B.Tech III Year I Semester (R07) Supplementary Examinations December/January 2013/14 ELECTRICAL MACHINES - III Time: 3 hours Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks *****
1 (a) (b) Calculate the speed and open circuit line and phase voltages of a 4 pole, 3 , 50 Hz Y-connected alternator has 36 slots and 30 cond./slot. The flux per pole is 0.05wb and is sinusoidally distributed. Discuss the differences between: (i) Concentric & distributed winding. (ii) Fractional & integral slot windings. Explain and draw characteristics of o.c. & s.c. of an alternator. Then obtain synchronous reactance and impedance of it. The effective resistance of a 2200 V, 50 Hz, 440 KVA, 1-phase alternator is 0.5 . On short circuit, a field current of 40 A gives the full load current of 200 A. The electromotive force on open circuit with same field excitation is 1160 V. Calculate the synchronous impedance and reactance. Draw & discuss phasor diagram of salient pole alternator and drive the equation for excitation voltage. A 3- 6000 V alternator has the following OCC at normal speed. Field current (A) 14 18 23 30 43 Terminal voltage (V) 4000 5000 6000 7000 8000 With armature short circuited and full load current flowing the field current is 17 A and when the machine is supplying full load if 2000 KVA at zero pf, the field current is 42.5 A and the terminal voltage is 6000 V. Determine the field current required when the machine is supplying the full load at 0.8 pf lagging. Derive an expression for time period of oscillation. The generators of each 2000 KW, rating turbo alternators running in parallel are so adjusted that the frequency of one of the alternators drops uniformly from 50 Hz to 45 Hz and that of the other from 50 Hz to 47 Hz from no-load to full load. Calculate the load on each machine when the total load is 3000 KW. With the help of phasor diagrams explain the effect of excitation on the synchronous motor. Give different power relations of synchronous motor. Explain the power circle diagrams of the synchronous motor. A 400 V, 3-phase, Y connected synchronous motor takes 3.73 KW at normal voltage and has an impedance of (1 + j8) ohms per phase. Calculate the current and pf if the induced emf is 460 V. Explain the constructional features and principle operation of a single phase induction motor. Draw and explain the torque speed curve of a reluctance motor. An ac series motor without compensating winding has a reactance of 30 at 50 Hz and a resistance of 0.6 . At 450 V dc the current is 80 A and speed is 800 rpm. Find the speed & p.f. when operating on 450 V ac at (i) 60 Hz (ii) 40 Hz and taking the same current.
