Start "Small" in 2014 by Rev. Trey Flowers, Minister of Youth & "The Bridge"
It seems inevitable around this time of year: making New Year's Resolutions that we are sure to break only a few short weeks later. If you look up a list of the most popular resolutions, you'll find that most are invariably focused on ourselves (I'm going to eat less; I'm going to exercise more; I'm finally going to get my budget under control). While these are all fine and worthy goals, I've become convinced that the reason they tend to fail is that what we really need is to make choices that have an impact on the community and people around us. or weekend night. The overall goal of Q Groups is to connect with other people from our community and strengthen the web of relationships that makes our church who we are. In doing so, we will develop a deeper relationship with God and with each other. These groups are based on the model that Jesus demonstrated when he recruited his twelve disciples. Even our Lord and Savior surrounded himself with a group of people to support and challenge his amazing ministry! We, too, do better when we surround ourselves with people who can celebrate with us during the good times and mourn with us during the bad times. The Bible says, "as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens the wits of another" (Proverbs 27:17). In the same way, people in Q Groups will help each other become the people that God wants us to be.

Come join us as we start "small" in 2014! By doing so, you can choose to make a New Year's Resolution to get more involved in our community and support each other on the roads on life and that's a resolution that will last a lifetime. Over the coming months, a new Q Group will be starting Starting at The Bridge next week, we are offering a unique every two weeks. small group opportunity known as "Q Groups." Short for If you'd like to participate in or lead one of these small "Question Groups," Q Groups will be short-term, six-week small groups that meet at a time and place of the group's groups, you can get more information or sign up by emailing choosing. A new Q Group will begin every two weeks Stephen Daniel King at sdking@woodmontcc.org. beginning January 12, and they are open to anyone in the Woodmont, Bridge, or Nashville community. Some groups might meet right before or after The Bridge, some might meet for lunch during the week, or some might meet on a weekday

What Happens at Woodmont Doesn't Stay at Woodmont by Thom Schuyler, Director of College, Young Adults, Missions & Outreach
Lots of images run through our minds when we consider the life of Jesus. I suspect many of us would immediately think of His life as a preacher and healer, His birth, miracles, death and resurrection. Perhaps we neglect to recognize one of Jesus' most profound roles: preparing the disciples and other followers to "go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation." Christianity may bear His name but the remarkable growth of the faith was initially set aflame by a small group of committed believers trained at the foot of The Master. We know from history that the growth of Christ's Church did not happen quickly nor did it happen without great peril to those that were leading the charge. It rolled out in little victories confronted daily by tremendous resistance, torture and death. For me, nothing short of being witness to The
The Spire is published weekly by:

Resurrection would have inspired those brave and faithful to persevere through the harsh environment that awaited them. But let us not forget that they were also prepared. We have opportunities to gather at Woodmont Christian Church many times each week. We gather to worship and pray, sing and learn, teach and share, engage our minds, offer our support and bring our gifts. One of the things I love so much about our congregation is the generous manner in which we give back to one another, our local community and across the globe. What happens at Woodmont doesn't stay at Woodmont it goes out into God's world. In our own way we are carrying on a tradition that began in Galilee 2000 years ago: we are being prepared and we are carrying our preparation and our witness "into all the world."

As a new year unfolds let me encourage each of us to commit or recommit - to one of the many ministries and missions that Woodmont supports. There are so many ways we can serve and so many in need of our service. We have been prepared and now it is time to go

Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:43-45) Blessings, Thom

Thank you Woodmont!

Late last week, as news spread of arctic air to sweep through our city, we were faced with the task of finding warm beds and food for some of Nashvilles homeless. A plea was made last Friday afternoon to the WCC congregation and soon we were staffed for five extra days of Room in the Inn! Offers for meals, overnight hosts, drivers and laundry were packaged together in order to keep some of these folks from spending a treacherous night on the streets of Nashville. Thank you Woodmont for your caring and generous spirit! We still seek RITI help on the dates listed below. This year, we have arranged for husband/wife teams to serve as hosts and have their own lockable room at SH. If you are interested in serving, please go to the RITI page on the Woodmont website and sign up for a date that fits your schedule. Again, thank you!

Bear one anothers burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

The LaForge's Share Recovery Experience in the Philippines This Sunday, January 12th at 11:00 a.m. in Room 200
On November 8th a typhoon with winds of over 150 miles per hour devastated the Philippines killing more that 6,000, leaving 2,000 missing, and 4 million homeless or with damaged homes. Two Woodmont members, Steve and Deb LaForge, took two weeks vacation in late November to go to the Philippines and help with the recovery work. Many of us have wanted to hear them talk about their experience. Now we have the chance. Steve and Deb will be sharing their experience, which they say was far beyond what they expected. Woodmont is proud to have such true missionaries as Steve and Deb LaForge. The Reflections and "Points of View" classes will meet jointly, but all others are welcome to come.

6:30 p.m. - "Seeking" Discipleship Class (Boardroom) - Led by Clay Stauffer

The Discipleship Classes are broken into the three focal areas of Woodmont's Mission Statement. Each area will be discussed over the next three weeks. The Seeking class is the first area that will focus on our core beliefs as Christians. We will discuss what the church is and is not. We will talk about why we need the church. We will also talk about the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), how it emerged, where it started, and what it is. Why is the unity of the church important? We will identify some biblical images of the church. We will discuss the theology of the Lord's Supper and Baptism. We will talk about Woodmont's many ministries and programs and how you can get involved. What is expected of church members in terms of time, talent, and treasures? We will discuss the ways that God is present in our lives each and every day and how faith and spirituality is an ongoing journey. January 22nd - "Sharing" Class and January 29th - "Serving" Class

6:30 p.m. - Introduction to the Bible Class (105) - Led by Roy Stauffer
The class will look at where and how we got the Bible, when it was written, who wrote it, both Old Testament and New Testament. Then we will take a brief look at every book in the Bible to see how it fits in with the whole Bible. This kind of information is needed before we can read and study the Bible correctly.

NEWS FROM THE NASHVILLE FOOD PROJECT

We picked up over 150 pounds of ground venison through Tennessee Wildlife Federation's Hunters For the Hungry program in December. Our volunteers have prepared venison meatballs and meatloaf to include in our hot meals. We love how flavorful, lean and local this meat is!

Beginning in January 2014, The Nashville Food Project (TNFP) and the Center for Refugees and Immigrants of Tennessee (CRIT) entered into a unique partnership for newly resettled immigrants. Through a federally funded grant, up to 15 immigrants will be allocated plots at TNFP's Wedgewood Urban Garden to grow food for their families. ESL classes for program participants will be taught by CRIT staff either in the garden or at South Hall. Volunteer drivers are needed to help transport program participants in the church van to their classes that began on Friday, January 3. Total time commitment will be from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Fridays, January-May. If you are interested in serving as a volunteer driver for any or all events, please contact Malinda Hersh at malinda@thenashvillefoodproject.org.

Youth Choir Reunion CD

If you are interested in purchasing one or more copies of the Youth Choir Reunion CD recorded on September 14, 2013 please email Thom Schuyler at thomschuyler@gmail.com. Please include your name and number of CDs you would like to purchase. CDs are $15 and a portion of the profits will underwrite future Youth Choir projects.

Give Us a Call!
Please be sure to call us whenever you need meeting space whether you have a group of 2 or 20. Our housekeeping staff relies on the master calendar to know who is in the building at all times. In addition, they need to be aware of rooms (and adjacent restrooms) being used so that space can be touched-up after use. Recently, alarms have been activated by folks leaving the building after the housekeeping staff has already locked/secured the building. When the alarm is activated after hours, a church member must respond and is often required to drive over to the church to address the issue. This is a huge building and it is difficult to monitor all the comings/goings. Putting your meeting/event on the calendar will ensure that we know you are in the building. Thanks for your help! Dear Woodmont, Amy, Hailey, Katy and I want to sincerely thank all of you for your prayers, concern, visits, cards, and good food during my recent convalescence from heart surgery. It is so humbling to see the love that flows from every one of you and we deeply appreciate it. I have personally felt your prayers and have been lifted by all the smiles and well wishes as we have returned to church during this Christmas season. May God richly bless each one of you in the New Year with His grace, mercy and love. We owe the church so much. Thank you. ~Mike Wright What to do with old Christmas Cards?
RecycleRonda Hirst will be taking old Christmas cards to use in 2 projects this year. The Christ Quest kids will be making placemats with them for Room in the Inn. Also, the kids will be using them to make ornaments for boxes given to Samaritans Purse. Our target for Samaritans Purse is 1,000 ornaments, so just a few cards will help out.

Thanks so much!!!! Any questions, please call Ronda Hirst at 361-3381.
