Alvarado hopes for quick return to playoffs

fter never reaching the playoffs before, Head Coach Israel Stephens helped guide the Indians to back-to-back postseason appearances in 2011 and 2012. In 2013, the Indians were under the direction of a new coach while Stephens was at another school. He hopes that by returning to his alma mater he can once again lead them into playoff contention, even after a 1-16-3 season a year ago. There are not a lot of returning players for the Indians this season, but there are returners at key positions. Gabriel Favela, a four-year player for the Indians, returns at forward and Alejandro Mendoza returns at keeper. Defender Erick Garcia is the only other returning starter, giving the Indians a leader with experience at three of four positions. Other players that will be expected to step up are defender Juan Garcia, midfielder Carlos Padilla and midfielder Nestor Alvarado. While Stephens notes fitness and work rate as team strengths, the team has a long

way to go to get to where it was a couple years ago.

Senior Gabriel Favela is one of only three returners for the Indians.

In order for us to compete for a playoff spot we have to improve defensively, he said. And we have to find ways to get goals. The Indians find themselves in a tougher district than they did during their run of playoff appearances with the additions of Stephenville and Kennedale. Playing in this district helps prepare you for the speed of play and the overall pace well see in the playoffs, Stephens said. This is the last year Alvarado will be in a district with the likes of Cleburne, Joshua and Granbury, but Stephens does not believe things will be easier just because of a new classification. Our goals will remain the same to improve and compete for district and state championships, he said. We have to be good regardless of size. Weve been very competitive in 4A in the past and well have to get to that level again to compete at the level we want, regardless of classification. Tommy Brown

Lady Indians looking for rebound season

fter a string of four consecutive playoff appearances, the Lady Indian soccer team took a step back last year when it was put in a district that included perennial playoff contenders such as Cleburne, Joshua, Granbury, Stephenville and Kennedale. The Lady Indians went 6-16 and missed the playoffs in the tougher district, but Coach Ryan ODonnell is hoping for a fresh start but with several of the same faces. Only three graduated off of last years team, two of which moved on to play college soccer. In order for us to compete for a playoff spot we have to have good team chemistry, ODonnell said. The girls have to be willing to work hard for it all year. I believe that we are capable of doing well, it will just take a few wins and the girls believing in themselves. Of the returning starters, Ira Guardian, Keely Crowder, Luisa Quintana and Raigan Hester will be relied on to provide leadership. Crowder and Hester have played on the varsity for their

entire high school careers. Newcomers for the Lady Indians will include Sydney Summers and Jessica Cornejo. Summers has a chance to be a playmaker as a freshman after scoring all four goals in a scrimmage win over Dallas Spruce. Cornejo will be most valuable to the Lady Indians midfield with her ball control skills, but ODonnell believes she has the ability to develop into a forward as well. This will be the last year Alvarado plays in a district with the likes of Cleburne, Joshua and Granbury as beginning in 2015 there will be three classifications for soccer instead of two. I wish we could play in a more even district as far as the number of 3A teams but this will only prepare us for when we do play in a 3A district next year, ODonnell said. With that being said, I believe we will continue to improve on our win total this season and I do think we could surprise a couple teams by the time district comes along. Tommy Brown

Elks working toward turnaround season

erhaps no program was more negatively affected by the berth of Centennial High School than the Burleson boys soccer team. But the Elks hope to follow in the footsteps of the Burleson High football team. Last year on the gridiron, the Elks went winless, struggling simply to be competitive, but quickly turned things around to make the postseason this year. Last season for the Elks soccer team was also a struggle, as they went 0-14 in district play with a young and inexperienced team that was left bare after the BISD split. Meanwhile, across town, the Spartans were chock full of talent and experienced a district title. Coach Jeff Cross said the Elks only had one player with varsity experience who was on the team during district play last year. This year, the Elks return nine varsity players, including six starters Trevor Anderson,

David Carrizal, Ad Desai, Tyler Erickson, Austin Linehan and Zach Payne. The strength should be in our defense, Cross said. Although our goal keepers will be rookies. Carrizal is the only three-year letterman, one of our captains and he will be the leader of our defense. Cross added that Erickson and Dasai are fellow captains along with Carrizal, and that Erickson will be solid alongside Carrizal in the back while Dasai will solidify the Elks middle. Our team is still young and rebuilding from the past two years, but I think we will start closing the gap and should have some success in our tough district this year, Cross said. As always, one of our team goals is to make the playoffs, and I think we will have a chance this year. A.J. Crisp

New coach brings lofty expectations

Lady Elks aiming for deep playoff run

T

he Burleson Lady Elks return several key contributors from last years team, and they will look to make a run at the District 164A title under a new coach. Charles Nobles, who was previously the assistant soccer coach at Midlothian the past three years, takes over the Lady Elk soccer program. Burleson returns 10 varsity players from a season ago, highlighted by the teams four captains Olivia Clark, Hayden Strube, Jessie Clark and Paighton McNeely. Nobles also said sophomore Mariah Escalante will play an important role after starting for the Lady Elks as a freshman in 2013. The biggest key for success in 2014 for the Lady Elks is working as one cohesive unit, Nobles said. Im a big believer in what I call the total futbol concept, or total soccer concept, he said. Thats basically where the entire team attacks together and defends together. The idea for us is to keep the ball and penetrate from there, and then when we lose it, were going to pressure defensively as a unit together. The biggest key that we have is that we play as a team. Were a team first and that everything we do, we do as a team. The second big key is for our team to keep possession of the ball and capitalize on scoring chances to be successful. Third thing is to have a leave everything on the field type of attitude. Burleson came in fourth place in district last year and lost to Joshua in extra time in the bidistrict round of Class 4A playoffs. Nobles said the Lady Elks aspirations for this season are to be No. 1. Our goal is to go all the way to the state tournament and win the state tournament, he said. As a team, we believe that if we put in the work, well have the opportunity to be successful, win district, win in the playoffs and go from there. A.J. Crisp

Lady Spartans out to make up for last years early playoff exit

Driven by disappointment
I

t has been a long offseason for the Burleson Centennial Lady Spartans and Coach Kara Cuellar. The Lady Spartans rolled through District 16-4A play as district champions last season, but saw their season end much earlier than they had hoped when they were upset by Cleburne in the first round of the postseason. Last year, the early exit in the playoffs left a sour taste in our mouths, Cuellar said. I know they definitely want to go a lot deeper in the playoffs than what we did last year, and I know the seniors want to defend their district title. Im hoping with all the seniors we have, that well have a solid leadership foundation. The Lady Spartans return an astonishing 17 players 11 of those seniors this season from last years varsity team as they only graduated three seniors in 2013. Among those returning players are all-district and all-county performers Koryann Clark, Ashley Ledford, Taylor Mauppin, Hanna Mattinson and Enfiniti Stephens. Im definitely expecting another great year from Koryann Clark, Ashley Ledford, Taylor Mauppin and a lot of these girls, Cuellar said. Im really expecting a lot from them. Cuellar said that three freshmen made the varsity squad to start the season, and said more could possibly move up from a talented JV team. I think one of the keys is team chemistry, Cuellar said. Thats important. Last year, our team chemistry was bet6 Johnson County Soccer 2014

ter than the year before. Also, I think game shape is important. Not being in game shape hurt us last year. We werent in the best shape and you could tell when wed get tired, and wed hit a brick wall. And that was when mistakes would happen. To be successful, we need to have our best players out there with good team chemistry and we need to be in game shape.

With so much returning talent, including seasoned and prove players like Clark and Stephens, among others, Cuellar said the Lady Spartans aim is high in 2014. I want us to defend the district title, obviously, she said. Theres no reason why we shouldnt be able to. We basically have the same team, but weve gained a couple of more

players that are going to add to this. I want us to go farther in the playoffs. I really want to get into the third and fourth rounds at least. I really think we have the talent to get there, its just going to depend on if the girls want it and if the chemistry is there and if we stay injury free. I think we can do it. A.J. Crisp

Despite losing key pieces, Centennial maintains high aspirations

Spartans look for repeat success

tributors from a season ago. Walker Stewart started every game for Centennial as a freshman last year, and Rose said he will be the anchor on defense this season. Cord Martinez is expected to fill in at Johnsons position and Blake Beckrich is another key returner. Gabriel Hernandez, who was Centennials second-leading scorer behind Johnson last year, also returns. I feel like we have a lot of depth overall, Rose said. Theres more of a team morale this year, not that there wasnt last year, but theres a different vibe to the team. Theres nobody that stands out and everyone plays for each other. It is a team atmosphere here, and I think thats going to help us go a long way. We lost to Stephenville last year. They didnt have the better talent, but they played better as a team and thats what paid off for them in the end. I think thats going to be the key for us is playing for each other and understanding it takes all 11 guys and not just one. Rose said the Spartans goal is to defend last years district title and play deep into the postseason.

he Burleson Centennial Spartans are coming off the young programs best season in its early history after winning the District 164A title and advancing four rounds into the postseason. But Centennial is also having to deal with losing its first-ever graduating class a class that included several key players. Chris Johnson and B.J. Rodrick were each all-district and all-county superlative performers for the Spartans a year ago, and both are also playing college ball. Replacing those two players production is a key for the season, Coach Chance Rose said. Were in a unique situation where we had our first graduating class, Rose said. This is the first time guys have to step up and fill in. But weve got a lot of good, quality players who can step up and do it. Johnson was one of the states leading goal scorers a season ago, but Rose said this year, the Spartans will have

to attack more as a team than letting a single player create offense. Its going to have to be more of a collective team effort, Rose said. A lot of the time last year, it was easy to let Chris be Chris. Its just a matter of these guys showing up in situations and I think they can. I think well step up and do fine. I dont know what well have one guy who scores 32 goals again, but we should have a couple of guys with 20. Another key aspect of the season is at the goal keeper

position, where last year, the Spartans had two quality goal keepers in Ron Reid and Mason Stringer, who were superlative performers as well. Stringer graduated and Reid is focusing on football in hopes of signing with a college. We got a young guy Jacob Green, Rose said. Hes been on the JV last two years and has really developed well. I have full confidence he can step in and do a great job. Despite losing several key pieces from last years squad, Rose does return a few con-

Depth a strength for Jackets

New Cleburne coach has high expectations
or the third consecutive year, the Cleburne Yellow Jackets will be led by a new head coach. For 2014, William Walker will lead the Jackets into battle, and he said with the talent and depth Cleburne has, he has high expectations for the season. With the group thats coming up, with the juniors we have and the senior leadership, we have high expectations, Walker said. Our goal is to get one of those top couple spots so we can play a lower seed, so it gives us a better chance of advancing. In 2013, the Jackets finished

in fourth place in District 15-4A and lost to Burleson Centennial in the bidistrict round of Class 4A playoffs. Its tough to say because I obviously have limited knowledge of some of the teams in our district, Walker said. I did see Granbury and Stephenville play in the state tournament, and I know Cleburne was competitive with those teams last year. Walker said being smart and patient on defense, then switching to aggressive on offense is how he likes his teams to play. I like to attack, but we really stress getting back and getting ball side when the other team has possession, he said. Being smart and patient on defense to try to slow down their attack, and then when we slow them down and hopefully create

turnovers, we attack quickly. Mario Juarez, Ronald Cabello, Joseph Paez, Aaron Webb and Zach Long are several players who Walker said would play integral roles into the success this year. I really think that weve got a lot of depth overall, Walker said. I believe our strength is going to be in our midfield. Ive got a lot of ball handlers and weve got some speed. But overall, its the depth. I think Ill be able to roll people in off the bench and not miss a beat because theres so many guys who are like clones of each other who I can bring in and out. How well Long, who was a freshman last year and was the district and county newcomer of the year, and Webb work together is an important aspect of

the Jackets, Walker said. Those are my two center backs, he said. Aaron is a junior who was on varsity last year as a sophomore, but he is being moved to defense for the first time, and how well they work together will be key for us. Taking over at goal keeper this season for the Jackets will be Juarez, who Walker said is one of his more talented players. I have pretty high expectations for him, Walker said. Hes actually a really good ball handler. He could be playing in midfield. Hes just a good, athletic, smart kid. Im not worried about my keeper situation at all. A.J. Crisp

Lady Jackets begin new era under new coach

Cleburne aims for back-to-back deep postseason runs
he Cleburne Lady Jackets, who had a successful season in 2013, begin a new era under Coach Aaron Gentry this season. The Lady Jackets shocked the District 16-4A district champion, Burleson Centennial, in the bidistrict round of playoffs last season. Cleburne then defeated Fort Worth Carter-Riverside in area before falling to Fort Worth Arlington Heights in the sectional round. If the Lady Jackets are to repeat last years success, they will do so with several new faces after losing key players to graduation from last years team. We graduated a lot of players last year seven starters, Gentry said. One of the keys is going to be for our seniors to take a strong leadership role that they may not have had to take in the past. And we need our underclassmen to step up and fill the roles that have been vacated by the graduating class last year. Its going to be hard because last years seniors were a pretty talented group, but were going to do our best to fill those spots. Despite losing key players like Taylor Bicknell and Amber Ward from last years team, Gentry said there is still plenty of talent on the roster. I expect us to be competitive and to walk on the field and be able to compete with anyone, he said. I expect Brandy Villasana to have a solid year. She is learning how to be a better and more vocal leader. If she continues to progress, I think she can be very successful. Raygan Odell is also transitioning into a strong leader, learning how to lead vocally and being positive. Shes very com-

petitive, and thats going to help our team a lot with that competitive edge. Charity Gonzales was the all-county offensive player of the year as a sophomore in 2012 as she led the Lady Jackets in goals, and Gentry said wherever she plays on the field, she will provide a big impact. Charity is one of those players I can plug in anywhere, he said. Whatever role she has for us is going to be important. Whether its scoring goals or defending other goal scorers, either way, shes going to play a big role. Brianna Reband brings an athletic nature that is very important. If she can harness that

athletic ability, she will definitely help on the offensive side of the ball. After advancing three rounds deep into postseason play in 2013, Gentry said taking one step further is the goal this season. They had a very successful year last year and our goal is to never go backwards, he said. We want to keep reaching forward. We want to perform well enough in our difficult district to make the playoffs and see what happens there. We want to keep building. We dont want to go backwards and lose in the first round or not make the playoffs. A.J. Crisp

Lady Owls focus on day-to-day improvement

Joshua hopes to match last years record-setting season
he Joshua Lady Owls are coming off their best season in school history. In 2013, the Lady Owls claimed the District 15-4A title and went three rounds into the postseason. Coach Jeff Brooks will return nine varsity players from last years district title squad, and Joshua only graduated from players from a season ago. Among those returning players are Mackenzie Anderson, Hayley Rohleder, Julia Tucker, Sky Plummer, Shelby Gray and Payton Boyd. Anderson was the all-district and all-county goal keeper of the year in 2012. We expect everybody to lead and everybody to take responsibility, Brooks said. We expect Mackenzie to be big for

he Joshua Owls finished in third place in District 15-4A but lost in the first round to Mansfield Lake Ridge in 2013. The Owls return seven varsity players from a season ago after losing four seniors from last years squad. Among those returning players are Kelsey Bessent and Chad Smith, both of whom Coach Gary Walker said will play key roles this year. Bessent, a senior, has been on the varsity since his freshman season. Another key player for the Owls will be freshman Daniel Lopez, who Walker said will start at center middle. The biggest key to success for the Owls, according to Walker, was blending together as a team.
10 Johnson County Soccer 2014

Its going to be an older group, but theres several new guys coming in, Walker said. We have to foreign exchange students going to play and we have some JV kids stepping up. So just blending everybody together is going to be the key. A couple weeks of tournament play will help that. Well see pretty quickly what we have because were in some tough tournaments. If we can get through nondistrict without killing ourselves, well be doing good. Were probably playing one of the harder nondistrict schedules around. Walker said the Owls will maintain a similar style of play from last years team, but with several new pieces on the roster, it will be a matter of time to see how they fit together and adjust.

Walker said he expects his team to compete for a district title, but he said that championship goes through Granbury. If we can keep everybody healthy, and well be a lot deeper than last year, well be fine, Walker said. Im not sure if were as good as Granbury, but wed like to be in the top two. Im not putting us in a league with Granbury yet because Im not sure how well adjust. We only missed Stephenville by a point last year in the standings. It came down to the end of the year, and the way the schedule plays out, we play Stephenville the last game, so that may be a game to see who gets second or third or fourth. A.J. Crisp

Lady Owls
us. Shes been a great leader for us this year already. She does a great job on and off the field. Im really excited about having her come back. Hayley, the same kind of deal, and Julia Tucker is also returning. She had another great cross country season and is a fantastic leader, too. Another senior is Sky Plummer, and she had an excellent season last year, but tore her ACL halfway through district. Shes worked hard to come back and were excited about that. As was the case last season, Brooks said the key for the Lady Owls this year is to control what you can control. Theres a lot in a game that you cannot control, Brooks said. I guess our big key is just fighting really, really hard and being organized defensively. Those are two things you can control. And I felt like we did pretty well with those things last year. We just hope we can do that and be solid in those two aspects of the game. Its like a broken record, but if we do what were supposed to and we play really hard and play organized soccer, well be fine. Brooks said he hopes to repeat last years success, but thats not the focus of the team or season. Wed love to do it again, obviously, he said. But at the same time, we didnt focus a whole lot on that. It was never our focus last year as a make-or-break thing. If we improve every day out, when we get to the end of the year, I think were going to like where we are. Obviously, we hope were fortunate enough to get back to the playoffs and do well once we get there. But getting better today and building each day between now and the end of the season, we can control that and we hope the rest will take care of itself. A.J. Crisp
