(please stand when indicated by *)

Hymn of the Day #326: Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling The congregation is welcome to come forward during the hymn to remember their baptism by receiving the water on their heads and the words of promise spoken by the pastor, Remember your baptism OUR RESPONSE TO THE WORD * The Apostles Creed
(congregation) C: I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. (led by the pastor)

WE PREPARE FOR WORSHIP Opening Song #512: I Stand Amazed in the Presence Invocation & Prayer of Day (led by pastor) Brief Order for Confession and Forgiveness:
P: If we say we have fellowship with God while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth; but if we walk in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin. (1 John 1:6-7)
(Silence for self-reflection and examination)

P: Have mercy on us, O God, according to your steadfast love. C: According to your abundant mercy, blot out our transgressions. Wash us thoroughly from our iniquity and cleanse us from our sin. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within us. Cast us not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation, and uphold us with a willing spirit. Amen. (from Psalm 51) P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you, and for his sake, God forgives you all your sins. For thus says the Lord: I will sprinkle clean water upon you and you shall be made clean. A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and will give you a heart of flesh. You shall be my people, and I will be your God. (from Ezekiel 36:25-28) C: Amen.
