To Maryland's Music Educators:
Welcome back to another school year. While school has been out of session for the summer and
many of you have been traveling, spending time with family, or involved with curriculum projects,
camps, professional development, and other endeavors, the Maryland Music Educators Association
Executive Board members have been working very hard to plan all the important music events for
the coming school year. I encourage you to carefully read the material in this handbook, and mark
the dates on your calendars and electronic devices so both you and your students are certain not to
miss these opportunities.
All State Ensembles: As you begin the school year, start to think about which students in your
ensemble may be ready to represent your program in an All State ensemble. Send in those names
and do your best to prepare these students for the audition. As they grow as musicians through
the preparation and audition process, they not only improve as individuals, but they will then
bring back valuable insights and skills to your program as well. Think of it as a win-win scenario,
one that plays itself out time and time again as you and your students engage in MMEA-spon-
sored events. The state organization also needs music teachers to offer their time and talents as
audition judges and helpers with the various All State events. Contact your component president
and let them know you are interested in assisting with these events, because you want to give
back to your profession and your professional organization in this way. We all benefit when our
membership is engaged and involved.
Fall In-Service Day: MMEA has spent a lot of time preparing outstanding professional devel-
opment opportunities at our Fall In-Service Day and the Annual In-Service Conference in
February, and you will not want to miss either. The networking and professional development
opportunities are extremely valuable in navigating our complex and challenging profession.
These are just two opportunities that your state organization provides for each of us; they can
help us become stronger music educators and advocates, and be better connected with our pro-
fessional music education community. Plan to attend and bring a colleague. If you are bringing
a 1 st or 2nd year teacher, be sure they realize the lunch is complimentary for them, and plan to
stay for lunch yourself (at the nominal fee) to support the teachers who are new to the profession
or new to Maryland. The collegiate members are included in the complimentary lunch as well.
The Fall In-Service Day is a great day to catch up with friends and fellow music educators and
"sharpen the saw," as Stephen Covey would say (The 7 Habits o/Highly Effective People) . It also
makes excellent sense to pre-register so you can avoid long lines that might keep you from get-
ting to that first session on time. The registration form will be posted on the MMEA website and
will be in the fall issue of Maryland Music Educator.
Remember - MMEA works for all of us - but it works better for everyone when more of us get
involved and are active in state events and activities. Make sure your students know about and are
involved in the many music opportunities that our association has to offer. Attend both conferences,
help with All State auditions, AND, if you are not a member of MMEAINational Association for
Music Education (NAfME), go to the MMEA website at www.mmea-maryland.org, and click on
"Membership." Become a member and experience first hand what the organization can do for you,
and what you can do for your organization. We all win when we become involved.

All State Audition Information:
Read This First!
I
n Maryland, students have many opportunities to audition for
statewide groups; to perform in solo and ensemble events at the
District and State levels; and to take part in school bands, cho-
ruses and orchestras that perfornl for adjudication. Making those
opportunities available for your students can help "drive" the music
curriculum for you.
Take time now to note the deadline dates for All State groups for
students in grades 7 through 12 and for Solo and Ensemble events
for students in grades 6 through 12 (see calendar, inside back
cover). Maryland is one of the few states that do not charge for stu-
dent participation in these events. The nominal fee that is charged
for individual students who attend private or parochial school in
Maryland is to " level the field" for the chaperone expenses, rather
than impose the chaperone costs on t he selected students.
Take advantage of these opportunities for your students. Fill out
the All State applications and submit them on time. Look over the
audition requirements and assist your students in the process. It pays
off for every student in your class if even a few of your students are
strivi ng for a hi gher level of excellence. Their dedication, and
yours, will give new energy to the entire ensembl e.
All State Audition Information
Students must attend an independent (private), parochial, or public
school in Maryland and meet the class membership and grade desig-
nations to be eligible to participate. Check the Student Eligibi lity pol-
icy on the next page if there are questions. Remember that your sig-
nature and your principal' s signature attest to the eli gibility of the li st-
ed students as well as to the appropriate grade levels.
Because the events are on different weekends, a student in grades
7, 8, or 9 may audition for and participate in All State Junior Band
and either the All State Junior Chorus or All State Junior Orchestra,
if eligibility requirements have been met for both groups. Please
indicate such nominations on the fOlms so that such students will be
scheduled appropriately. MMEA requires a statement from both
music teachers, indicating that the student is aware of the added
pressure of prepari ng two auditions and is prepared for the possibil-
ity of being rejected twice.
Eligible students in grades 10 through 12 may audition for the All
State Jazz Band in addition to the All State Senior Band or
Orchestra. Teachers must complete the nomination process for
Senior Band or Orchestra AND the Video Tape authentication Foml
that accompanies the Video Taped Jazz Audition. (See Page 16.)
The deadline for the DVD auditions is Friday, December 13.

To meet the Friday, October 4, 2013, receipt deadline for Junior
Groups (Graders 7, 8 and 9), nominations should be mailed by
October 1 or shipped UPS on October 3. (Normal UPS delivery with-
in the state of Maryland is on the next day without any additional fee.)

To meet the Friday, October 11, 2013, date for receipt of Senior
groups (Grades 10, II and 12), nominations must be mailed by
October 8 or shipped UPS on October 10.

List no more than 10 students per form. Send as many forms as
needed. There is no limit on the number of students who may audi-
tion. Once you have completed the forms , photocopy them for your
records. SEND THE FORMS WITH ORIGINAL SIGNA-
TURES to the MMEA Office to be received by the deadline. The
late fee is $35.00 per student (late applications must be pre-
approved by the Execut ive Director).
No jazz audition DVD' s will be accepted after Friday, December
13, 2013. Late fees do not apply.
No nomination is accepted by FAX.
If you wish acknowledgment of receipt of the forms , include a
self-addressed postcard or envelope, with sufficient postage for
return to you.
All instrumental auditions (band and orchestra) are at Edgewood
High School in Harford County.
Choral auditions are at three sites across the state. (Anne Arundel,
Baltimore, and Frederick Counties) Make sure you check an
audition site on each choral form. Your students may audition at
different sites, but pl ease mark one site for each appli cation.
All Junior auditions are Saturday, November 16. All Senior audi-
tions are Saturday, November 23. Jazz auditions are on
video/DVD and are due on Friday, December 13. There are no
exceptions.
Late appli cations must be pre-approved by the Executive Director
and a fee of $35 per student must be included with the late appli-
cations.
Schedules for auditions and specific directions to the sites wi ll be
mailed to each nominating teacher.
The rehearsal/performance schedule of groups will be:
1. All State Junior Band, All State Senior Band and All State
Senior Orchestra, All State Senior Mixed Chorus, and All
State Senior Women's Choms, February 20-23, 2014,
Baltimore.
2. All State Junior Chorus and All State Junior Orchestra,
March 7-9, 2014, Towson.
3. All State Jazz Band, March 27-29, 2014, University of
Maryland, Baltimore County.
Fees for selected All State members will not exceed $350 per per-
son. All students will be housed two persons to a room.

The students who will be nominated in the spring of 2014 may
be notified of acceptance in the 2015 All Eastern ensemble
before the 2015 Maryland All State results are published. A stu-
dent will be disqualified from the All Eastern Ensemble unless
they participated in the Maryland ensemble in 2014 and audi-
tioned and made the accepted list for 2015. There are no excep-
tions to this policy.
All Festival Appli cation deadlines are deadlines for RECEIPT of
the fornls, not a postmark date.
For District and State Band, Chorus and Orchestra Festivals/
Assessments, only the Malyland State literature lists for Band, Chorus
and Orchestra may be used. For Distinct and State Wind and Percussion
and String Solo and Ensemble Festivals, only the Malyland lists may
be used with two exceptions: Guitar solos and harp solos may be select-
ed from a NYSSMA Manual published within the past 10 years (2003
and fOlward; manuals published evelY 3 years). For District and State
Vocal Solo and Ensemble Festivals, the NYSSMA Manual may con-

Teachers should be the source of information. Students are not to be
given the numbers.

Student Eligibility for MMEA State-Wide Activities
Mmyland Music Educators Association (MMEA) is a professional association of music educators who teach in Maryland public and
private schools and colleges. Its purpose is to promote the advancement of music education in Malyland schools. It does this by sup-
porting and enhancing school music curricula. Its first two corporate purposes deal with teacher in-service.
MMEA also sponsors state-wide student activiti es which are grade and class (band, chorus, orchestra) specific. The activities adhere
to guidelines establi shed by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), of which MMEA is a state affiliate. Prior to 1980,
only students of MMEA members were allowed to participate in any state-wide activities. Currently, by agreement with the Public
School Superintendents Association of Maryland (PSSAM ), students of MMEA members and students of non-members are eligibl e
to participate in state-wide activities according to the following policies:
I. Only students enrolled in band, chorus or orchestra classes in Maryland public and private schools in the appropriate grade desig-
nation may audition for and participate in state-wide activities.
2. Only the music teacher who teaches the specific band, chorus, or orchestra class may initiate the application process for his or her
students to audition for or participate in state-wide activities.
3. All applications must be signed by the school principal, attesting to the el igibility of the listed students as members of the specific
cl asses.
4. Students in high schools in which alternate scheduling models are in operation are eligible to participate in state-wide activities only
in the years in which they receive a full credit for those classes.
5. Regardless of their musical abi li ty, students who choose not to participate in their school band, chorus, or orchestra class for any
reason are not eli gible to participate in MMEA state-wide activities in the years in which they are not part of their school ensembles.

Requirements
Students must attend an independent (private), parochial, or public

Each director is responsible for seeing that each student has prepared
the audition music and scales as described and at the tempi given.
20132014 Junior Band
To participate in the Maryland All State Junior Band, a student must
attend an independent (private), parochial, or public school in
Maryland, must be in grades 7, 8, or 9, and must be in a band class.
20132014 Senior Band and Orchestra Winds & Percussion
To participate in the Maryland All State Senior Band, a student
must attend an independent (private), parochial , or public school in
Maryland, must be in grades 10, 11 , or 12, and must be in a band
class. In senior high schools in which an alternative scheduling pro-
gram is operating, the student may paI1icipate in the year in which he
or she earns a full credit. Any questions should be directed to the
Executive Director by the teacher at the numbers provided in the
front of this publication. Students and parents are not to call.
All State Junior and Senior Band Auditions
WINDS:
There will be two judges in each room. Scores of the two judges
in each room will be averaged. Clarinets, flutes, trumpets, and sax-
ophones may be sent to a finals room after the first audition. If a stu-
dent is to go to the finals room, the preliminary room judges will
issue the student a "Finals Room Pass." Those students will then go
the registration desk to sign up for the Finals Room.
Scales:
o Each student will be asked to perform the chromatic scale,
beginning on a note of the student's choosing, and one major
scale for their instrument, selected from the following keys:
C, F, G, D, A, E, B-Flat, E-Flat, A-Flat.
o The scales must be perfonned from memory.
o Scales will be selected by the adjudicator according to the
level of the selecti on being perf01111ed.
o The scales are to be played evenly and smoothly in a 16th
note patte111 at a metronome speed of quarter = 72.
o All scales are to be pl ayed ascending and descending a mini-
mum of one octave, except Flute and Soprano Clar inet, who
shall perform the scales a minimum of two octaves.
Required Music:
o Required music: See required music list. Only an excerpt will
be perfoll11ed. The entire piece will not be required.
o The excerpts of the required pieces will be posted in the
wa1111-up room and at the entrance to each audition room.
o No student may audition on more than one instnllnent (except
for flute/piccolo, oboe/English h0111 and Eb Clarinet/Bb
Clarinet). Flute players wishing to be considered for piccolo
parts, oboe players wishing to be considered for English hom
parts, and clarineti sts wi shing to be considered for Eb
Clarinet parts should bring those instruments with them to the
audition and will be asked to demonstrate their proficiency on
those instruments.
In the event that a student arrives at the audition with the
incorrect audition music prepared, the student will be given
the correct music and up to an hour to prepare the correct
musi c before the audition.
Sight Reading:
Sight reading will be required.

2013-2014 All State Junior and Senior Percussion Requirements
The percussionists will be required to perform on snare drum, keyboard percussion,
timpani, bass drum, crash cymbals and tambourine.
Sight reading on snare drum, keyboard percussion and timpani will be required.
Scores of all the instruments will be averaged together.
Percussion instruments provided at the audition are a (minimum) four-octave marimba,
xylophone, four timpani, snare drum, tambourine, crash cymbals, and a concert bass
drum. A bass drum mallet (or mallets) will be provided.
Students may elect to bring their own snare drum, tambourine, crash cymbals and/or bass
drum mallets.
All percussionists are expected to provide their own snare drum sticks, keyboard mallets,
timpani mallets, and a pitch source (tuning fork, pitch pipe) for tuning the timpani.
Although there is more than one acceptable technique that can be used for their
performance, students sometimes use improper techniques, which result in a less than
optimal musical effect. The adjudicators have the right to lower scores for the use of
improper techniques.
Students are to follow the provided audition requirements and play the musical examples
exactly as printed on the page. Any deviation from the printed music will result in lower
scores.

Eligibility Requirements
A student must attend an independent (private), parochial, or pub-
lic school in Maryland, be in grades 10, ll, or 12, and must be
enrolled in and be active participants in their school band, orchestra
or jazz ensemble, in order to be eligibl e to participate in the All State
auditions. Students who do not participate in their school band or
orchestra program are not eligible. Teachers with questions about
eligibility should contact the MMEA Executive Director at the num-
bers provided at the front of this publication.
Audition Procedure/Video Tape/DVD Submission
Requirements:
Audition for the 2013 - 2014 All State Jazz Band will be submit-
ted on videotape or DVD. Students may audit ion for the Senior
Band, Orchestra, or Chorus and Jazz Band. (If a student is selected
for two groups, he/she will be able to perfonn in both ensembles!)
Directors must submit a nomination/tape authentication form with
each videotape/DVD for jazz audition to be received by December
13, 2013. Directors must submit a nomination form for each event
for which a student is auditioning by the deadline. School music
directors are to supervise the audition recording process and
review each video tapelDVD before submission. Please refer to the
2013 - 2014 All State Jazz Band Video Recording Authentication
Form for recording process guidelines.
Audition Requirements
It is the director's responsibility to provide parts to the following
audition selections. If a teacher is unable to provide needed selec-
tions to the students, please call the MMEA office for assistance in
obtaining the auditi on music. Students must perform the require-
ments in the following order:
1. Scales: C Major, A Major, Eb Major, Gb Major, C Melodic
Minor, Ab Hannonic Minor
(Set players are not required to play scales.)
2. Prepared Piece #1: "IND Line" Jazz Etude - half note = 90, Jim
Snidero's Jazz Conception Series published by Advance Music.
This etude will be played in its entirety, as written, without ben-
efit of the accompanying CD or a metronome device. (Refer to
individual instrument listing for excerpts to be perforn1ed.)
3. Prepared Piece #2: "Granada Smoothie" composed by Mark
Taylor, Hal Leonard Professional Editions, HL 34307010-
half note = 138 (Refer to indi vidual instrument listing for
excerpts to be perfOlmed.)
4. Improvisation: Nothing But The Blues, Number 10, Fast
Blues in F, from New Approach to Jazz Improvisation Volume
2, by Jamey Aebersold. Students should perforn1 improvised
solos with the audio track (included in Aebersold book) play-
ing in the background.
Note: Improvisation is not required; however, students who impro-
vise will earn more points than students who do not attempt
improvisation. Set players are exempt fi-om this requirement.
5. Rhythm Section Groove Requirements:
Warning: Metronome use to establi sh each tempo is pennitted,
however students/directors must turn off the metronome before
st31iing the groove. Students must not have ear buds/head-
phones on during this portion (or any portion of the audition).
Acoustic/String and/or Electric Bass, Piano, Guitar, and
Vibraphone Comping: (Note: Comping is jazz slang for
accompaniment: in other words, the hannonic and rhythmic
support provided by the piano, bass, guitar and vibraphone.)

styles and tempi in the order listed below (chord subst itu-
tions and standard variations on the blues progression are
highly recommended):

RECORDING PROCESS GUIDELINES
The following procedures must be followed to submit a videotape or DVD:
School music directors are to supervise the audition recording process in the school band room, and review the DVD/video tape
before submission. (Choose a neutral backdrop, one that does 110t display the name or mascot of the school)
Use a DVD or standard VHS T-1 20 videotape; a good quality tape is recommended . Videotapes and DVDs will not be returned.
Must be recorded at standard play speed (SP).
Only one student audition per tape or DVD.
Only use internal camera microphones. May be stereo or mono audio but no enhancements will be allowed (i.e. no reverb, no
delay).
May not use headphones, mp3 players/iPods TM, metronomes, supplemental /additional microphones, or background recordings.
(Background accompaniments should be used for improvisation only.)
If using videotape, a minimum of thirty seconds of space/silence from beginning of the recording with the recording running is
required. If using a DVD, no leading wait time is required.
The student will state his or her first name only and the section or part for whi ch he or she is auditioning (lead part or section part).
Each DVD/tape and DVD case/tape box must be labeled with ONLY the student's first name and instrument.
The recording is to be done in one continuous take and the signed form attesti ng to that requirement must accompany the tape or
DVD.
A date and time stamp must be visi ble at all times on the recording, or, if no stamp is available, an analog clock with a sweeping
second hand must be visible on the recording at all times.
All students playing the improvi sation from the requi red selecti on should perform those solos with the required audio track playing in
the background. Only the improvisation section may have audio in the background.
No video effects (i.e. fade in, fade out, cross fade) are permitted.
Video tapes and DVDs will be disqualified if these procedures are not followed, if a completed and signed
Nomination/Tape Authentication Form does not accompany the tape/DVD, or if the tapelDVD is received after the
December 13, 2013, deadline established by the Executive Director and MBDA President.

Information and Requirements
String students in grades 7 - 9 may audition for the All State Junior
String Orchestra. String students in grades 10 - 12 may audition for
the All State Senior Orchestra. To part icipate in the Maryland All
State Orchestra activities, a student must attend an independent (pri-
vate), parochial, or public school in Maryl and and be in an orchestra
class for credit. In high schools in which an alternate scheduli ng pro-
gram is operating, the student may participate in the year in which he
or she earns a full credit. Please refer to the el igibil ity requirements
on page 3 in thi s publication and on the website.

Most of the audition pieces are sourced from the public domain, and
the excerpts are posted on the website at www.mmea-
maryland.org. It is strongly recommended that you visi t the web-
site to be sure you have the correct excerpts. The exceptions are
most of the etudes; they are sourced from books. With the excep-
tion of the public domain pieces, no photocopies will be
allowed at the audition. Copyright laws will be enforced.
Scales Required: Each student will be asked to perfonn One
Major Scale and Arpeggio and One Minor Scale. In the case
of two-octave scales, the lowest two octaves should be played.
No arpeggio is required for the minor scales. All scales must be
memorized.
Sight reading will be requi red of all students.
Str ing Bass players are auditioning for assignment to the Orchestra
or Band.
Harpist Needed:
A harp player may be needed thi s year. This posit ion is open to any
student entering grades 7-12. Auditions will take place on the Junior
Orchestra audition day (Saturday, November 16, 2013). Teachers,

Music Lists
For District and State Band, Chorus and Orchestra Festivals/
Assessments, only the Maryland State literature lists for Band, Chorus
and Orchestra may be used. For Distinct and State Wind ami Percllssion
and String Solo and Ensemble Festivals. only the Maryland lists may be
used with two exceptions: guitar solos and harp solos may be selected
from a NYSSMA Manual published within the past 10 years (2003 and
forward; published every 3 years; most recent edition is 2012). For
District and State Vocal Solo and Ensemble Festivals, the NYSSMA

20132014 All State Junior Chorus Information
Information and Requirements;
Auditions for the All State Junior Chorus will be Saturday
November 16,2013. Students must attend an independent (private),
parochial, or public school in Maryland and meet the class mem-
bership and grade designations (grades 7 - 9) to be eligible to par-
ticipate in the All State auditions.
To participate in the Maryland All State activities, a student must be
enrolled in a chorus class. In high schools in which an alternative
scheduling program is operating, the student may participate in the year
in which he or she earns a full credit. Any questions should be directed
to the MMEA Executive Director by the Choral Teacher at the nWl1bers
provided in this publication. Students and parents are not to call.
There will be three audition sites:
1. Broadneck High School , Anne Arundel County
2. Calvert Hall College High School, Baltimore County
3. Middletown Middle School, Frederi ck County
Copy the appli cation page as many times as needed. Please indi-
cate your preferred audition site. If your students need to go to dif-
ferent sites, use one form for each site requested. Send the complet-
ed fonn in this handbook to the MMEA Executive Director no later
than October 4, 2013. Use one fOlln for evelY ten students who will
audition. No limit will be placed upon the number from each school;
however, please be sure that all singers meet the range requirements
on the next page. There will be no divisi auditions. A student audi-
tioning for All State Junior Chorus may audition for All State Junior
Band if the student meets the eligibility requirements.
In the event that a student atTives at the audition site with the incor-
rect audition music prepared, the student will be given the COlTect music
and up to an hour to prepare the COlTect music before the audition.
Unchanged male voices may audition for soprano or alto. If a
voice change occurs after the registration, teachers should contact
the MMEA office as soon as possible. It is the policy ofMCEA that
females should audition as soprano or alto singers. In the event that
a female student insi sts on auditioning for the tenor pati, she does
so at her own risk. Teachers should call the MMEA Executive
Director to get a consent fom1 relieving MCEA of liability, which
must be signed by a parent or guardian and submitted by the dead-
line date with the application.
Vocal evaluations will be based primarily on:
1. Vocal quality, blendability
2. Perfom1ance accuracy of sung selections
3. Ability to read and sing accurately and on pitch
A. Performance Selections
1. Accompanied Piece
Be prepared to sing your part in "Praise the Lord" from Judas
Maccabeus by G.F. Handel , arr. Hal H. Hopson, Harold Flammer
Music, A 5714, SATB, quarter note = 100. The students will si ng the

entire piece in the correct octave. Public school teachers should
obtain a CD from their music office; private school teachers should
obtain the CD from Jim Turk, DeMatha Catholic High School, 4313

piece. Photocopies may not be used. Music will not be suppli ed at
auditions.
2. A Cappella Piece
Be prepared to sing from memory and without accompaniment, "The
Water is Wide" exactly as the notes and rhythms are printed and in the
COlTect octave. Students are expected to use the expressive elements
and the suggested tempo indicated in the a cappella piece. Students will
sing in the following keys: Soprano: B-fl at Major, Alto: E-flat Major,
Tenor: B-flat Major, Bass: E-flat Major. (See score in this handbook.)
The tonic chord, scale, and tonic chord again will be played on the audi-
tion CD. Students must find their staJiing pitch from the final chord.
B. Sight Reading:
Teachers of visually impaired students should consult the policies
and procedures posted online, and notify the MMEA office of the
preferred method for any such students.
1. Rhythmic Sight Reading
Students will be asked to perf 01111 two rhythmic sight reading
examples. They may choose to clap, tap, sing, or say syllables. One
example will be in 3/4 and one in 4/4 time. The examples will be
four measures long and may include a variety of rhythm values.

next page. The students will be given a short practice time and can
practice out loud or si lently. Students will be asked to establish their
tempo by counting one full measure before beginning the example.
2. Melodic Sight Reading
Students wi ll be asked to perform two melodic sight reading
examples. They may choose to sing on syllables, numbers, or a neu-
traJ vowel. One example will be in 3/4 and one in 4/4 time. Each
example will be four measures in length, wi ll include any pitches in
the C major scale and may cover a one-octave range. Tenors will
sing the sight reading examples in the key of C from a score notat-
ed in the key of ofe The examples wi!! use pitches within the octave
of g below middle c to g second line, treble staff All examples wi ll
be presented in treble and bass clefs. See examples 011 the next page.
All students accepted for the Maryland All State Junior Chorus
will receive a CD with their voice part and the accompaniment for
each piece on the program.
The Junior Chorus will rehearse in Towson, on Friday, March 7 -
Sunday, March 9, 2014. The concert wi ll be held on Sunday, March
9,2014, at Parkville High School.

ALL STATE CHORUS - Audition Script
JUDGE: "Hi, , how are you this (morning/afternoon)? My name is . It's nice to meet you.
Which part are you singing today? Most of the instructions are given on the CD so listen carefully. "
TURN ON CD:"This is the ______ track." (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass).
CD: "The first part of the audition will be the accompanied piece . You will be singing with the
recorded accompaniment. You may use your music for this piece. Be sure to sing your voice part." LET CD
CONTINUE
CD: "The second part of the audition will be the a cappella performance of the song, . You will hear the
tonic chord, scale, and tonic chord again. You may sing along with the scale. After the second chord you may begin."
PAUSE CD
CD: "Do not open the binder until you are told to do so. The next part of the audition will be the rhythmic sight
reading. There are two examples of four measures each. You will be instructed to look over the first example and
practice silently or out loud for 45 seconds. When the practice time is over, establish your tempo by counting one
measure out loud before beginning the example. Then, do the same for the second. You may clap, tap, use numbers,
"Ta's" and "Ti's" or whatever method you use in class. Open the binder and look for rhythmic sight reading # 1. You
may practice now." (CD will continue running for 45 seconds of silence during the practice time.) "This is the end of
your practice time. Please establish your tempo by counting one full measure and begin. " PAUSE CD FOR
PERFORMANCE OF #1
CD: "Turn to rhythmic Sight reading #2. When the practice time is over, establish your tempo by counting one
measure out loud before beginning the example. You may begin practice now." (CD will continue running for 45
seconds of silence during the practice time.) "This is the end of your practice time. Please establish your tempo by
counting one full measure and begin." PAUSE CD FOR PERFORMANCE OF #2
CD: "Do not turn the page until you are told to do so. The final part of your audition is melodic sight reading.
There are two examples of four measures each. You will hear a tonic chord and the scale up and down, with which
you may sing along out loud or silently. You will then hear the tonic chord again. You will be instructed to look at
the first example and practice for one minute. Then do the same for the second example. You may use solfege, any
neutral syllable, like "loa", numbers, or whatever method you use in class as you sing each example."
CD: "Turn to melodic Sight reading #1. You will now hear the chord, scale and chord again in (the key) for your
practice time. (CD will continue running for 1 minute of silence during the practice time.) "This is the end of your
practice time. You will now hear the chord, scale and chord again for your performance of example #1." PAUSE CD
