An English woman, a German woman, two Aussies and an Irishman walked in to a room… two hours later, a small group
walked out… what happened in between?
Facilitated by Kate Collier, Jo, Elisabeth, Kerry, Jacqui and Damien established a group to assist in the
planning, of the inaugural E-BLA conference to be held December 7-9 2009. The key message is
To draw a parallel, the subject outline for Professional Practice 2 uses an action learning model for its
students to journey through the process and content of learning. For us a group, we know were we
are going, but how we get there is was not clear.
Process summary
The initial discussion ensued around the topic ‘what should we do next?’. This conversation
developed a general sense of ideas floating around about what we should do, typically with a
pragmatic/practical slant.
Moved onto what we should ask Kate with the formulation of a list of questions with a lot of
conversation ensuing. A key development for the group occurred at this point with Elisabeth taking a
marker and beginning to write on the white board what ideas were being generated. This drew the
group together in a central focus and slowed the conversation down to a pace and flow were each
idea could be considered before moving on.
A further key moment occurred when Kerrie instigated each of the group members to describe
themselves and their background in occupation and education.
The group returned to the process of deciding “how do we decide what we want?” Kate was asked
to join in at this point and a number of key questions were asked about the level of expectation for the
group from the E-BLA conference organisers. Again, Elisabeth wrote down ‘skills’ and a ‘want to do’
list with each member of the group volunteering to a specific task.
