Something terrible has happened and I feel that I should explain everything to you. After all, we are going to be married soon and you should know everything about your future husband. It all began when my Uncle Elias went to the United States as a young man. He lived in Florida and there he became a wealthy man. When the Civil War began he fought for the South because he did not want the black slaves to be free. After the war he returned to Florida and then he came back to England. This was some years ago. He was then murdered after he received an envelope containing five orange pips. After that, my father came to live in my uncles house. About a year later he also received five orange pips and then he was murdered. Only yesterday I, too, received a letter with five orange pips and I was sure that I would die. Fortunately, a friend of mine told me about the great Sherlock Holmes. This man can solve almost any crime, so now I feel better.

Do not worry my love! I am sure Holmes will save me. Your loving husband-to-be, John

Mr Slinkton used his knowledge of insurance and poison to kill Miss Niner and I am afraid I, too, am going to die because of his poisoning. It all began five years ago when I first met Miss Niner. It was love at first sight when I saw her walking with her sister in a London park. I talked to her for a long time and she began to tell me about her illness. I had studied chemistry at university so I understood that she was being poisoned. When she told me that her uncle knew all about the insurance business too, I was certain that he was killing her. Unfortunately, her uncle took her to Italy for her health he said and she died there. When I heard the news of her death I swore that I would hunt her uncle down! I had a great idea. I pretended to be a young man named Mr Beckwith who drank too much and who wished to take out a life insurance policy. Mr Slinkton immediately helped me to get the policy and he began to prepare my brandy for

Wrong interpretation

Final interpretation Harry Druce stabbed the Colonel with a long swordstick from outside the summerhouse. He did this so that Fiennes and Herbert would walk further along and he would have time to stab the Colonel. It provided a good target for Harry Druce. Harry Druce had used his swordstick, which he then threw in the water.

Page 103 activity 3A Possible answers: 1 Traill could be the murderer because Nox barked at him and then he ran away. 2 The tie-pin could be the murder weapon because the police havent found the actual murder weapon yet, and Traill is a suspect. 3 Janet Druce cant be the murderer because she was on the terrace at the time of the murder. 4 Dr Valentines medical bag could contain the murder weapon because doctors always carry sharp instruments with them. 5 Dr Valentine could be the murderer because he is going to marry Janet and Janet is going to inherit her fathers money now. 6 Herbert Druce cant be the murderer because he was walking with Fiennes at the time of the murder. 7 Harry Druce cant be the murderer because he was walking with

The tie-pin could have been the murder weapon. He returned to the shore at that moment because he sensed that his master had been murdered.

He was simply a nervous man. He returned because he couldnt find the walking stick. It was in his nature to take risks. So he risked killing his uncle for his money, even if he wasnt sure that he would inherit it.

The dog knew that he had been murdered and that is why he began to howl. Nox knew that he was the murderer and Traill ran away because the dog had discovered him.

The dog howled because he couldnt find the walking stick. Nox barked at him because he was a nervous man and dogs dont like nervous people.

Page 114 activity 2 Because witnesses were certain that nobody entered the summerhouse when the Colonel was killed and no murder weapon was found.

Page 114 activity 3 He understood that Harry was a person who liked taking big risks. It was a big risk to murder his uncle since he was not even sure that he would inherit his money.

He could begin to think correctly about Noxs actions because he knew that a dog could not mysteriously sense a murder. He also knew that dogs do not like nervous people and that would have been enough reason for its barking at Traill. Page 114 activities 4-5 Open answers. The Five Orange Pips

1 Choose the correct answer A, B, C or D.

C D A B C D A B C D

They were somehow connected with the KKK. They were all connected with the American Civil War. Because Holmes told him not to. Because he couldnt find them. Because his uncle had already burned them. Because they were too important to give away. The postmarks on all the letters showed that they were sent from ports. The KKK is an American organisation so they must have come to England on a ship. Oranges, and therefore orange pips, always come to England on boats. The KKK is a naval organisation.

1 Before Mr Openshaw even entered the room, Holmes knew that he had a very serious and urgent problem. How? A B C D He had read about him in the newspaper. He could tell by how Mr Openshaw knocked on the door. He had received a letter from him earlier in the day. Only someone with a bad problem would have come out on such a windy and rainy day.

6 Why didnt Mr Openshaw give the KKK their papers?

7 How did Holmes deduce that the murderers travelled by ship?

2 Before Mr Openshaw even told him, Holmes knew that he had just come from Horsham. How? A B C D He could tell from the distinctive dirt on his shoes. He could tell from his distinctive accent. Mr Openshaw was carrying a Horsham newspaper. Mr Openshaw had written to him saying that he was coming from Horsham. Because he had fought for the South during the Civil War and he didnt want blacks to have the vote. Because he was afraid they would kill him if he didnt become a member. Because Captain Calhoun asked him to join. Because he was a strange man and he liked drinking brandy. His uncle left him the house in his will. His uncle gave it to him because he was very fond of him. His uncle left it to his brother, Mr Openshaws father, and then his father left it to him. He, too, was a member of the KKK.

3 Why did Mr Openshaws uncle become a member of the KKK? A B C D A B C D

8 How does Holmes interpret the diary entry: Visited Paramore. All Well.? A B C D A B C D A B C D That Paramore escaped from the KKK. That Paramore was murdered after receiving the five orange pips as a warning. That Paramore decided to join the KKK after receiving the five orange pips as a warning. That Paramore had been sick but now he is better. He read old newspapers. He studied samples of dirt from Horsham. He went to Dundee. He went to the port of London. The KKK. Captain Calhoun. The Confederacy. The weather.

4 How did Mr Openshaw become the owner of his uncles house?

9 How did Holmes find Captain Calhoun?

10 Who or what defeated Holmes in this case?

5 How did the police interpret the deaths of Mr Openshaw, his father and his uncle? A B They were somehow connected with the five orange pips. They were either suicides or accidents.
