1 (a) (b) Explain about maximum shear stress theory. A machine member 0.05 m diameter and 0.25 m long is supported at one end as a cantilever. It is subjected to a bending load at free end is 2750 N and torsional moment 250 N-m. Determine the tensile, compressive and shear stresses. Explain stress concentration factor. Explain various methods of reducing of stress concentration in machine parts. Two 12 mm thick tie plates are connected by a lap riveted joint. The tie carries a load of 150 kN, calculate: Width of the plate. Diameter and number of rivets. Rows of rivets and arrangement of rivets and 2 2 2 Efficiency of the joint. The allowable values of stresses are ft = 80 N/mm , fs = 60 N/mm and fc = 120 N/mm . A generator weighing 14 kN is furnished with an eye bolt in the housing for lifting purpose assume the bolt is made of steel with metric coarse thread. Determine: The required bolt diameter. The depth to which the bolt should extend into the cast iron motor housing. A gear is mounted centrally on a shaft of 0.25 m length, between the supports. The pitch circle diameter of the gear is 0.15 m. The gear transmits 10 KW power at 240 rpm. Assuming suitable stresses for the materials, determine (i) shaft diameter. (ii) key dimensions. (iii) minimum width of the gear. Design a hollow shaft for a rotary compressor using the data given below: Maximum torque: 2500 Nm Maximum bending moment : 5000 Nm Combined shear and fatigue factor in torsion : 1.5 Combined shear and fatigue factor in bending : 2 Shaft inside diameter is half the outside diameter. Permissible shear stress in shaft : 50 MPa. What is the percentage saving in using a hollow shaft as compared to a solid shaft? Also compare the stiffness of two shafts. Two 35 mm shafts are connected by a flanged coupling. The flanges are fitted with 6 bolts on 125 mm bolt circle. The shafts transmit a torque of 800 Nm at 300 rpm. For the safe stresses mentioned below, calculate (i) diameter of bolts. (ii) thickness of flanges. (iii) key dimensions. (iv) hub length and (v) per transmitted. Safe shear stress for shaft material = 63 MPa Safe stress for bolt material = 56 MPa Safe stress for cast iron coupling = 10 MPa Safe stress for key material = 46 MPa. A safety valve of 60 mm diameter is to blow off at a pressure of 12 bar. It is held on its seat by a close coiled helical spring. The maximum lift of the valve is 10 mm. Determine main dimensions of a compression spring of sprig index 5. Take initial compression of spring as 35 mm the maximum shear stress in the material of 2 the wire is to be limited to 500 N/mm .
