This is not a rant, there is a lot of information to disperse.

Print out and read it on your train ride to work or while having a cup of coffee but please read it all: The Coney Island lots where cats are routinely dumped by once owners with a total lack of compassion have become !illing "ields. The bulldo#ers have come in and mown down lots full of $ week old kittens and old, debilitated cats. %ne of the pictures you will see on our website: coney&island&cats& 'osephinemarrero.wi(.com shows a mom cat looking for her kittens after a Community )arden was demolished without warning. Two kittens blinded by eyes crusted over with pus and so weak they couldn*t move were removed by a Colony Caretaker and taken to our vet would have been bulldo#ed over if left on that lot. I do not understand how these cats could be viewed as Pets one minute and +isposable )arbage at another less convenient time. ,et*s make one thing clear: These cats did not take over Coney Island - they were mercilessly dumped there and are 'ust struggling to survive. .umans are responsible for this mess and .umans need to step up and do so in a ./0123 manner. There are many other cats left along the 4oardwalk that escaped and now have no shelters. These cats are e(posed to the bitter winds that come off the ocean and they will either free#e to death or die slowly of starvation. 5ome of these cats managed to survive .urricane 5andy - can they take much more6 7ater free#es before they can drink it and their lives. 0any of the residents in the area remember a time when there were rats along the 4oardwalk8 when the cats are gone prepare to welcome the rats back. 7e are not the first group to go in and try to do the 'ob - we hope to +% the 'ob - but we can*t do it alone. "rom what I am seeing on the internet, Coney Island Cats are viewed as funny to some:

Coney Island cat show! - CNN iReport

ireport.cnn.com9docs9+%C&:;<;=>? Cached There are lots of stray cats in Coney Island. In fact, some people call it @Cat Island@ but it is not a 'oke. They live in colonies under and around the boardwalk in different spots and in the community garden where little shelter areas have been set up for them or they mapped out their own digs. 5ome of the cats were born and raised outdoors at Coney in the colonies while others got misplaced from storm 5andy. The good news here is, they get well fed by caring residents and also veterinarian care by dedicated generous vets. They are named, captured if appear to have a stand out illness, taken to one of the vets who provides the service, then returned to the colony. I know some of the cats and saw some new ones this year, kittens as well, meaning under a year. 5urvival is good here, they seem happy and friendly, even la#y. Aou can see them off season in their spots or early 10 before feeding time. I saw a tiger with a tipped ear so they may be doing tipping unless he got into a fight.
