ShortCircuitAnalysis&ProtectiveDevicesCoordination

COURSEOVERVIEW:
A safe and reliable Power System must be designed with its entire component able to withstand the onerous Short Circuit Current that can occur in their respectivepointofinstallation.Themagnitudeofthe a direct proportion to the product of the square of the current and the fault duration. Hence, electrical protection plays a very important role in the consideration, as it dictates the time persistence of theshortcircuitcurrent. Alternatively, the magnitude of short circuit current that can flow to a part of a system can be limited in variouswaysaswillbediscussedinthismodule. There are, however, advantages and disadvantages of high short circuit capability of a system. It is a disadvantage to a system because comparatively large equipment is required for higher fault current. On the other hand, a strong power supply (high fault current) has the greater advantages of supporting the starting requirement of large motors, and minimizestheeffectofpowersystemharmonics.
Protection of the Power System requires understanding of system faults and their detection, as well as their reliable safe isolation from the system. This course presents comprehensive and systematic

descriptions of the concepts and principles of application and operation of protection schemes applied for various power system elements. Many utilities need this course that studies the relay characteristics during faults and weakprotectionpointsinelectricalpowersystems. In addition, the course enforces the concepts by presenting case studies occurred on the system. The course will be valuable to engineers and technicians just entering the system protection field and those seeking a better understanding of the new stateoftheart of protectiverelaying.
