Kailey Gowans 11-18-13 English 1010 Annotated Bibliography 1) Birthright Citizenship should not be Eliminated.

Opposing Viewpoints in Context, 2012. Web. 9 November 2013. This webpage acknowledges how dysfunctional the immigration system is and how many illegal immigrants there are in the United States. Then it mentions anchor children and how so many U.S. citizens rely on being born in America to say they are citizens. So some people think that birthright citizenship should be eliminated and also if birthright citizenship was eliminated it would create many problems for most Americans. Immigration into America is extremely complex. Finding out if someone is a citizen without Birthright proof is very expensive and the lawyers who can untangle the citizenship mess are rare. Life would become extremely difficult for those who needed to prove their citizenship if the birthright citizenship was eliminated. It would hurt America and Americans more than it would help them and wouldnt help solving the immigration problem at all. 2) Introduction to the Children of Undocumented Immigrants: at Issues. Opposing Viewpoints in Context, 2013. Web. 9 November 2013. According to this webpage there are hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants. Many of those immigrants have children that were born in the U.S. So while it is easy to deport the parents, the children are citizens because they were born in America which makes it harder to deport the parent. The children of these parents also have identity crises from being told that they are illegal immigrants when they know that they were born in America. Because of the children

states and the government are relaxing the laws on illegal immigrants and their children. The American Legislation opposes the Dream Act saying that it is unfair and a poor use of taxpayer dollars. This web page also says that there are many pros and cons to the Dream Act, but that while congress is debating over them thousands of illegal immigrant children are caught in the middle. 3) Younglai, Rachelle and Cowan, Richard. House Republicans favor helping children of illegal immigrants. REUTERS, 23 July 2013. Web. 9 November 2013. Republicans decided that action needs to be taken with illegal immigrant children. They want to legalize the children. They think that it isnt their fault that they are illegal just because of their parents. Some think that this is a great idea, but others think that this is rewarding the lawbreakers by giving them a route to citizenship. They all think that the immigration system is messed up. Then they address the problem of children born outside the U.S. with American citizen parents. They believe that those children should be considered U.S. citizens. Especially those who have a parent serving in the military. 4) Dream Act:Summary. National Immigration Law Center. May 2011. Web. 9 November 2013. Most children would be deported with their parents, however, this law argues that to deport the children would be unfair since their illegal status is inherited from their parents. This website explains another option, besides deportation, is available. They could apply for temporary citizenship and later on apply for permanent citizenship. It tells who would qualify for the Dream act and what the requirements would be for them. It also addresses the problem of immigration tuition if a child grew up in state and became a permanent or temporary citizen. That child would be able to go to a college without paying the out of state tuition.

5) Cohen, Tom. Obama administration to stop deporting some illegal immigrants. CNN. 16 June 2012. Web. 12 November 2013. Obama says that he will stop deporting illegal immigrant children if they meet certain requirements. Latino people are singing his praises and congress hates him. They are saying that he is taking away their authority. Obama says that this is a path to citizenship not amnesty, immunity, or a permanent fix. He also says that this is the right thing to do when he was challenged with a hostile question. Last year America had the largest number of illegal immigrants deported in Americas history. 6) Would the Dreamer Amnesty Benefit the Economy? Federation For American Immigration Reform. 2013. Web. 12 November 2013. This website believes that the Dream Act would add millions of dollars to the economy. It believes that if illegal immigrants were allowed to stay in the country that they would work lower paying jobs. It also points out that those who do not qualify for the Dream Act would likely still remain in their illegal status. It also points out that Americas immigration laws and policies are really complicated and difficult to comprehend. This website believes that the Dream act is adding to the amnesty attitude that most people seem to have towards illegal immigrants. 7) Orchowski, Peggy. Children of Illegal Immigrants Caught in Educational Politics Crossfire. News Opinion, U.S.News. 9 August 2010. Web. 12 November 2013. The Dream Act is back. High School and College students were marching for it and getting arrested. This website asks if people truly know what the Dream Act is. It quotes what some people say it is then tells the full story. The Dream act allows those who came before they were 16 to stay in America and go to school. They must fulfil a few requirements, but they can go to

college and become temporary citizens. This website believes that most people dont know or care about the details of the Dream Act and lists reasons why it wont pass. 8) Dreby, Joanna. How Todays Immigration Enforcement Policies Impact Children, Families, and Communities. Immigration, Center For American Progress. 20 August 2012. Web. 12 November 2013. The United States has not passed any reform laws to make immigration easier or illegal immigration harder. Instead they cracked down on illegal immigrants which affects a lot of people. One effect of deportation is families being ripped apart. When families are ripped apart they put a lot of children in foster care and leave many mothers single and struggling to raise their young children. Deportation also affects communities. Families live in constant fear of being deported. Children grow up afraid of police. Children begin to think that all immigrants are illegal. The website recommends some changes. 9) Shields, Margie K. Behrman, Richard E. Journal Issue:Children of Immigrant Families.

Journals (Volume 14 Number 2), The Future of Children. 2004. Web. 13 November 2013. The children of immigrants face many challenges that others may not. Their parents are less educated because few have access to good education. Because the parents are not citizens they are far more likely to get low-wage jobs. Language barriers cause problems because immigrant parents will get lower wages while children and parents have trouble communicating. Immigrants and their children will likely be discriminated against and may be subject to racism. The rates for poverty and risk are higher in immigrant families than in non-immigrant families. In addition, it is harder for immigrant families to gain support; the government put limitations on welfare and other low-income family support for immigrants.

10) Preston, Julia. Court Ruling Help Illegal Immigrants College-Bound Children. The New York Times. 5 September 2012. Web. 13 November 2013. Some states with financial problems cut down on education and immigration help, but now the courts are cracking down on how much states can cut down or deny illegal immigrant children and families benefits. A young American whose parents were illegal immigrants was unable to prove his parents are American citizens so his college tuition went up and his scholarship was cut in half. He sued the college. The court ruled that the reasons were unconstitutional so he won. This newspaper says that legally the issue is straightforward. The children are citizens because they were born on American soil. Many people are angry because if someones parents are illegal it reflects badly on the children who are citizens. 11) Scruggs, Mike. A Republican Dream Act for Illegal Immigrant Children? The Tribune Papers. 11 August 2013. Web. 13 November 2013. The Dream Act looks good when you first look at it, but if you look closer it is a national security nightmare with people from who knows where coming in to do who knows what. We would have to pay for them with taxpayer dollars when we could be using them to make roads better or pay off the national debt. The immigration law changes that have been proposed dont work. The media and government are providing Americans with little information on immigration so they cannot make informed opinions. Those who want the Dream Act dont see the big picture. They dont pay attention to the possible after effects of the Dream Act because it would likely wreck any immigration control. Since no thought is really being put into the after effects it could have huge flaws that we couldnt fix later. 12) Howell, Tom Jr. House panel looks at ways to help children of illegal immigrants. Politics, The Washington Times. 23 July 2013. Web. 13 November 2013.

Republicans try to reform immigration laws step-by-step. People say that the children of illegal immigrants should not be punished for their parents actions. Many of those children dont know anything besides the United States. The Republicans believe that the children should be able to earn their citizenship through Military service, academic success, etc... Democrats are not satisfied, arguing back that families can still be separated. So they are working to find something that works piece by piece to solve the problem.
