Spanish/Latin American Food Project
Food Fridays

Goal: You are a food vendor who makes one Spanish/Latin American dish really
well, and you want to sell it to nearby schools to serve it in their cafeteria. Pretend
you are making a presentation for the head chef of the Roycemore cafeteria. Your
goal is to convince that person why they should buy this food from you to
serve to students, faculty, and staff in the cafeteria.

Directions:
1. Pick a Spanish/Latin American dish (go to page 3 for suggestions) and ask Ms.
Fillingham for permission first.

2. Research that dish:
a. Read about its history.
b. Read about when this dish is served (on special occasions, regularly,
seasonally, as a treat, etc.).
c. Find the best recipe for this dish.

3. Make a pamphlet, Powerpoint Presentation, OR poster about this dish. Include:
a. The history of the dish.
b. When the dish is served (see above).
c. A recipe of the dish.
d. Pictures of the dish.
e. Why this dish should be included on Roycemore Schools cafeteria
menu.
f. Other creative ways to present this Powerpoint, pamphlet or poster
(color, more pictures, drawings, etc.).

4. Make (or buy) the dish before your assigned date on one of the Fridays (see
page 4). Buy enough for 11 people (including utensils, napkins, and plates if
necessary) and bring into school on your assigned day.

a. I highly recommend that you attempt to cook the dish (with the help of
parents, of course) but points will not be taken off from this project
if you buy the dish.

5. Make your presentation during class on the assigned day.

a. Before we try the dish that you bring in, you will give a short
presentation (no more than 5 minutes) on your Italian dish using your
pamphlet to convince your peers (who will act as the head chefs of
Roycemore School cafeteria) why this dish should be included.

Project Total = 100 points (should include all of the necessary and required items
above)

Some tips for doing well on this project:
Start researching your project way in advance. Sites and places that will help
you with this:
o Start with Wikipedia
Get a basic background of your food
Look at the external links at the bottom of the page for more
suggestions as to where to look
o Google your food
With this search, make sure the links you are clicking on are up-
to-date and reputable links.
o Ask Ms. Fillingham
If you are having difficulty researching your food, please come
see Ms. Fillingham right away and she will help you.
Arrange for how you will acquire food (will you buy it? Will you make it?)
Dont forget to bring in your food on your assigned day!
Practice your presentation.

Spanish/Latin American Dish Ideas

*When you bring in your dish, I can refrigerate it if need be. Come see before school
to refrigerate your dish.

*If it doesnt need to be refrigerated, you can also bring your dish to my room before
school to store it during the day.

*If you need/want to warm up your food before class, please see me before school
starts that day. It is very important that you do this.

*Please bring enough food for 11 people.

*Please also bring utensils, plates, and/or napkins if necessary.

*Absolutely no Tex-Mex food (this includes fajitas)nothing from Taco Bell or
the sort. Ask me if you have questions about this.
