THE HOLY FAMILY SPIRITUALITY OF THE FAMILY LA SAGRADA FAMILIA ESPIRITUALIDAD DE LA FAMILIA
Our Catholic Spirituality is about being children of God, about calling God Father.

Mass Schedule

In being Christian our call is to Love. The Divine family - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit the Holy Trinity, are Love and lived and live this Love in Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The center of our call to be Christian is in loving. Love is who we are. It is at the very center of our being. Through our baptism in Christ, by the presence of the Holy Spirit within us we share in the life of God, in Gods Love. The Holy Family is our guide in focusing on the sanctity of the family, our goal is to establish strong families focused on God.

Husband and wife, by the Covenant of Marriage, are no longer... two, but one flesh. By their intimate union of persons and of actions they give mutual help and service to each other, experience the meaning of their unity, and gain an ever deeper understanding of it day by day. This intimate union in the mutual self-giving of two persons, as well as the good of the children, demands full fidelity from both, and an indissoluble unity between them. Christ the Lord has abundantly blessed this richly complex love which springs from the Divine source of Love and is founded on the model of His union with the Church. Jesus, Mary, Joseph are the model for every Christian family. The family home is where the Christian faith is lived on a day-to-day basis. A family that loves Jesus, patterning its life on the Holy Family - Jesus, Mary and Joseph - above all else is a joyful family! Christian parents are guided by the example of the Holy Family, who were in the custom of going to the synagogue every Sabbath day (Luke 4:16). When a family prays together at home and worships together each week, and when they are nourished by the Word of God and the Body and Blood of Christ, it increases their joy. Sunday Mass attendance for the entire family should be presumed and the first of priorities. It is foolish to question or resist. If the thought goes through our mind, But the neighbors or a lot of Catholics dont go, or... I have other things to do and I can make it next week, rather we should tell ourselves, we will serve the LORD! (Joshua 24:15b). Starting with parents there should be no tolerance for swearing. Always tell the truth; honesty needs to be a central premise of family life. Courtesy, saying please and thank you between spouses that sets a model for children is key. Dressing respectfully and modestly is at the heart of living as Jesus, Mary and Joseph. No bad TV or movies. Parents setting healthy and loving boundaries for children. Parents not being afraid to show tenderness and affection with each other and children is at the heart of Family Spirituality. Mary and Joseph also had house rules because the Gospel says, He (Jesus)... was obedient to them (Luke 2:51). Mary and Joseph followed the teachings of the Jewish faith in their home, and they taught their son Jesus to do likewise. Mary and Joseph (and Jesus) invested their God-given talents (see Matthew 25:14-30) and we are called to do the same. What were Joseph and Mary like? Ever wonder about their ordinary life Joseph going to work in his carpenter shop, Mary making bread, cooking, cleaning, picking flowers, Jesus helping clean up or doing lessons? What were weekends like? Holidays? Dinner time? How did they pray together? What was it like at the Temple? How did Joseph show affection towards Mary, or Mary toward Joseph? Did Mary and Joseph ever feel overwhelmed? .How did they worry for their beloved son? A meditation on the Holy Family might help us recall that theirs is not the only holy family. All family life is vocational: it is a calling from God. Every act, every decision within the life of the family, when done with great love, is a real symbol of Christs love. During this holy season, let us recall our holy families and reach out to them with ever more generous love. Let us too reach out to those without families, recalling the words of the mature Jesus who redrew the lines of family: those who hear and do the will of God are my mother and my brothers (Lk 8:21). The love we learn and practice in families is ultimately the love that ought to govern our way of relating to all people. HOLY FAMILY OF NAZARETH, make our family one with you. Help us to be instruments of peace. Grant that love, strengthened by grace, may prove mightier than all the weaknesses and trials through which our families sometimes pass. May we always have God at the center of our hearts and homes until we are all one family, happy and at peace in our true home with you. Amen.

LOVE For generations, various cultures regarded family life merely as a utilitarian necessity. Sirach introduces honor and respect. For Jews and Christians alike, the value of family goes even further. The family is seen as the indispensable school where love is learned. Paul addresses the Colossians and offers a list of virtues that make for a solid and happy church. These values also make for a happy family at ease with itself and its members: mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness. As a capstone, Paul urges love, which brings all of these domestic virtues to perfection. Paul seems to be on a roll as he lauds the virtues of the church at Colossae. With such heartfelt virtues, it is no wonder Paul bursts into song. Who wouldnt? Its clear that the center of the church is love. It is clear that no matter how far from home the members travel, the heart remains and all the members are connected by the gravitational pull of mutual love, a love first learned in family life.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY POPE FRANCIS! - For Pope Francis' 77th birthday on December 17, the Vatican Internet office created (a) special photo album (along with quotes from Pope Francis). Below is an excerpt of his quotes. (Obtained from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, www.usccb.org) Do not be afraid of commitment, of sacrifice and do not view the future with fear. Keep your hope alive: there is always a light on the horizon. Are we often weary, disheartened and sad? Do we feel weighed down by our sins? Do we think that we wont be able to cope? Let us not close our hearts, let us not lose confidence, let us never give up: there are no situations which God cannot change, there is no sin which he cannot forgive if only we open ourselves to him.

TODAYS READINGS First Reading Those who honor and comfort their parents shall never be forgotten (Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14). Psalm Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways (Psalm 128). Second Reading You are called into one body. Bear with one another; forgive one another; let Christs peace control you (Colossians 3:12-21). Gospel Joseph rose, took the child and his mother, and fled to Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23).

NEW YEAR The object of a new year is not that we should have a new year, but rather that we should have a new soul.
G. K. Chesterton

SAINTS & SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Monday: Sixth Day within the Octave of the Nativity of the Lord Tuesday: Seventh Day within the Octave of the Nativity of the Lord; St. Sylvester I; New Years Eve Wednesday: The Octave of the Nativity of the Lord; Mary, the Holy Mother of God; World Day of Prayer for Peace; New Years Day Thursday: Ss. Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen Friday: The Most Holy Name of Jesus; First Friday Saturday: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton; First Saturday TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We are in the season of the Incarnation, the mystery of Gods love poured out in Christs birth. The word derives from the Latin carnis meaning flesh. Throughout history, some Christians have distrusted the flesh, and stressed a hatred of this world and its pleasures. Perhaps they have not paid enough attention to how embodied the sacraments are. One third-century author put it plainly in an image that may alarm diet conscious Americans, explaining that we wash the body so the soul can be cleansed, that we anoint the body so the soul can be strengthened, and that we eat the body and blood of Christ so that the soul can fatten on God. Catholics get that God is revealed in this world. The sacraments use the stuff of creation: water and oil; the senses of the body, touch and taste and smell. We use the things of this world rightly. After all, Gods love poured out into human flesh means the world has eternal value. Why else would Jesus describe the kingdom to come as a teeming city or a marriage banquet? Catholics are realists, and nowhere is that more evident than when we gather for a sacrament.
