The Gospel Lesson

The worship theme this Sunday is informed by the story of Jesus Baptism and how it connects with our own Baptism. Near the end of the service we will look at the Baptismal Covenant. We hope each person will remember your baptism and the privilege and the responsibility that is implied for you. Or if you have not yet been baptized you will be reminded again of what a great gift God gives to you if you want to accept Christ and be baptized. Matthew 3:13-17 The Baptism of Jesus New International Version (NIV) 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? 15 Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness. Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.

Welcome to Worship
elcome to New Hope Church, now into our third century serving God! If you are visiting, you will discover a loving, spirit-filled church family. Here is some helpful information as you join us in worship today: All who worship here are equals in the sight of God, regardless of race, age, gender, physical disability or religious affiliation. Communion, when celebrated, is open to all who profess Christ as Lord and Savior, whether affiliated with this church or not. Children may partake of Communion as well, if parents approve. A nursery is available during the service; please see a greeter for directions. (This is for infants and children up to 3 years of age.) Handicap-accessible restrooms are located off the narthex (main foyer) and adjacent to the entrance lobby in the Fellowship Hall/Gym. Please complete the tear-off attendance slip attached to the bulletin and drop it in the offering plate so we will have a record of your visit with us today. Thank you for remembering to silence your cell phone during the service. We ask that there be no food or beverages in the sanctuary, please. If you arrived as a visitor we hope that you leave as a friend and worship with us often! New Hope Church exists to: Glorify God in worship and rejoice in our life together; Share the Good News of the Gospel in word and deed; Reach as many as we can with the saving love of Jesus; Help each person grow toward Christian maturity, and find their place of service in the church and in the world.

Ministries/Activities Within Our Church

New Year Prayer Services. 15 prayer warriors attended the first Wednesday night meeting! 6:30 - 7:30 is the prayer meeting itself. 5:30 - 6:30 Pastor is present at the meeting place. Last week one person was there when the pastor arrived and people kept coming in during the hour giving time for informal greetings, discussing the church, etc. Any who wish private meeting with the pastor may ask him and go into the church office for whatever their needs are: counseling, prayer, confession, etc. 7:30 to 8:30 Pastor is also available for private meetings on the same basis as during the 5:30 - 6:30 hour. From the Pastors Notes: I believe that meeting of the 15 who came last week was one of the most spiritually satisfying experience I have had since I have been your pastor. We prayed for the church as a whole, realizing we can never reach our goal for this year without Gods help and a fresh pouring out of the spirit of God. Several people present were standing in the need of prayer and received a prayer and laying on hands from another member of the group. We named some people in and outside of the church who needed prayer and we prayed for them by name. I handed out some Intercessory Prayer sheets that you can use as a record sheet for those for whom you are praying. We did a little study on prayer from the

outline in the Lords Prayer. We noted the many time in the book of Acts the early church prayed together. How can we today even think about having a successful church if it does not devote itself to prayer? I feel quite sure that all 15 of us will come back next Wednesday, and that others will want to come also. The Church Session will meet this Tuesday evening, January 14, for the regular monthly meeting. 2014 Offering Envelopes are available on the old communion table in the Narthex. Using the envelopes enables you to designate the budget(s) to which you are giving and also ensures that you will receive proper documentation of your giving for tax purposes. Attendance Goal for 2014. Increase Sunday morning average attendance to reach 100. This goal set by the church leaders is entirely possible, but it will take a strong commitment on the part of every member of our congregation. Please see the Pastors Notes on the church website for suggestions from him on how to work toward this goal. Compassionate Hands. This program that benefits the homeless community of Lebanon continues to do good work here at New Hope. Call Alene or Lee Ann if you would like to help or the church at 444-7020. New Hope invites the men of the church and the surrounding community to a weekly Prayer Breakfast each Tuesday morning at 6:00 a.m. A devotional is shared over breakfast, and a time of prayer follows before the busy workday begins. In a casual atmosphere men may discuss concerns that stay within the group. A bond between friends develops. This is a meaningful time of fellowship for the men who attend. Visitors are always welcome. Come join us! Stephen Ministry - Got a burden? You dont have to carry that burden alone. You can have a STEPHEN MINISTER who will spend time with you, listen to you, and walk beside you. If you or someone you know is interested in receiving care through the Stephen Ministry program at New Hope, please contact the pastor through the Church office at (615) 449-7020 and request that a Stephen minister contact you.
