plain that each person will as" God to help him or her in one of the specific areas they wrote down on their wor"sheet ,f they feel comfortable they can pray out loud! but if they prefer to pray silently they should s6ueeze the hand of the person ne%t to them to Gpass H
